    Adaptive tracking of people and vehicles using mobile platforms

    Tracking algorithms have important applications in detection of humans and vehicles for border security and other areas. For large-scale deployment of such algorithms, it is critical to provide methods for their cost- and energy-efficient realization. To this end, commodity mobile devices have significant potential for use as prototyping and testing platforms due to their low cost, widespread availability, and integration of advanced communications, sensing, and processing features. Prototypes developed on mobile platforms can be tested, fine-tuned, and demonstrated in the field and then provide reference implementations for application-specific disposable sensor node implementations that are targeted for deployment. In this paper, we develop a novel, adaptive tracking system that is optimized for energy-efficient, real-time operation on off-the-shelf mobile platforms. Our tracking system applies principles of dynamic data-driven application systems (DDDAS) to periodically monitor system operating characteristics and apply these measurements to dynamically adapt the specific classifier configurations that the system employs. Our resulting adaptive approach enables powerful optimization of trade-offs among energy consumption, real-time performance, and tracking accuracy based on time-varying changes in operational characteristics. Through experiments employing an Android-based tablet platform, we demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed tracking system design for multimode detection of human and vehicle targets.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance

    To control the border more effectively, countries may deploy a detection system that enables real-time surveillance of border integrity. Events such as border crossings need to be monitored in real time so that any border entries can be noted by border security forces and destinations marked for apprehension. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are promising for border security surveillance because they enable enforcement teams to monitor events in the physical environment. In this work, probabilistic models have been presented to investigate senor development schemes while considering the environmental factors that affect the sensor performance. Simulation studies have been carried out using the OPNET to verify the theoretical analysis and to find an optimal node deployment scheme that is robust and efficient by incorporating geographical coordination in the design. Measures such as adding camera and range-extended antenna to each node have been investigated to improve the system performance.     In the past 12 to 14 of January 2021, the University of Évora, in the framework of the LIFE LINES project, and the Infrastructure and Ecology Network Europe held the online event IENE International Conference, under the theme “LIFE LINES – Linear Infrastructure Networks with Ecological Solutions”. We had 293 attendees from 40 different countries representing the five continents. During three days, participants were able to assist to 115 full oral presentations, 36 lightning talks, 13 workshops and chat with 40 posters authors, representing studies and projects worldwide. The event counted with 50 thematic sessions, running in five parallel sessions mixing live and pre-recorded interventions

    UAV as a Service: Providing On-Demand Access and On-The-Fly Retasking of Multi-Tenant UAVs Using Cloud Services

    As commercial roles for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) become more well-defined and demand for the services provided by them increases, UAVs rely more on new cloud computing services and co-operative coordination to provide mission planning, control, tracking and data processing. We present UAV as a Service (UAVaaS) framework, which brings features commonly found in traditional cloud services, such as Infrastructure, Platform, and Software as a Service, to the domain of UAVs. Our work aims to conceptualize and design UAVaaS for commercial applications. Specifically, a cloud-provided orchestration framework that allows multi-tenant UAVs to easily serve multiple heterogenous clients at once and automatically re-task them to users with higher priority, mid-flight, if needed. This research utilizes a spiral model design approach to formally define the UAVaaS framework, and to identify key focus areas, protocols, data structures, network topologies, and message patterns. A safety and security analysis is performed to mitigate potential risks that are present in the system and a prototype simulation is implemented as proof of concept

It describes the methods and tools used to identify the needs of elderly and disabled (E&D) travellers. The result of this investigation is a summary of the requirements of elderly and disabled travellers using different modes of transport, including private cars, buses/trams, metros/trains, ships and airplanes. It provides a generic user requirements specification which can guide the design of all transport telematics systems. However, it is important to stress that projects should also capture a more detailed definition of user requirements for their specific application area or system
