Reassessing second language reading comprehension: Insights from the psycholinguistics notion of sentence processing
Theories and practices in second language reading pedagogy often overlook the sentence processing description from the psycholinguistics perspective. Second language reading comprehension is easily associated with vocabulary learning or discourse strategy. Yet, such activities can lead to an unnatural way of reading such as translating vocabularies or pointing out information as required. Meanwhile the authentic way of reading should encourage a natural stream of ideas to be interpreted from sentence to sentence. As suggested by the sentence processing notion from the psycholinguistics point of view, syntax appears to be the key to effective and authentic reading as opposed to the general belief of semantic or discourse information being the primary concern. This article argues that understanding the architecture of sentence processing, with syntactic parsing at the core of the underlying mechanism, can offer insights into the second language reading pedagogy. The concepts of syntactic parsing, reanalysis, and sentence processing models are described to give the idea of how sentence processing works. Additionally, a critical review on the differences between L1 and L2 sentence processing is presented considering the recent debate on individual differences as significant indicators of nativelike L2 sentence processing. Lastly, implications for the L2 reading pedagogy and potential implementation in instructional setting are discussed
Immune cognition, social justice and asthma: structured stress and the developing immune system
We explore the implications of IR Cohen's work on immune
cognition for understanding rising rates of asthma morbidity
and mortality in the US. Immune cognition is conjoined with
central nervous system cognition, and with the cognitive
function of the embedding sociocultural networks by which
individuals are acculturated and through which they work with others to meet challenges of threat and opportunity.
Using a mathematical model, we find that externally-
imposed patterns of 'structured stress' can, through their
effect on a child's socioculture, become synergistic with
the development of immune cognition, triggering the persistence of an atopic Th2 phenotype, a necessary precursor to asthma and other immune disease. Reversal of the rising tide of asthma and related chronic diseases in the US thus seems unlikely without a 21st Century version of the earlier Great Urban Reforms which ended the scourge of infectious diseases
Composition, Attention, or Both?
In this paper, we propose a novel architecture called Composition Attention
Grammars (CAGs) that recursively compose subtrees into a single vector
representation with a composition function, and selectively attend to previous
structural information with a self-attention mechanism. We investigate whether
these components -- the composition function and the self-attention mechanism
-- can both induce human-like syntactic generalization. Specifically, we train
language models (LMs) with and without these two components with the model
sizes carefully controlled, and evaluate their syntactic generalization
performance against six test circuits on the SyntaxGym benchmark. The results
demonstrated that the composition function and the self-attention mechanism
both play an important role to make LMs more human-like, and closer inspection
of linguistic phenomenon implied that the composition function allowed
syntactic features, but not semantic features, to percolate into subtree

Community Lynching and the US Asthma Epidemic
We explore the implications of IR Cohen's work on immune cognition for understanding rising rates of asthma morbidity and mortality in the US. Immune cognition is inherently linked with central nervous system cognition, and with the cognitive function of the embedding sociocultural networks by which individuals are acculturated and through which they work with others to meet challenges of threat and opportunity. Externally-imposed patterns of 'structured stress' can, through their effect on a child's socioculture, become synergistic with the development of immune cognition, triggering the persistence of an atopic Th2 phenotype, a necessary precursor to asthma and other immune diseases. Structured stress in the US particularly includes the cross sectional and longitudinal effects of a systematic destruction of minority urban communities occurring since the end of World War II which we characterize as community lynching. Reversal of the rising tide of asthma and related chronic diseases in the US thus seems unlikely without a 21st Century version of the earlier Great Urban Reforms which ended the scourge of infectious diseases, in particular an end to the de-facto ethnic cleansing of minority neighborhoo
Darwin's Rainbow: Evolutionary radiation and the spectrum of consciousness
Evolution is littered with paraphyletic convergences: many roads lead to functional Romes. We propose here another example - an equivalence class structure factoring the broad realm of possible realizations of the Baars Global Workspace consciousness model. The construction suggests many different physiological systems can support rapidly shifting, sometimes highly tunable, temporary assemblages of interacting unconscious cognitive modules. The discovery implies various animal taxa exhibiting behaviors we broadly recognize as conscious are, in fact, simply expressing different forms of the same underlying phenomenon. Mathematically, we find much slower, and even multiple simultaneous, versions of the basic structure can operate over very long timescales, a kind of paraconsciousness often ascribed to group phenomena. The variety of possibilities, a veritable rainbow, suggests minds today may be only a small surviving fraction of ancient evolutionary radiations - bush phylogenies of consciousness and paraconsciousness. Under this scenario, the resulting diversity was subsequently pruned by selection and chance extinction. Though few traces of the radiation may be found in the direct fossil record, exaptations and vestiges are scattered across the living mind. Humans, for instance, display an uncommonly profound synergism between individual consciousness and their embedding cultural heritages, enabling efficient Lamarkian adaptation
