Scaling Laws for Vehicular Networks
Equipping automobiles with wireless communications and networking capabilities is becoming the frontier in the evolution to the next generation intelligent transportation systems (ITS). By means of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, information generated by the vehicle-borne computer, vehicle control system, on-board sensors, or roadside infrastructure, can be effectively disseminated among vehicles/infrastructure in proximity or to vehicles/infrastructure multiple hops away, known as vehicular networks (VANETs), to enhance the situational awareness of vehicles and provide motorist/passengers with an information-rich travel environment. Scaling law for throughput capacity and delay in wireless networks has been considered as one of the most fundamental issues, which characterizes the trend of throughput/delay behavior when the network size increases. The study of scaling laws can lead to a better understanding of intrinsic properties of wireless networks and theoretical guidance on network design and deployment. Moreover, the results could also be applied to predict network performance, especially for the large-scale vehicular networks. However, map-restricted mobility and spatio-temporal dynamics of vehicle density dramatically complicate scaling laws studies for VANETs. As an effort to lay a scientific foundation of vehicular networking, my thesis investigates capacity scaling laws for vehicular networks with and without infrastructure, respectively.
Firstly, the thesis studies scaling law of throughput capacity and end-to-end delay for a social-proximity vehicular network, where each vehicle has a restricted mobility region around a specific social spot and services are delivered in a store-carry-and-forward paradigm. It has been shown that although the throughput and delay may degrade in a high vehicle density area, it is still possible to achieve almost constant scaling for per vehicle throughput and end-to-end delay.
Secondly, in addition to pure ad hoc vehicular networks, the thesis derives the capacity scaling laws for networks with wireless infrastructure, where services are delivered uniformly from infrastructure to all vehicles in the network. The V2V communication is also required to relay the downlink traffic to the vehicles outside the coverage of infrastructure. Three kinds of infrastructures have been considered, i.e., cellular base stations, wireless mesh backbones (a network of mesh nodes, including one mesh gateway), and roadside access points. The downlink capacity scaling is derived for each kind of infrastructure. Considering that the deployment/operation costs of different infrastructure are highly variable, the capacity-cost tradeoffs of different deployments are examined. The results from the thesis demonstrate the feasibility of deploying non-cellular infrastructure for supporting high-bandwidth vehicular applications.
Thirdly, the fundamental impact of traffic signals at road intersection on drive-thru Internet access is particularly studied. The thesis analyzes the time-average throughput capacity of a typical vehicle driving through randomly deployed roadside Wi-Fi networks. Interestingly, we show a significant throughput gain for vehicles stopping at intersections due to red signals. The results provide a quick and efficient way of determining the Wi-Fi deployment scale according to required quality of services.
In summary, the analysis developed and the scaling laws derived in the thesis provide should be very useful for understanding the fundamental performance of vehicular networks
Distributed and Asynchronous Data Collection in Cognitive Radio Networks with Fairness Consideration
As a promising communication paradigm, Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) have paved a road for Secondary Users (SUs) to opportunistically exploit unused licensed spectrum without causing unacceptable interference to Primary Users (PUs). In this paper, we study the distributed data collection problem for asynchronous CRNs, which has not been addressed before. We study the Proper Carrier-sensing Range (PCR) for SUs. By working with this PCR, an SU can successfully conduct data transmission without disturbing the activities of PUs and other SUs. Subsequently, based on the PCR, we propose an Asynchronous Distributed Data Collection (ADDC) algorithm with fairness consideration for CRNs. ADDC collects a snapshot of data to the base station in a distributed manner without the time synchronization requirement. The algorithm is scalable and more practical compared with centralized and synchronized algorithms. Through comprehensive theoretical analysis, we show that ADDC is order-optimal in terms of delay and capacity, as long as an SU has a positive probability to access the spectrum. Furthermore, we extend ADDC to deal with the continuous data collection issue, and analyze the delay and capacity performances of ADDC for continuous data collection, which are also proven to be order-optimal. Finally, extensive simulation results indicate that ADDC can effectively accomplish a data collection task and significantly reduce data collection delay. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER

Integrated cellular and device-to-device networks
textDevice-to-device (D2D) networking enables direct discovery and communication between cellular subscribers that are in proximity, thus bypassing the base stations (BSs). In principle, exploiting direct communication between nearby mobile devices will improve spectrum utilization, overall throughput, and energy consumption, while enabling new peer-to-peer and location-based applications and services. D2D-enabled broadband communication technology is also required by public safety networks that must function when cellular networks are not available. Integrating D2D into cellular networks, however, poses many challenges and risks to the long-standing cellular architecture, which is centered around the BSs. This dissertation identifies outstanding technical challenges in D2D-enabled cellular networks and addresses them with novel models and fundamental analysis. First, this dissertation develops a baseline hybrid network model consisting of both ad hoc nodes and cellular infrastructure. This model uses Poisson point processes to model the random and unpredictable locations of mobile users. It also captures key features of multicast D2D including multicast receiver heterogeneity and retransmissions while being tractable for analytical purpose. Several important multicast D2D metrics including coverage probability, mean number of covered receivers per multicast session, and multicast throughput are analytically characterized under the proposed model. Second, D2D mode selection which means that a potential D2D pair can switch between direct and cellular modes is incorporated into the hybrid network model. The extended model is applied to study spectrum sharing between cellular and D2D communications. Two spectrum sharing models, overlay and underlay, are investigated under a unified analytical framework. Analytical rate expressions are derived and applied to optimize the design of spectrum sharing. It is found that, from an overall mean-rate perspective, both overlay and underlay bring performance improvements (vs. pure cellular). Third, the single-antenna hybrid network model is extended to multi-antenna transmission to study the interplay between massive MIMO (multi-input multiple-output) and underlaid D2D networking. The spectral efficiency of such multi-antenna hybrid networks is investigated under both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) assumptions. Compared to the case without D2D, there is a loss in cellular spectral efficiency due to D2D underlay. With perfect CSI, the loss can be completely overcome if the number of canceled D2D interfering signals is scaled appropriately. With imperfect CSI, in addition to pilot contamination, a new asymptotic underlay contamination effect arises. Finally, motivated by the fact that transmissions in D2D discovery are usually not or imperfectly synchronized, this dissertation studies the effect of asynchronous multicarrier transmission and proposes a tractable signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) model. The proposed model is used to analytically characterize system-level performance of asynchronous wireless networks.
