    Statistical user interfaces

    A statistical user interface is an interface between a human user and a statistical software package. Whenever we use a statistical software package we want to solve a specific statistical problem. But very often at first it is necessary to learn specific things about the software package. Everyone of us knows about the ?religious wars? concerning the question which statistical software package/method is the best for a certain task; see Marron (1996) and Cleveland and Loader (1996) and related internet discussions. Experienced statisticians use a bunch of different statistical software packages rather than a single one; although all of the major companies (at least the marketing departments) tell us that we only need their software package. --

    Web and Event-driven applications (EDS) is a class of applications that is quickly becoming ubiquitous. All EDS take sequences of events (e.g., messages, mouse-clicks) as input, change their state, and produce an output (e.g., events, system calls, text messages), where as in web, user session data gathered as users operate web applications can be considered as input, change their state, and produce an output. Examples include web applications, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), network protocols, device drivers, and embedded applications. Testing for functional correctness of EDS such as stand-alone GUI and web-based applications is critical to many organizations. These applications share several important characteristics. Both are particularly challenging to test because users can invoke many different sequences of events that affect application behavior. Hence here a novel model is provided to rank the test cases based on their prioritization

    A Regression Test Selection Technique for Graphical User Interfaces

    Regression testing is a quality control measure to ensure that the newly modified part of the software still complies with its specified requirements and that the unmodified part has not been affected by the maintenance activity. Regression testing is an important and expensive activity during the software maintenance process and its purpose is to ensure quality and reliability in modified software. Regression testing selection techniques are focused on the reusability of existing test suites for a modified program from a previous version. Many regression testing selection techniques have been approached for conventional and object-oriented software. There is little discussion about those techniques to be applied for the Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). This thesis addresses the gap. GUIs have characteristics different from traditional software, and the conventional testing techniques do not directly apply to GUIs. Unlike most previous techniques for selective retest, this thesis focuses on developing an event driven regression testing selection technique for GUIs. It defines an event dependence graph (EDG) to identify the interaction and relationship of the events within GUI components, develops an algorithm to construct the EDG for GUIs, and presents the GUI modeling structure and its selection retest technique. An algorithm is given to determine and generate a modified test suite automatically for GUI based on its original version. Experiments are presented on an implementation of this solution and discusses newly found challenges when applied to an established GUI application. Finally, feasibility and future areas of research are addressed on the findings during the implementation of the solution

    The TASTE Toolset: turning human designed heterogeneous systems into computer built homogeneous software.

    The TASTE tool-set results from spin-off studies of the ASSERT project, which started in 2004 with the objective to propose innovative and pragmatic solutions to develop real-time software. One of the primary targets was satellite flight software, but it appeared quickly that their characteristics were shared among various embedded systems. The solutions that we developed now comprise a process and several tools ; the development process is based on the idea that real-time, embedded systems are heterogeneous by nature and that a unique UML-like language was not helping neither their construction, nor their validation. Rather than inventing yet another "ultimate" language, TASTE makes the link between existing and mature technologies such as Simulink, SDL, ASN.1, C, Ada, and generates complete, homogeneous software-based systems that one can straightforwardly download and execute on a physical target. Our current prototype is moving toward a marketed product, and sequel studies are already in place to support, among others, FPGA systems

    SOCR Analyses: Implementation and Demonstration of a New Graphical Statistics Educational Toolkit

    The web-based, Java-written SOCR (Statistical Online Computational Resource) tools have been utilized in many undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses for seven years now (Dinov 2006; Dinov et al. 2008b). It has been proven that these resources can successfully improve students' learning (Dinov et al. 2008b). Being first published online in 2005, SOCR Analyses is a somewhat new component and it concentrate on data modeling for both parametric and non-parametric data analyses with graphical model diagnostics. One of the main purposes of SOCR Analyses is to facilitate statistical learning for high school and undergraduate students. As we have already implemented SOCR Distributions and Experiments, SOCR Analyses and Charts fulfill the rest of a standard statistics curricula. Currently, there are four core components of SOCR Analyses. Linear models included in SOCR Analyses are simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, one-way and two-way ANOVA. Tests for sample comparisons include t-test in the parametric category. Some examples of SOCR Analyses' in the non-parametric category are Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Friedman's test, Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test and Fligner-Killeen test. Hypothesis testing models include contingency table, Friedman's test and Fisher's exact test. The last component of Analyses is a utility for computing sample sizes for normal distribution. In this article, we present the design framework, computational implementation and the utilization of SOCR Analyses.
