The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods, part 1

    Get PDF
The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods was held on 4-9 Apr. 1993, at Copper Mountain, CO. This book is a collection of many of the papers presented at the conference and as such represents the conference proceedings. NASA LaRC graciously provided printing of this document so that all of the papers could be presented in a single forum. Each paper was reviewed by a member of the conference organizing committee under the coordination of the editors. The multigrid discipline continues to expand and mature, as is evident from these proceedings. The vibrancy in this field is amply expressed in these important papers, and the collection clearly shows its rapid trend to further diversity and depth

Convergence and Optimality of Adaptive Mixed Finite Element Methods

The convergence and optimality of adaptive mixed finite element methods for the Poisson equation are established in this paper. The main difficulty for mixed finite element methods is the lack of minimization principle and thus the failure of orthogonality. A quasi-orthogonality property is proved using the fact that the error is orthogonal to the divergence free subspace, while the part of the error that is not divergence free can be bounded by the data oscillation using a discrete stability result. This discrete stability result is also used to get a localized discrete upper bound which is crucial for the proof of the optimality of the adaptive approximation

Multigrid methods for saddle point problems: Darcy systems

    Get PDF
We design and analyze multigrid methods for the saddle point problems resulting from Raviart–Thomas–Nédélec mixed finite element methods for the Darcy system in porous media flow. Uniform convergence of the W-cycle algorithm in a nonstandard energy norm is established. Extensions to general second order elliptic problems are also addressed
