    Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program

    The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL's) Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), responds to opportunities presented by NASA space missions and systems, and seeds commerical applications of the emerging robotics technology. The scope of the JPL Rover and Telerobotics Technology Program comprises three major segments of activity: NASA robotic systems for planetary exploration, robotic technology and terrestrial spin-offs, and technology for non-NASA sponsors. Significant technical achievements have been reached in each of these areas, including complete telerobotic system prototypes that have built and tested in realistic scenarios relevant to prospective users. In addition, the program has conducted complementary basic research and created innovative technology and terrestrial applications, as well as enabled a variety of commercial spin-offs

    Axel Rover Tethered Dynamics and Motion Planning on Extreme Planetary Terrain

    Some of the most appealing science targets for future exploration missions in our solar system lie in terrains that are inaccessible to state-of-the-art robotic rovers such as NASA's Opportunity, thereby precluding in situ analysis of these rich opportunities. Examples of potential high-yield science areas on Mars include young gullies on sloped terrains, exposed layers of bedrock in the Victoria Crater, sources of methane gas near Martian volcanic ranges, and stepped delta formations in heavily cratered regions. In addition, a recently discovered cryovolcano on Titan and frozen water near the south pole of our own Moon could provide a wealth of knowledge to any robotic explorer capable of accessing these regions. To address the challenge of extreme terrain exploration, this dissertation presents the Axel rover, a two-wheeled tethered robot capable of rappelling down steep slopes and traversing rocky terrain. Axel is part of a family of reconfigurable rovers, which, when docked, form a four-wheeled vehicle nicknamed DuAxel. DuAxel provides untethered mobility to regions of extreme terrain and serves as an anchor support for a single Axel when it undocks and rappels into low-ground. Axel's performance on extreme terrain is primarily governed by three key system components: wheel design, tether control, and intelligent planning around obstacles. Investigations in wheel design and optimizing for extreme terrain resulted in the development of grouser wheels. Experiments demonstrated that these grouser wheels were very effective at surmounting obstacles, climbing rocks up to 90% of the wheel diameter. Terramechanics models supported by experiments showed that these wheels would not sink excessively or become trapped in deformable terrain. Predicting tether forces in different configurations is also essential to the rover's mobility. Providing power, communication, and mobility forces, the tether is Axel's lifeline while it rappels steep slopes, and a cut, abraded, or ruptured tether would result in an untimely end to the rover's mission. Understanding tether forces are therefore paramount, and this thesis both models and measures tension forces to predict and avoid high-stress scenarios. Finally, incorporating autonomy into Axel is a unique challenge due to the complications that arise during tether management. Without intelligent planning, rappelling systems can easily become entangled around obstacles and suffer catastrophic failures. This motivates the development of a novel tethered planning algorithm, presented in this thesis, which is unique for rappelling systems. Recent field experiments in natural extreme terrains on Earth demonstrate the Axel rover's potential as a candidate for future space operations. Both DuAxel and its rappelling counterpart are rigorously tested on a 20 meter escarpment and in the Arizona desert. Through analysis and experiments, this thesis provides the framework for a new generation of robotic explorers capable of accessing extreme planetary regions and potentially providing clues for life beyond Earth.</p

    Visual Prediction of Rover Slip: Learning Algorithms and Field Experiments

    Perception of the surrounding environment is an essential tool for intelligent navigation in any autonomous vehicle. In the context of Mars exploration, there is a strong motivation to enhance the perception of the rovers beyond geometry-based obstacle avoidance, so as to be able to predict potential interactions with the terrain. In this thesis we propose to remotely predict the amount of slip, which reflects the mobility of the vehicle on future terrain. The method is based on learning from experience and uses visual information from stereo imagery as input. We test the algorithm on several robot platforms and in different terrains. We also demonstrate its usefulness in an integrated system, onboard a Mars prototype rover in the JPL Mars Yard. Another desirable capability for an autonomous robot is to be able to learn about its interactions with the environment in a fully automatic fashion. We propose an algorithm which uses the robot's sensors as supervision for vision-based learning of different terrain types. This algorithm can work with noisy and ambiguous signals provided from onboard sensors. To be able to cope with rich, high-dimensional visual representations we propose a novel, nonlinear dimensionality reduction technique which exploits automatic supervision. The method is the first to consider supervised nonlinear dimensionality reduction in a probabilistic framework using supervision which can be noisy or ambiguous. Finally, we consider the problem of learning to recognize different terrains, which addresses the time constraints of an onboard autonomous system. We propose a method which automatically learns a variable-length feature representation depending on the complexity of the classification task. The proposed approach achieves a good trade-off between decrease in computational time and recognition performance.</p

    Effects of automation on situation awareness in controlling robot teams

    Declines in situation awareness (SA) often accompany automation. Some of these effects have been characterized as out-of-the-loop, complacency, and automation bias. Increasing autonomy in multi-robot control might be expected to produce similar declines in operators’ SA. In this paper we review a series of experiments in which automation is introduced in controlling robot teams. Automating path planning at a foraging task improved both target detection and localization which is closely tied to SA. Timing data, however, suggested small declines in SA for robot location and pose. Automation of image acquisition, by contrast, led to poorer localization. Findings are discussed and alternative explanations involving shifts in strategy proposed

    Module-based structure design of wheeled mobile robot

    This paper proposes an innovative and systematic approach for synthesizing mechanical structures of wheeled mobile robots. The principle and terminologies used for the proposed synthesis method are presented by adopting the concept of modular design, isomorphic and non-isomorphic, and set theory with its associated combinatorial mathematics. The modular-based innovative synthesis and design of wheeled robots were conducted at two levels. Firstly at the module level, by creative design and analysing the structures of classic wheeled robots, a wheel module set containing four types of wheel mechanisms, a suspension module set consisting of five types of suspension frames and a chassis module set composed of five types of rigid or articulated chassis were designed and generalized. Secondly at the synthesis level, two kinds of structure synthesis modes, namely the isomorphic-combination mode and the non-isomorphic combination mode were proposed to synthesize mechanical structures of wheeled robots; which led to 241 structures for wheeled mobile robots including 236 novel ones. Further, mathematical models and a software platform were developed to provide appropriate and intuitive tools for simulating and evaluating performance of the wheeled robots that were proposed in this paper. Eventually, physical prototypes of sample wheeled robots/rovers were developed and tested so as to prove and validate the principle and methodology presented in this paper

    Mars delivery service - development of the electro-mechanical systems of the Sample Fetch Rover for the Mars Sample Return Campaign

    This thesis describes the development of the Sample Fetch Rover (SFR), studied for Mars Sample Return (MSR), an international campaign carried out in cooperation between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The focus of this document is the design of the electro-mechanical systems of the rover. After placing this work into the general context of robotic planetary exploration and summarising the state of the art for what concerns Mars rovers, the architecture of the Mars Sample Return Campaign is presented. A complete overview of the current SFR architecture is provided, touching upon all the main subsystems of the spacecraft. For each area, it is discussed what are the design drivers, the chosen solutions and whether they use heritage technology (in particular from the ExoMars Rover) or new developments. This research focuses on two topics of particular interest, due to their relevance for the mission and the novelty of their design: locomotion and sample acquisition, which are discussed in depth. The early SFR locomotion concepts are summarised, covering the initial trade-offs and discarded designs for higher traverse performance. Once a consolidated architecture was reached, the locomotion subsystem was developed further, defining the details of the suspension, actuators, deployment mechanisms and wheels. This technology is presented here in detail, including some key analysis and test results that support the design and demonstrate how it responds to the mission requirements. Another major electro-mechanical system developed as part of this work is the one dedicated to sample tube acquisition. The concept of operations of this machinery was defined to be robust against the unknown conditions that characterise the mission.     Field Testing of Utility Robots for Lunar Surface Operations

    Since 2004, NASA has been working to return to the Moon. In contrast to the Apollo missions, two key objectives of the current exploration program is to establish significant infrastructure and an outpost. Achieving these objectives will enable long-duration stays and long-distance exploration of the Moon. To do this, robotic systems will be needed to perform tasks which cannot, or should not, be performed by crew alone. In this paper, we summarize our work to develop "utility robots" for lunar surface operations, present results and lessons learned from field testing, and discuss directions for future research
