    An Optimized Multi-Layer Resource Management in Mobile Edge Computing Networks: A Joint Computation Offloading and Caching Solution

    Nowadays, data caching is being used as a high-speed data storage layer in mobile edge computing networks employing flow control methodologies at an exponential rate. This study shows how to discover the best architecture for backhaul networks with caching capability using a distributed offloading technique. This article used a continuous power flow analysis to achieve the optimum load constraints, wherein the power of macro base stations with various caching capacities is supplied by either an intelligent grid network or renewable energy systems. This work proposes ubiquitous connectivity between users at the cell edge and offloading the macro cells so as to provide features the macro cell itself cannot cope with, such as extreme changes in the required user data rate and energy efficiency. The offloading framework is then reformed into a neural weighted framework that considers convergence and Lyapunov instability requirements of mobile-edge computing under Karush Kuhn Tucker optimization restrictions in order to get accurate solutions. The cell-layer performance is analyzed in the boundary and in the center point of the cells. The analytical and simulation results show that the suggested method outperforms other energy-saving techniques. Also, compared to other solutions studied in the literature, the proposed approach shows a two to three times increase in both the throughput of the cell edge users and the aggregate throughput per cluster

    Energy and throughput efficient strategies for heterogeneous future communication networks

    As a result of the proliferation of wireless-enabled user equipment and data-hungry applications, mobile data traffic has exponentially increased in recent years.This in-crease has not only forced mobile networks to compete on the scarce wireless spectrum but also to intensify their power consumption to serve an ever-increasing number of user devices. The Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) concept, where mixed types of low-power base stations coexist with large macro base stations, has emerged as a potential solution to address power consumption and spectrum scarcity challenges. However, as a consequence of their inflexible, constrained, and hardware-based configurations, HetNets have major limitations in adapting to fluctuating traffic patterns. Moreover, for large mobile networks, the number of low-power base stations (BSs) may increase dramatically leading to sever power consumption. This can easily overwhelm the benefits of the HetNet concept. This thesis exploits the adaptive nature of Software-defined Radio (SDR) technology to design novel and optimal communication strategies. These strategies have been designed to leverage the spectrum-based cell zooming technique, the long-term evolution licensed assisted access (LTE-LAA) concept, and green energy, in order to introduce a novel communication framework that endeavors to minimize overall network on-grid power consumption and to maximize aggregated throughput, which brings significant benefits for both network operators and their customers. The proposed strategies take into consideration user data demands, BS loads, BS power consumption, and available spectrum to model the research questions as optimization problems. In addition, this thesis leverages the opportunistic nature of the cognitive radio (CR) technique and the adaptive nature of the SDR to introduce a CR-based communication strategy. This proposed CR-based strategy alleviates the power consumption of the CR technique and enhances its security measures according to the confidentiality level of the data being sent. Furthermore, the introduced strategy takes into account user-related factors, such as user battery levels and user data types, and network-related factors, such as the number of unutilized bands and vulnerability level, and then models the research question as a constrained optimization problem. Considering the time complexity of the optimum solutions for the above-mentioned strategies, heuristic solutions were proposed and examined against existing solutions. The obtained results show that the proposed strategies can save energy consumption up to 18%, increase user throughput up to 23%, and achieve better spectrum utilization. Therefore, the proposed strategies offer substantial benefits for both network operators and users

    Caching UAV-enabled small-cell networks

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be utilized to provide flexible wireless access in future wireless networks, with larger coverage and higher transmission rate. However, the wireless backhaul for UAVs is usually capacity-limited and congested, and UAVs cannot operate for a long time due to the limited battery life. In this paper, a framework of caching UAV-enabled small-cell networks is proposed, to offload data traffic for the small-cell base stations via caching. In the proposed scheme, the most popular contents are stored at the local caches of UAVs in advance, which can be delivered to mobile users directly from the caches when required. Thus, the congestion of wireless backhaul can be alleviated, the energy consumption can be reduced, and the quality of experience can be improved

    Energy-aware caching and collaboration for green communication systems.

    Social networks and mobile applications tend to enhance the need for high-quality content access. To meet the growing demand for data services in 5G cellular networks, it is important to develop effective content caching and distribution techniques, to reduce redundant data transmission and thereby improve network efficiency significantly. It is anticipated that energy harvesting and self-powered Small Base Stations' (SBS) are the rudimentary constituents of next-generation cellular networks. However, uncertainties in harvested energy are the primary reasons to opt for energy-efficient (EE) power control schemes to reduce SBS energy consumption and ensure the quality of services for users. Using edge collaborative caching, such EE design can also be achievable via the use of the content cache, decreasing the usage of capacity limited SBSs backhaul and reducing energy utilisation. Renewable energy (RE) harvesting technologies can be leveraged to manage the huge power demands of cellular networks. To reduce carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency, we tailored a more practical approach and propose green caching mechanisms for content distribution that utilise the content caching and renewable energy concept. Simulation results and analysis provide key insights that the proposed caching scheme brings a substantial improvement regarding content availability, cache storage capacity at the edge of cellular networks, enhances energy efficiency, and increases cache collaboration time up to 24%. Furthermore, self-powered base stations and energy harvesting are an ultimate part of next-generation wireless networks, particularly in terms of optimum economic sustainability and green energy in developing countries for the evolution of mobile networks

    Caching D2D connections in small-cell networks

    Small-cell network is a promising solution to high video traffic. However, with the increasing number of devices, it cannot meet the requirements from all users. Thus, we propose a caching device-to-device (D2D) scheme for small-cell networks, in which caching placement and D2D establishment are combined. In this scheme, a limited cache is equipped at each user, and the popular files can be prefetched at the local cache during off-peak period. Thus, dense D2D connections can be established during peak time aided by these cached users, which will reduce the backhaul pressure significantly. To do this, first, an optimal caching scheme is formulated according to the popularity to maximize the total offloading probability of the D2D system. Thus, most edge users can obtain their required video files from the caches at users nearby, instead from the small-cell base station. Then, the sum rate of D2D links is analyzed in different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. Furthermore, to maximize the throughput of D2D links with low complexity, three D2Dlink scheduling schemes are proposed with the help of bipartite graph theory and Kuhn-Munkres algorithm for low, high and medium SNRs, respectively. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme

    Proactive content caching in future generation communication networks: Energy and security considerations

    The proliferation of hand-held devices and Internet of Things (IoT) applications has heightened demand for popular content download. A high volume of content streaming/downloading services during peak hours can cause network congestion. Proactive content caching has emerged as a prospective solution to tackle this congestion problem. In proactive content caching, data storage units are used to store popular content in helper nodes at the network edge. This contributes to a reduction of peak traffic load and network congestion. However, data storage units require additional energy, which offers a challenge to researchers that intend to reduce energy consumption up to 90% in next generation networks. This thesis presents proactive content caching techniques to reduce grid energy consumption by utilizing renewable energy sources to power-up data storage units in helper nodes. The integration of renewable energy sources with proactive caching is a significant challenge due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources and investment costs. In this thesis, this challenge is tackled by introducing strategies to determine the optimal time of the day for content caching and optimal scheduling of caching nodes. The proposed strategies consider not only the availability of renewable energy but also temporal changes in network trac to reduce associated energy costs. While proactive caching can facilitate the reduction of peak trac load and the integration of renewable energy, cached content objects at helper nodes are often more vulnerable to malicious attacks due to less stringent security at edge nodes. Potential content leakage can lead to catastrophic consequences, particularly for cache-equipped Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. In this thesis, the concept of \trusted caching nodes (TCNs) is introduced. TCNs cache popular content objects and provide security services to connected links. The proposed study optimally allocates TCNs and selects the most suitable content forwarding paths. Furthermore, a caching strategy is designed for mobile edge computing systems to support IoT task offloading. The strategy optimally assigns security resources to offloaded tasks while satisfying their individual requirements. However, security measures often contribute to overheads in terms of both energy consumption and delay. Consequently, in this thesis, caching techniques have been designed to investigate the trade-off between energy consumption and probable security breaches. Overall, this thesis contributes to the current literature by simultaneously investigating energy and security aspects of caching systems whilst introducing solutions to relevant research problems

    Content Caching and Delivery in Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), which enable information exchange and content delivery in real time, are expected to revolutionize current transportation systems for better driving safety, traffic efficiency, and environmental sustainability. However, the emerging CAV applications such as content delivery pose stringent requirements on latency, throughput, reliability, and global connectivity. The current wireless networks face significant challenges to satisfy the requirements due to scarce radio spectrum resources, inflexibility to dynamic traffic demands, and geographic-constrained fixed infrastructure deployment. To empower multifarious CAV content delivery, heterogeneous vehicular networks (HetVNets), which integrate the terrestrial networks with aerial networks formed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and space networks constituting of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, can guarantee reliable, flexible, cost-effective, and globally seamless service provisioning. In addition, edge caching is a promising solution to facilitate content delivery by caching popular files in the HetVNet access points (APs) to relieve the backhaul traffic with a lower delivery delay. The main technical issues are: 1) to fully reveal the potential of HetVNets for content delivery performance enhancement, content caching scheme design in HetVNets should jointly consider network characteristics, vehicle mobility patterns, content popularity, and APs’ caching capacities; 2) to fully exploit the controllable mobility and agility of UAVs to support dynamic vehicular content demands, the caching scheme and trajectory design for UAVs should be jointly optimized, which has not been well addressed due to their intricate inter-coupling relationships; and 3) for caching-based content delivery in HetVNets, a cooperative content delivery scheme should be designed to enable the cooperation among different network segments with ingenious utilization of heterogeneous network resources. In this thesis, we design the content caching and delivery schemes in the caching-enabled HetVNet to address the three technical issues. First, we study the content caching in HetVNets with fixed terrestrial APs including cellular base stations (CBSs), Wi-Fi roadside units (RSUs), and TV white space (TVWS) stations. To characterize the intermittent network connection caused by limited network coverage and high vehicle mobility, we establish an on-off model with service interruptions to describe the vehicular content delivery process. Content coding then is leveraged to resist the impact of unstable network connections and enhance caching efficiency. By jointly considering file characteristics and network conditions, the content placement is formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. Adopting the idea of the student admission model, the ILP problem is then transformed into a many-to-one matching problem between content files and HetVNet APs and solved by our proposed stable-matching-based caching scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performances in terms of delivery delay and offloading ratio with a low complexity. Second, UAV-aided caching is considered to assist vehicular content delivery in aerial-ground vehicular networks (AGVN) and a joint caching and trajectory optimization (JCTO) problem is investigated to jointly optimize content caching, content delivery, and UAV trajectory. To enable real-time decision-making in highly dynamic vehicular networks, we propose a deep supervised learning scheme to solve the JCTO problem. Specifically, we first devise a clustering-based two-layered (CBTL) algorithm to solve the JCTO problem offline. With a given content caching policy, we design a time-based graph decomposition method to jointly optimize content delivery and UAV trajectory, with which we then leverage the particle swarm optimization algorithm to optimize the content caching. We then design a deep supervised learning architecture of the convolutional neural network (CNN) to make online decisions. With the CNN-based model, a function mapping the input network information to output decisions can be intelligently learnt to make timely inferences. Extensive trace-driven experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of CBTL in solving the JCTO problem and the superior learning performance with the CNN-based model. Third, we investigate caching-assisted cooperative content delivery in space-air-ground integrated vehicular networks (SAGVNs), where vehicular content requests can be cooperatively served by multiple APs in space, aerial, and terrestrial networks. In specific, a joint optimization problem of vehicle-to-AP association, bandwidth allocation, and content delivery ratio, referred to as the ABC problem, is formulated to minimize the overall content delivery delay while satisfying vehicular quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. To address the tightly-coupled optimization variables, we propose a load- and mobility-aware ABC (LMA-ABC) scheme to solve the joint optimization problem as follows. We first decompose the ABC problem to optimize the content delivery ratio. Then the impact of bandwidth allocation on the achievable delay performance is analyzed, and an effect of diminishing delay performance gain is revealed. Based on the analysis results, the LMA-ABC scheme is designed with the consideration of user fairness, load balancing, and vehicle mobility. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LMA-ABC scheme can significantly reduce the cooperative content delivery delay compared to the benchmark schemes. In summary, we have investigated the content caching in terrestrial networks with fixed APs, joint caching and trajectory optimization in the AGVN, and caching-assisted cooperative content delivery in the SAGVN. The proposed schemes and theoretical results should provide useful guidelines for future research in the caching scheme design and efficient utilization of network resources in caching-enabled heterogeneous wireless networks
