MIMO-UFMC Transceiver Schemes for Millimeter Wave Wireless Communications
The UFMC modulation is among the most considered solutions for the
realization of beyond-OFDM air interfaces for future wireless networks. This
paper focuses on the design and analysis of an UFMC transceiver equipped with
multiple antennas and operating at millimeter wave carrier frequencies. The
paper provides the full mathematical model of a MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking
into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of
the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both
for the case of single-packet isolated transmission, and for the case of
multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, the paper
also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is
inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of
spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, the several considered detection
structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error-rate,
root-mean-square-error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that
the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear MMSE data
detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the
removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput
gains of about 10 - 13 . The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also
numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the
linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance
Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems
Detect to Learn: Structure Learning with Attention and Decision Feedback for MIMO-OFDM Receive Processing
The limited over-the-air (OTA) pilot symbols in
multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing
(MIMO-OFDM) systems presents a major challenge for detecting transmitted data
symbols at the receiver, especially for machine learning-based approaches.
While it is crucial to explore effective ways to exploit pilots, one can also
take advantage of the data symbols to improve detection performance. Thus, this
paper introduces an online attention-based approach, namely RC-AttStructNet-DF,
that can efficiently utilize pilot symbols and be dynamically updated with the
detected payload data using the decision feedback (DF) mechanism. Reservoir
computing (RC) is employed in the time domain network to facilitate efficient
online training. The frequency domain network adopts the novel 2D multi-head
attention (MHA) module to capture the time and frequency correlations, and the
structural-based StructNet to facilitate the DF mechanism. The attention loss
is designed to learn the frequency domain network. The DF mechanism further
enhances detection performance by dynamically tracking the channel changes
through detected data symbols. The effectiveness of the RC-AttStructNet-DF
approach is demonstrated through extensive experiments in MIMO-OFDM and massive
MIMO-OFDM systems with different modulation orders and under various scenarios.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transactions on Communication
Channel estimation for SISO and MIMO OFDM communications systems.
Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.Telecommunications in the current information age is increasingly relying on the wireless link. This is because wireless communication has made possible a variety of services ranging from voice to data and now to multimedia. Consequently, demand for new wireless capacity is growing rapidly at a very alarming rate. In a bid to cope with challenges of increasing demand for higher data rate, better quality of service, and higher network capacity, there is a migration from Single Input Single Output (SISO) antenna technology to a more promising Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology. On the other hand, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has emerged as a very popular multi-carrier modulation technique to combat the problems associated with physical properties of the wireless channels such as multipath fading, dispersion, and interference. The combination of MIMO technology with OFDM techniques, known as MIMO-OFDM Systems, is considered as a promising solution to enhance the data rate of future broadband wireless communication Systems. This thesis addresses a major area of challenge to both SISO-OFDM and MIMO-OFDM Systems; estimation of accurate channel state information (CSI) in order to make possible coherent detection of the transmitted signal at the receiver end of the system. Hence, the first novel contribution of this thesis is the development of a low complexity adaptive algorithm that is robust against both slow and fast fading channel scenarios, in comparison with other algorithms employed in literature, to implement soft iterative channel estimator for turbo equalizer-based receiver for single antenna communication Systems. Subsequently, a Fast Data Projection Method (FDPM) subspace tracking algorithm is adapted to derive Channel Impulse Response Estimator for implementation of Decision Directed Channel Estimation (DDCE) for Single Input Single Output - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (SISO-OFDM) Systems. This is implemented in the context of a more realistic Fractionally Spaced-Channel Impulse Response (FS-CIR) channel model, as against the channel characterized by a Sample Spaced-Channel Impulse Response (SS)-CIR widely assumed by other authors. In addition, a fast convergence Variable Step Size Normalized Least Mean Square (VSSNLMS)-based predictor, with low computational complexity in comparison with others in literatures, is derived for the implementation of the CIR predictor module of the DDCE scheme. A novel iterative receiver structure for the FDPM-based Decision Directed Channel Estimation scheme is also designed for SISO-OFDM Systems. The iterative idea is based on Turbo iterative principle. It is shown that improvement in the performance can be achieved with the iterative DDCE scheme for OFDM system in comparison with the non iterative scheme. Lastly, an iterative receiver structure for FDPM-based DDCE scheme earlier designed for SISO OFDM is extended to MIMO-OFDM Systems. In addition, Variable Step Size Normalized Least Mean Square (VSSNLMS)-based channel transfer function estimator is derived in the context of MIMO Channel for the implementation of the CTF estimator module of the iterative Decision Directed Channel Estimation scheme for MIMO-OFDM Systems in place of linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. The VSSNLMS-based channel transfer function estimator is found to show improved MSE performance of about -4 MSE (dB) at SNR of 5dB in comparison with linear MMSE-based channel transfer function estimator
Optimisation of wireless communication system by exploitation of channel diversity
Communication systems are susceptible to degradation in performance because of interference received through their side lobes. The interference may be deliberate electronic counter measure (ECM), Accidental RF Interference (RFI) or natural noise. The growth of interference communication systems have given rise to different algorithms, Adaptive array techniques offer a possible solution to this problem of interference received through side lobes because of their automatic null steering in both spatial and frequency domains. Key requirement for space-time architecture is to use robust adaptive algorithms to ensure reliable operation of the smart antenna. Space division multiple access (SDMA) involves the use of adaptive nulling to allow two or more users (mobiles) in the same cell to share same frequency and time slot. One beam is formed for each user with nulls in the direction of other users. Different approaches have been used to identify the interferer from desired user. Thus a basic model for determining the angle of arrival of incoming signals, an appropriate antenna beam forming and adaptive algorithms are used for array processing. There is an insatiable demand for capacity in wireless data networks and cellular radio communication systems. However the RF environment that these systems operate in is harsh and severely limits the capacity of traditional digital wireless networks. With normal wireless systems this limits the data rate in cellular radio environments to approximately 200 kbps whereas much higher data rates in excess of 25Mbps are required. A common wireless channel problem is that of frequency selective multi-path fading. To combat this problem, new types of wireless interface are being developed which utilise space, time and frequency diversity to provide increasing resilience to the channel imperfections. At any instant in time, the channel conditions may be such that one or more of these diversity methods may offer a superior performance to the other diversity methods. The overall aim of the research is to develop new systems that use a novel combination of smart antenna MIMO techniques and an advanced communication system based on advanced system configuration that could be exploited by IEEE 802.20 user specification approach for broadband wireless networking. The new system combines the Multi-input Multi-output communication system with frequency diversity in the form of an OFDM modulator. The benefits of each approach are examined under similar channel conditions and results presented.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
Adjustable dynamic range for paper reduction schemes in large-scale MIMO-OFDM systems
In a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) communication system there is a necessity to limit the power that the output antenna amplifiers can deliver. Their signal is a
combination of many independent channels, so the demanded amplitude can peak to many times the average value. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
(OFDM) system causes high peak signals to occur because many subcarrier components are added by an inverse discrete Fourier transformation process at the base station. This causes out-of-band spectral regrowth. If simple clipping of the input signal is used, there will be in-band distortions in the transmitted signals and the bit error rate will increase substantially.
This work presents a novel technique that reduces the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). It is a combination of two main stages, a variable clipping level and an
Adaptive Optimizer that takes advantage of the channel state information sent from all users in the cell.
Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves a better overall system performance than that of conventional peak reduction systems in terms of the symbol
error rate. As a result, the linear output of the power amplifiers can be minimized with a great saving in cost

In the literature, there is no convenient survey study that rounds up all the necessary points to be investigated concerning such systems. The current deeper review paper inspects and interprets the state of the art and addresses several research axes related to MIMO-OFDM systems. Two topics have received special attention: MIMO waveforms and MIMO-OFDM channel estimation. The existing MIMO hardware and software innovations, in addition to the MIMO-OFDM equalization techniques, are discussed concisely. In the literature, only a few authors have discussed the MIMO channel estimation and modeling problems for a variety of MIMO systems. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been until now no review paper specifically discussing the recent works concerning channel estimation and the equalization process for MIMO-OFDM systems. Hence, the current work focuses on analyzing the recently used algorithms in the field, which could be a rich reference for researchers. Moreover, some research perspectives are identified.publishersversionpublishe
Smart Antenna-Aided Multicarrier Transceivers for Mobile Communications
In spite of an immense interest from both the academic and the industrial communities, a practical multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver architecture, capable of approaching channel capacity boundaries in realistic channel conditions remains largely an open problem. Consequently, in this treatise I derive an advanced iterative, so called turbo multi-antenna-multi-carrier (MAMC) receiver architecture. Following the philosophy of turbo processing, our turbo spacial division multiplexed (SDM)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) receiver comprises a succession of soft-input-soft-output detection modules, which iteratively exchange soft bit-related information and thus facilitate a substantial improvement of the overall system performance. In this treatise, I explore two major aspects of the turbo wireless mobile receiver design. Firstly, I consider the problem of soft-decision-feedback aided acquisition of the propagation conditions experienced by the transmitted signal and secondly, I explore the issue of the soft-input-soft-output detection of the spatially-multiplexed information-carrying signals
