Accelerating recurrent neural network training using sequence bucketing and multi-GPU data parallelization

An efficient algorithm for recurrent neural network training is presented. The approach increases the training speed for tasks where a length of the input sequence may vary significantly. The proposed approach is based on the optimal batch bucketing by input sequence length and data parallelization on multiple graphical processing units. The baseline training performance without sequence bucketing is compared with the proposed solution for a different number of buckets. An example is given for the online handwriting recognition task using an LSTM recurrent neural network. The evaluation is performed in terms of the wall clock time, number of epochs, and validation loss value.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Comments, 2016 IEEE First International Conference on Data Stream Mining & Processing (DSMP), Lviv, 201

Single stream parallelization of generalized LSTM-like RNNs on a GPU

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have shown outstanding performance on processing sequence data. However, they suffer from long training time, which demands parallel implementations of the training procedure. Parallelization of the training algorithms for RNNs are very challenging because internal recurrent paths form dependencies between two different time frames. In this paper, we first propose a generalized graph-based RNN structure that covers the most popular long short-term memory (LSTM) network. Then, we present a parallelization approach that automatically explores parallelisms of arbitrary RNNs by analyzing the graph structure. The experimental results show that the proposed approach shows great speed-up even with a single training stream, and further accelerates the training when combined with multiple parallel training streams.Comment: Accepted by the 40th IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) 201

Exploring efficient neural architectures for linguistic-acoustic mapping in text-to-speech

    Get PDF
Conversion from text to speech relies on the accurate mapping from linguistic to acoustic symbol sequences, for which current practice employs recurrent statistical models such as recurrent neural networks. Despite the good performance of such models (in terms of low distortion in the generated speech), their recursive structure with intermediate affine transformations tends to make them slow to train and to sample from. In this work, we explore two different mechanisms that enhance the operational efficiency of recurrent neural networks, and study their performance–speed trade-off. The first mechanism is based on the quasi-recurrent neural network, where expensive affine transformations are removed from temporal connections and placed only on feed-forward computational directions. The second mechanism includes a module based on the transformer decoder network, designed without recurrent connections but emulating them with attention and positioning codes. Our results show that the proposed decoder networks are competitive in terms of distortion when compared to a recurrent baseline, whilst being significantly faster in terms of CPU and GPU inference time. The best performing model is the one based on the quasi-recurrent mechanism, reaching the same level of naturalness as the recurrent neural network based model with a speedup of 11.2 on CPU and 3.3 on GPU.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Theano: new features and speed improvements

Theano is a linear algebra compiler that optimizes a user's symbolically-specified mathematical computations to produce efficient low-level implementations. In this paper, we present new features and efficiency improvements to Theano, and benchmarks demonstrating Theano's performance relative to Torch7, a recently introduced machine learning library, and to RNNLM, a C++ library targeted at recurrent neural networks.Comment: Presented at the Deep Learning Workshop, NIPS 201

TheanoLM - An Extensible Toolkit for Neural Network Language Modeling

We present a new tool for training neural network language models (NNLMs), scoring sentences, and generating text. The tool has been written using Python library Theano, which allows researcher to easily extend it and tune any aspect of the training process. Regardless of the flexibility, Theano is able to generate extremely fast native code that can utilize a GPU or multiple CPU cores in order to parallelize the heavy numerical computations. The tool has been evaluated in difficult Finnish and English conversational speech recognition tasks, and significant improvement was obtained over our best back-off n-gram models. The results that we obtained in the Finnish task were compared to those from existing RNNLM and RWTHLM toolkits, and found to be as good or better, while training times were an order of magnitude shorter
