    Atmospheric water parameters in mid-latitude cyclones observed by microwave radiometry and compared to model calculations

    Existing and experimental algorithms for various parameters of atmospheric water content such as integrated water vapor, cloud water, precipitation, are used to examine the distribution of these quantities in mid latitude cyclones. The data was obtained from signals given by the special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I) and compared with data from the nimbus scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) for North Atlantic cyclones. The potential of microwave remote sensing for enhancing knowledge of the horizontal structure of these storms and to aid the development and testing of the cloud and precipitation aspects of limited area numerical models of cyclonic storms is investigated

    The knowledge domain of affective computing: a scientometric review

    Purpose – The aim of this study is to investigate the bibliographical information about Affective Computing identifying advances, trends, major papers, connections, and areas of research. Design/methodology/approach – A scientometric analysis was applied using CiteSpace, of 5,078 references about Affective Computing imported from the Web-of-Science Core Collection, covering the period of 1991-2016. Findings – The most cited, creative, burts and central references are displayed by areas of research, using metrics and througout-time visualization. Research limitations/implications – Interpretation is limited to references retrieved from theWeb-of-Science Core Collection in the fields of management, psychology and marketing. Nevertheless, the richness of bibliographical data obtained, largely compensates this limitation. Practical implications – The study provides managers with a sound body of knowledge on Affective Computing, with which they can capture general public emotion in respect of their products and services, and on which they can base their marketing intelligence gathering, and strategic planning.     A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks

    In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs

    Broadband stimulated Raman scattering with Fourier-transform detection

    We propose a new approach to broadband Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) spectroscopy and microscopy based on time-domain Fourier transform (FT) detection of the stimulated Raman gain (SRG) spectrum. We generate two phase-locked replicas of the Stokes pulse after the sample using a passive birefringent interferometer and measure by the FT technique both the Stokes and the SRG spectra. Our approach blends the very high sensitivity of single-channel lock-in balanced detection with the spectral coverage and resolution afforded by FT spectroscopy. We demonstrate our method by measuring the SRG spectra of different compounds and performing broadband SRS imaging on inorganic blends
