Machine Learning in Wireless Sensor Networks: Algorithms, Strategies, and Applications
Wireless sensor networks monitor dynamic environments that change rapidly
over time. This dynamic behavior is either caused by external factors or
initiated by the system designers themselves. To adapt to such conditions,
sensor networks often adopt machine learning techniques to eliminate the need
for unnecessary redesign. Machine learning also inspires many practical
solutions that maximize resource utilization and prolong the lifespan of the
network. In this paper, we present an extensive literature review over the
period 2002-2013 of machine learning methods that were used to address common
issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The advantages and disadvantages of
each proposed algorithm are evaluated against the corresponding problem. We
also provide a comparative guide to aid WSN designers in developing suitable

Sparse Localization with a Mobile Beacon Based on LU Decomposition in Wireless Sensor Networks
Node localization is the core in wireless sensor network. It can be solved by powerful beacons, which are equipped with global positioning system devices to know their location information. In this article, we present a novel sparse localization approach with a mobile beacon based on LU decomposition. Our scheme firstly translates node localization problem into a 1-sparse vector recovery problem by establishing sparse localization model. Then, LU decomposition pre-processing is adopted to solve the problem that measurement matrix does not meet the re¬stricted isometry property. Later, the 1-sparse vector can be exactly recovered by compressive sensing. Finally, as the 1-sparse vector is approximate sparse, weighted Cen¬troid scheme is introduced to accurately locate the node. Simulation and analysis show that our scheme has better localization performance and lower requirement for the mobile beacon than MAP+GC, MAP-M, and MAP-M&N schemes. In addition, the obstacles and DOI have little effect on the novel scheme, and it has great localization performance under low SNR, thus, the scheme proposed is robust
Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Pushing towards the Limit of Sampling Rate: Adaptive Chasing Sampling
Measurement samples are often taken in various monitoring applications. To
reduce the sensing cost, it is desirable to achieve better sensing quality
while using fewer samples. Compressive Sensing (CS) technique finds its role
when the signal to be sampled meets certain sparsity requirements. In this
paper we investigate the possibility and basic techniques that could further
reduce the number of samples involved in conventional CS theory by exploiting
learning-based non-uniform adaptive sampling.
Based on a typical signal sensing application, we illustrate and evaluate the
performance of two of our algorithms, Individual Chasing and Centroid Chasing,
for signals of different distribution features. Our proposed learning-based
adaptive sampling schemes complement existing efforts in CS fields and do not
depend on any specific signal reconstruction technique. Compared to
conventional sparse sampling methods, the simulation results demonstrate that
our algorithms allow less number of samples for accurate signal
reconstruction and achieve up to smaller signal reconstruction error

Device-free Localization using Received Signal Strength Measurements in Radio Frequency Network
Device-free localization (DFL) based on the received signal strength (RSS)
measurements of radio frequency (RF)links is the method using RSS variation due
to the presence of the target to localize the target without attaching any
device. The majority of DFL methods utilize the fact the link will experience
great attenuation when obstructed. Thus that localization accuracy depends on
the model which describes the relationship between RSS loss caused by
obstruction and the position of the target. The existing models is too rough to
explain some phenomenon observed in the experiment measurements. In this paper,
we propose a new model based on diffraction theory in which the target is
modeled as a cylinder instead of a point mass. The proposed model can will
greatly fits the experiment measurements and well explain the cases like link
crossing and walking along the link line. Because the measurement model is
nonlinear, particle filtering tracing is used to recursively give the
approximate Bayesian estimation of the position. The posterior Cramer-Rao lower
bound (PCRLB) of proposed tracking method is also derived. The results of field
experiments with 8 radio sensors and a monitored area of 3.5m 3.5m show that
the tracking error of proposed model is improved by at least 36 percent in the
single target case and 25 percent in the two targets case compared to other

Device Free Localisation Techniques in Indoor Environments
The location estimation of a target for a long period was performed only by device based localisation technique which is difficult in applications where target especially human is non-cooperative. A target was detected by equipping a device using global positioning systems, radio frequency systems, ultrasonic frequency systems, etc. Device free localisation (DFL) is an upcoming technology in automated localisation in which target need not equip any device for identifying its position by the user. For achieving this objective, the wireless sensor network is a better choice due to its growing popularity. This paper describes the possible categorisation of recently developed DFL techniques using wireless sensor network. The scope of each category of techniques is analysed by comparing their potential benefits and drawbacks. Finally, future scope and research directions in this field are also summarised
Matrix Design for Optimal Sensing
We design optimal () matrices, with unit columns, so that
the maximum condition number of all the submatrices comprising 3 columns is
minimized. The problem has two applications. When estimating a 2-dimensional
signal by using only three of observations at a given time, this minimizes
the worst-case achievable estimation error. It also captures the problem of
optimum sensor placement for monitoring a source located in a plane, when only
a minimum number of required sensors are active at any given time. For
arbitrary , we derive the optimal matrices which minimize the maximum
condition number of all the submatrices of three columns. Surprisingly, a
