    A Novel General Imaging Formation Algorithm for GNSS-Based Bistatic SAR.

    Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) recently plays a more and more significant role in remote sensing applications for its low-cost and real-time global coverage capability. In this paper, a general imaging formation algorithm was proposed for accurately and efficiently focusing GNSS-based bistatic SAR data, which avoids the interpolation processing in traditional back projection algorithms (BPAs). A two-dimensional point target spectrum model was firstly presented, and the bulk range cell migration correction (RCMC) was consequently derived for reducing range cell migration (RCM) and coarse focusing. As the bulk RCMC seriously changes the range history of the radar signal, a modified and much more efficient hybrid correlation operation was introduced for compensating residual phase errors. Simulation results were presented based on a general geometric topology with non-parallel trajectories and unequal velocities for both transmitter and receiver platforms, showing a satisfactory performance by the proposed method

    Local Motion Planner for Autonomous Navigation in Vineyards with a RGB-D Camera-Based Algorithm and Deep Learning Synergy

    With the advent of agriculture 3.0 and 4.0, researchers are increasingly focusing on the development of innovative smart farming and precision agriculture technologies by introducing automation and robotics into the agricultural processes. Autonomous agricultural field machines have been gaining significant attention from farmers and industries to reduce costs, human workload, and required resources. Nevertheless, achieving sufficient autonomous navigation capabilities requires the simultaneous cooperation of different processes; localization, mapping, and path planning are just some of the steps that aim at providing to the machine the right set of skills to operate in semi-structured and unstructured environments. In this context, this study presents a low-cost local motion planner for autonomous navigation in vineyards based only on an RGB-D camera, low range hardware, and a dual layer control algorithm. The first algorithm exploits the disparity map and its depth representation to generate a proportional control for the robotic platform. Concurrently, a second back-up algorithm, based on representations learning and resilient to illumination variations, can take control of the machine in case of a momentaneous failure of the first block. Moreover, due to the double nature of the system, after initial training of the deep learning model with an initial dataset, the strict synergy between the two algorithms opens the possibility of exploiting new automatically labeled data, coming from the field, to extend the existing model knowledge. The machine learning algorithm has been trained and tested, using transfer learning, with acquired images during different field surveys in the North region of Italy and then optimized for on-device inference with model pruning and quantization. Finally, the overall system has been validated with a customized robot platform in the relevant environment

    Autofocus and analysis of geometrical errors within the framework of fast factorized back-projection

    This paper describes a Fast Factorized Back-Projection (FFBP) formulation that includes a fully integrated autofocus algorithm, i.e. the Factorized Geometrical Autofocus (FGA) algorithm. The base-two factorization is executed in a horizontal plane, using a Merging (M) and a Range History Preserving (RHP) transform. Six parameters are adopted for each sub-aperture pair, i.e. to establish the geometry stage-by-stage via triangles in 3-dimensional space. If the parameters are derived from navigation data, the algorithm is used as a conventional processing chain. If the parameters on the other hand are varied from a certain factorization step and forward, the algorithm is used as a joint image formation and autofocus strategy. By regulating the geometry at multiple resolution levels, challenging defocusing effects, e.g. residual space-variant Range Cell Migration (RCM), can be corrected. The new formulation also serves another important purpose, i.e. as a parameter characterization scheme. By using the FGA algorithm and its inverse, relations between two arbitrary geometries can be studied, in consequence, this makes it feasible to analyze how errors in navigation data, and topography, affect image focus. The versatility of the factorization procedure is demonstrated successfully on simulated Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. This is achieved by introducing different GPS/IMU errors and Focus Target Plane (FTP) deviations prior to processing. The characterization scheme is then employed to evaluate the sensitivity, to determine at what step the autofocus function should be activated, and to decide the number of necessary parameters at each step. Resulting FGA images are also compared to a reference image (processed without errors and autofocus) and to a defocused image (processed without autofocus), i.e. to validate the novel approach further

    A Study in GPS-Denied Navigation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

    In modern navigation systems, GPS is vital to accurately piloting a vehicle. This is especially true in autonomous vehicles, such as UAVs, which have no pilot. Unfortunately, GPS signals can be easily jammed or spoofed. For example, canyons and urban cities create an environment where the sky is obstructed and make GPS signals unreliable. Additionally, hostile individuals can transmit personal signals intended to block or spoof GPS signals. In these situations, it is important to find a means of navigation that doesn’t rely on GPS. Navigating without GPS means that other types of sensors or instruments must be used to replace the information lost from GPS. Some examples of additional sensors include cameras, altimeters, magnetometers, and radar. The work presented in this thesis shows how radar can be used to navigate without GPS. Specifically, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is used, which is a method of processing radar data to form images of a landscape similar to images captured using a camera. SAR presents its own unique set of benefits and challenges. One major benefit of SAR is that it can produce images of an area even at night or through cloud cover. Additionally, SAR can image a wide swath of land at an angle that would be difficult for a camera to achieve. However, SAR is more computationally complex than other imaging sensors. Image quality is also highly dependent on the quality of navigation information available. In general, SAR requires that good navigation data be had in order to form SAR images. The research here explores the reverse problem where SAR images are formed without good navigation data and then good navigation data is inferred from the images. This thesis performs feasibility studies and real data implementations that show how SAR can be used in navigation without the presence of GPS. Derivations and background materials are provided. Validation methods and additional discussions are provided on the results of each portion of research

    SAR sensing of the atmosphere: stack-based processing for tropospheric and ionospheric phase retrieval

    This paper is intended to summarize the research conducted during the first 2 years of the Dragon 5 project 59,332 (geophysical and atmospheric retrieval from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data stacks over natural scenarios). Monitoring atmospheric phenomena, encompassing both tropospheric and ionospheric conditions, holds pivotal significance for various scientific and practical applications. In this paper, we present an exploration of advanced techniques for estimating tropospheric and ionospheric phase screens using stacks of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Our study delves into the current state-of-the-art in atmospheric monitoring with a focus on spaceborne SAR systems, shedding light on their evolving capabilities. For tropospheric phase screen estimation, we propose a novel approach that jointly estimates the tropospheric component from all the images. We discuss the methodology in detail, highlighting its ability to recover accurate tropospheric maps. Through a series of quantitative case studies using real Sentinel-1 satellite data, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique in capturing tropospheric variability over different geographical regions. Concurrently, we delve into the estimation of ionospheric phase screens utilizing SAR image stacks. The intricacies of ionospheric disturbances pose unique challenges, necessitating specialized techniques. We dissect our approach, showcasing its capacity to mitigate ionospheric noise and recover precise phase information. Real data from the Sentinel-1 satellite are employed to showcase the efficacy of our method, unraveling ionospheric perturbations with improved accuracy. The integration of our techniques, though presented separately for clarity, collectively contributes to a comprehensive framework for atmospheric monitoring. Our findings emphasize the potential of SAR-based approaches in advancing our knowledge of atmospheric processes, thus fostering advancements in weather prediction, geophysics, and environmental management
