    Introducing the STAMP method in road tunnel safety assessment

    After the tremendous accidents in European road tunnels over the past decade, many risk assessment methods have been proposed worldwide, most of them based on Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA). Although QRAs are helpful to address physical aspects and facilities of tunnels, current approaches in the road tunnel field have limitations to model organizational aspects, software behavior and the adaptation of the tunnel system over time. This paper reviews the aforementioned limitations and highlights the need to enhance the safety assessment process of these critical infrastructures with a complementary approach that links the organizational factors to the operational and technical issues, analyze software behavior and models the dynamics of the tunnel system. To achieve this objective, this paper examines the scope for introducing a safety assessment method which is based on the systems thinking paradigm and draws upon the STAMP model. The method proposed is demonstrated through a case study of a tunnel ventilation system and the results show that it has the potential to identify scenarios that encompass both the technical system and the organizational structure. However, since the method does not provide quantitative estimations of risk, it is recommended to be used as a complementary approach to the traditional risk assessments rather than as an alternative.     In-plant logistics systems modeling with SysML

    Up till now Systems Modeling Language (SysML) has mostly been used to model physical systems of interest. This paper shows how SysML can also be used to represent an abstract model. In this application a mathematical cost model is represented using the SysML plugin for the software MagicDraw. ParaMagic, a plugin in MagicDraw supplementary to SysML, links to Mathematica to solve the model. SysML is a formal language and offers a very intuitive graphical representation. It is therefore a useful medium to create a domain specific language for a field of knowledge. The comprehensiveness of the language, which makes it possible to incorporate specification, analysis, design, verification, and validation of systems, makes it a very valuable tool for collaboration on large projects

    A proposed psychological model of driving automation

    This paper considers psychological variables pertinent to driver automation. It is anticipated that driving with automated systems is likely to have a major impact on the drivers and a multiplicity of factors needs to be taken into account. A systems analysis of the driver, vehicle and automation served as the basis for eliciting psychological factors. The main variables to be considered were: feed-back, locus of control, mental workload, driver stress, situational awareness and mental representations. It is expected that anticipating the effects on the driver brought about by vehicle automation could lead to improved design strategies. Based on research evidence in the literature, the psychological factors were assembled into a model for further investigation

    Workload modeling using time windows and utilization in an air traffic control task

    In this paper, we show how to assess human workload for continuous tasks and describe how operator performance is affected by variations in break-work intervals and by different utilizations. A study was conducted examining the effects of different break-work intervals and utilization as a factor in a mental workload model. We investigated the impact of operator performance on operational error while performing continuous event-driven air traffic control tasks with multiple aircraft. To this end we have developed a simple air traffic control (ATC) model aimed at distributing breaks to form different configurations with the same utilization. The presented approach extends prior concepts of workload and utilization, which are based on a simple average utilization, and considers the specific patterns of break-work intervals. Teacher certification program is a way to improve the quality of teachers so that the quality of education will be increased dan in turn affect students' achievement (Siedentop & Tannehill, 2000). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the design of decision support systems passing teacher certification so as to facilitate the certification team dan assessors in the decision making sertikasi teacher graduation. In this paper we use a qualitative method based on system development life cycle (SDLC), including planning, analysis, design, dan implementation. Design of decision support systems passing teacher certification can provide information about passing the certification of teachers, as information analysis dan control in teacher certification assessment conducted by the assessor dan teacher certification of graduation information.
