Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
Joint transceiver design and power optimization for wireless sensor networks in underground mines
With the great developments in wireless communication technologies, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have gained attention worldwide in the past decade and are now being used in health monitoring, disaster management, defense, telecommunications, etc. Such networks are used in many industrial and consumer applications such as industrial process and environment monitoring, among others. A WSN network is a collection of specialized transducers known as sensor nodes with a communication link distributed randomly in any locations to monitor environmental parameters such as water level, and temperature. Each sensor node is equipped with a transducer, a signal processor, a power unit, and a transceiver. WSNs are now being widely used in the underground mining industry to monitor environmental parameters, including the amount of gas, water, temperature, humidity, oxygen level, dust, etc. The WSN for environment monitoring can be equivalently replaced by a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network. Multi-hop relay networks have attracted significant research interest in recent years for their capability in increasing the coverage range. The network communication link from a source to a destination is implemented using the amplify-and-forward (AF) or decode-and-forward (DF) schemes. The AF relay receives information from the previous relay and simply amplifies the received signal and then forwards it to the next relay. On the other hand, the DF relay first decodes the received signal and then forwards it to the next relay in the second stage if it can perfectly decode the incoming signal. For analytical simplicity, in this thesis, we consider the AF relaying scheme and the results of this work can also be developed for the DF relay. The transceiver design for multi-hop MIMO relay is very challenging. This is because at the L-th relay stage, there are 2L possible channels. So, for a large scale network, it is not economical to send the signal through all possible links. Instead, we can find the best path from source-to-destination that gives the highest end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We can minimize the mean square error (MSE) or bit error rate (BER) objective function by sending the signal using the selected path. The set of relay in the path remains active and the rest of the relays are turned off which can save power to enhance network life-time. The best path signal transmission has been carried out in the literature for 2-hop MIMO relay and for multiple relaying it becomes very complex. In the first part of this thesis, we propose an optimal best path finding algorithm at perfect channel state information (CSI). We consider a parallel multi-hop multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) AF relay system where a linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver is used at the destination. We simplify the parallel network into equivalent series multi-hop MIMO relay link using best relaying, where the best relay ..
Wireless MIMO Switching: Weighted Sum Mean Square Error and Sum Rate Optimization
This paper addresses joint transceiver and relay design for a wireless
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switching scheme that enables data
exchange among multiple users. Here, a multi-antenna relay linearly precodes
the received (uplink) signals from multiple users before forwarding the signal
in the downlink, where the purpose of precoding is to let each user receive its
desired signal with interference from other users suppressed. The problem of
optimizing the precoder based on various design criteria is typically
non-convex and difficult to solve. The main contribution of this paper is a
unified approach to solve the weighted sum mean square error (MSE) minimization
and weighted sum rate maximization problems in MIMO switching. Specifically, an
iterative algorithm is proposed for jointly optimizing the relay's precoder and
the users' receive filters to minimize the weighted sum MSE. It is also shown
that the weighted sum rate maximization problem can be reformulated as an
iterated weighted sum MSE minimization problem and can therefore be solved
similarly to the case of weighted sum MSE minimization. With properly chosen
initial values, the proposed iterative algorithms are asymptotically optimal in
both high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes for MIMO switching,
either with or without self-interference cancellation (a.k.a., physical-layer
network coding). Numerical results show that the optimized MIMO switching
scheme based on the proposed algorithms significantly outperforms existing
approaches in the literature.Comment: This manuscript is under 2nd review of IEEE Transactions on

Robust transceiver designs for MIMO relay communication systems
The thesis investigates robust linear and non-linear transceiver design problems for wireless MIMO relay communication systems with the assumption that the partial information of the channel is available at the relay node. The joint source and relay optimization problems for MIMO relay systems are highly nonconvex, in general. We transform the problems into suitable forms which can be efficiently solved using standard convex optimization techniques. The proposed design schemes outperform the existing techniques
Multiuser Multihop MIMO Relay System Design Based on Mutual Information Maximization
In this paper, we consider multiuser multihop relay communication systems, where the users, relays, and the destination node may have multiple antennas. We address the issue of source and relay precoding matrices design to maximize the system mutual information (MI). By exploiting the linkbetween the maximal MI and the weighted minimal mean-squared error (WMMSE) objective functions, we show that the intractable maximal MI-based source and relay optimization problem can be solved via the WMMSE-based source and relay design through an iterative approach which is guaranteed toconverge to at least a stationary point. For the WMMSE problem, we derive the optimal structure of the relay precoding matrices and show that the WMMSE matrix at the destination node can be decomposed into the sum of WMMSE matrices at all hops. Under a (moderately) high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) condition, this WMMSE matrix decomposition significantly simplifies the solution to the WMMSE problem. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm
Linear Precoding Designs for Amplify-and-Forward Multiuser Two-Way Relay Systems
Two-way relaying can improve spectral efficiency in two-user cooperative
communications. It also has great potential in multiuser systems. A major
problem of designing a multiuser two-way relay system (MU-TWRS) is transceiver
or precoding design to suppress co-channel interference. This paper aims to
study linear precoding designs for a cellular MU-TWRS where a multi-antenna
base station (BS) conducts bi-directional communications with multiple mobile
stations (MSs) via a multi-antenna relay station (RS) with amplify-and-forward
relay strategy. The design goal is to optimize uplink performance, including
total mean-square error (Total-MSE) and sum rate, while maintaining individual
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement for downlink
signals. We show that the BS precoding design with the RS precoder fixed can be
converted to a standard second order cone programming (SOCP) and the optimal
solution is obtained efficiently. The RS precoding design with the BS precoder
fixed, on the other hand, is non-convex and we present an iterative algorithm
to find a local optimal solution. Then, the joint BS-RS precoding is obtained
by solving the BS precoding and the RS precoding alternately. Comprehensive
simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed
precoding designs.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted by IEEE TW
