Modeling and estimation of internal friction in cloth
Force-deformation measurements of cloth exhibit significant hysteresis, and many researchers have identified internal friction as the source of this effect. However, it has not been incorporated into computer animation models of cloth. In this paper, we propose a model of internal friction based on an augmented reparameterization of Dahl's model, and we show that this model provides a good match to several important features of cloth hysteresis even with a minimal set of parameters. We also propose novel parameter estimation procedures that are based on simple and inexpensive setups and need only sparse data, as opposed to the complex hardware and dense data acquisition of previous methods. Finally, we provide an algorithm for the efficient simulation of internal friction, and we demonstrate it on simulation examples that show disparate behavior with and without internal friction
Real-time Error Control for Surgical Simulation
Objective: To present the first real-time a posteriori error-driven adaptive
finite element approach for real-time simulation and to demonstrate the method
on a needle insertion problem. Methods: We use corotational elasticity and a
frictional needle/tissue interaction model. The problem is solved using finite
elements within SOFA. The refinement strategy relies upon a hexahedron-based
finite element method, combined with a posteriori error estimation driven local
-refinement, for simulating soft tissue deformation. Results: We control the
local and global error level in the mechanical fields (e.g. displacement or
stresses) during the simulation. We show the convergence of the algorithm on
academic examples, and demonstrate its practical usability on a percutaneous
procedure involving needle insertion in a liver. For the latter case, we
compare the force displacement curves obtained from the proposed adaptive
algorithm with that obtained from a uniform refinement approach. Conclusions:
Error control guarantees that a tolerable error level is not exceeded during
the simulations. Local mesh refinement accelerates simulations. Significance:
Our work provides a first step to discriminate between discretization error and
modeling error by providing a robust quantification of discretization error

Robust Execution of Contact-Rich Motion Plans by Hybrid Force-Velocity Control
In hybrid force-velocity control, the robot can use velocity control in some
directions to follow a trajectory, while performing force control in other
directions to maintain contacts with the environment regardless of positional
errors. We call this way of executing a trajectory hybrid servoing. We propose
an algorithm to compute hybrid force-velocity control actions for hybrid
servoing. We quantify the robustness of a control action and make trade-offs
between different requirements by formulating the control synthesis as
optimization problems. Our method can efficiently compute the dimensions,
directions and magnitudes of force and velocity controls. We demonstrated by
experiments the effectiveness of our method in several contact-rich

Controlling the Error on Target Motion through Real-time Mesh Adaptation: Applications to Deep Brain Stimulation
We present an error-controlled mesh refinement procedure for needle insertion
simulation and apply it to the simulation of electrode implantation for deep
brain stimulation, including brain shift. Our approach enables to control the
error in the computation of the displacement and stress fields around the
needle tip and needle shaft by suitably refining the mesh, whilst maintaining a
coarser mesh in other parts of the domain. We demonstrate through academic and
practical examples that our approach increases the accuracy of the displacement
and stress fields around the needle without increasing the computational
expense. This enables real-time simulations. The proposed methodology has
direct implications to increase the accuracy and control the computational
expense of the simulation of percutaneous procedures such as biopsy,
brachytherapy, regional anesthesia, or cryotherapy and can be essential to the

Real-Time Numerical Simulation for Accurate Soft Tissues Modeling during Haptic Interaction
The simulation of fabrics physics and its interaction with the human body has been largely studied in recent years to provide realistic-looking garments and wears specifically in the entertainment business. When the purpose of the simulation is to obtain scientific measures and detailed mechanical properties of the interaction, the underlying physical models should be enhanced to obtain better simulation accuracy increasing the modeling complexity and relaxing the simulation timing constraints to properly solve the set of equations under analysis. However, in the specific field of haptic interaction, the desiderata are to have both physical consistency and high frame rate to display stable and coherent stimuli as feedback to the user requiring a tradeoff between accuracy and real-time interaction. This work introduces a haptic system for the evaluation of the fabric hand of specific garments either existing or yet to be produced in a virtual reality simulation. The modeling is based on the co-rotational Finite Element approach that allows for large displacements but the small deformation of the elements. The proposed system can be beneficial for the fabrics industry both in the design phase or in the presentation phase, where a virtual fabric portfolio can be shown to customers around the world. Results exhibit the feasibility of high-frequency real-time simulation for haptic interaction with virtual garments employing realistic mechanical properties of the fabric materials
DiffCloth: Differentiable Cloth Simulation with Dry Frictional Contact
Cloth simulation has wide applications in computer animation, garment design,
and robot-assisted dressing. This work presents a differentiable cloth
simulator whose additional gradient information facilitates cloth-related
applications. Our differentiable simulator extends a state-of-the-art cloth
simulator based on Projective Dynamics (PD) and with dry frictional contact. We
draw inspiration from previous work to propose a fast and novel method for
deriving gradients in PD-based cloth simulation with dry frictional contact.
Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the
usefulness of gradients in contact-rich cloth simulation. Finally, we
demonstrate the efficacy of our simulator in a number of downstream
applications, including system identification, trajectory optimization for
assisted dressing, closed-loop control, inverse design, and real-to-sim
transfer. We observe a substantial speedup obtained from using our gradient
information in solving most of these applications
Efficient Contact Modeling using Compliance Warping
International audienceContact handling is the key of deformable objects simulation, since without it, objects can not interact with their environment nor with the user. In this paper, we propose a novel and very efficient approach for precise computation of contact response between various types of objects commonly used in computer animation. Being constraint based, this method ensures physical correctness, and respects Singorini s law. It can be used with any deformation model, and is based on the use of the initial compliance matrix and contact warping. Thus, the contact response can be computed efficiently, and the object deformation can still be done in a physically plausible way provided the underlying model is physical
