Models and analysis of vocal emissions for biomedical applications
This book of Proceedings collects the papers presented at the 3rd International Workshop on Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions for Biomedical Applications, MAVEBA 2003, held 10-12 December 2003, Firenze, Italy. The workshop is organised every two years, and aims to stimulate contacts between specialists active in research and industrial developments, in the area of voice analysis for biomedical applications. The scope of the Workshop includes all aspects of voice modelling and analysis, ranging from fundamental research to all kinds of biomedical applications and related established and advanced technologies
Collaborative adaptive filtering for machine learning
Quantitative performance criteria for the analysis of machine learning architectures
and algorithms have long been established. However, qualitative performance criteria,
which identify fundamental signal properties and ensure any processing preserves the
desired properties, are still emerging. In many cases, whilst offline statistical tests
exist such as assessment of nonlinearity or stochasticity, online tests which not only
characterise but also track changes in the nature of the signal are lacking. To that end,
by employing recent developments in signal characterisation, criteria are derived for
the assessment of the changes in the nature of the processed signal.
Through the fusion of the outputs of adaptive filters a single collaborative hybrid
filter is produced. By tracking the dynamics of the mixing parameter of this filter,
rather than the actual filter performance, a clear indication as to the current nature of
the signal is given. Implementations of the proposed method show that it is possible to
quantify the degree of nonlinearity within both real- and complex-valued data. This is
then extended (in the real domain) from dealing with nonlinearity in general, to a more
specific example, namely sparsity. Extensions of adaptive filters from the real to the
complex domain are non-trivial and the differences between the statistics in the real
and complex domains need to be taken into account. In terms of signal characteristics,
nonlinearity can be both split- and fully-complex and complex-valued data can be
considered circular or noncircular. Furthermore, by combining the information obtained
from hybrid filters of different natures it is possible to use this method to gain a more
complete understanding of the nature of the nonlinearity within a signal. This also
paves the way for building multidimensional feature spaces and their application in
data/information fusion.
To produce online tests for sparsity, adaptive filters for sparse environments are
investigated and a unifying framework for the derivation of proportionate normalised
least mean square (PNLMS) algorithms is presented. This is then extended to derive
variants with an adaptive step-size. In order to create an online test for noncircularity,
a study of widely linear autoregressive modelling is presented, from which a proof of
the convergence of the test for noncircularity can be given. Applications of this method
are illustrated on examples such as biomedical signals, speech and wind data

Optophone design: optical-to-auditory vision substitution for the blind
An optophone is a device that turns light into sound for the benefit of blind people. The present project is intended to produce a general-purpose optophone to be worn on the head about the house and in the street, to give the wearer a detailed description in sound of the'scene he is facing. The device will therefore consist'of an'electronic camera, some signal-processing electronics, earphones`, and a battery. The two major problems are the derivation of (a) the most suitable mapping from images to sounds, and (b) an algorithm to perform the mapping in real'time on existing electronic components. This thesis concerns problem (a). Chapter 2 goes into the general scene-to-sound mapping problem in some detail'and presents the work of earlier investigators. Chapter 3 1- discusses the design of tests to evaluate the performance of candidate mappings. A theoretical performance test (TPT) is derived. Chapter 4 applies the TPT to the most obvious mapping, the cartesian piano transform. Chapter 5 applies the TPT to a mapping based on the cosine transform. Chapter 6 attempts to derive a mapping by principal component analysis, using the inaccuracies of human sight and hearing and the statistical properties of real scenes and sounds. Chapter 7 presents a complete scheme, implemented in software, for representing digitised colour scenes by audible digitised stereo sound. Chapter 8 tries to decide how'many numbers are required to specify a steady spectrum with no noticeable degradation. Chapter 9 looks'at a scheme designed to produce more natural-sounding sounds related to more meaningful portions of the scene. This scheme maps windows in the scene to steady spectral patterns of short duration, the location of the window being conveyed by simulated free-field listening. Collaborating with the Behaving Machine: simple adaptive dynamical systems for generative and interactive music
Situated at the intersection of interactive computer music and generative art, this thesis is inspired by research in Artificial Life and Autonomous Robotics and applies some of the principles and methods of these fields in a practical music context. As such the project points toward a paradigm for computer music research and performance which comple- ments current mainstream approaches and develops upon existing creative applications of Artificial Life research.
Many artists have adopted engineering techniques from the field of Artificial Life research as they seem to support a richer interactive experience with computers than is often achieved in digital interactive art. Moreover, the low level aspects of life which the research programme aims to model are often evident in these artistic appropriations in the form of bizarre and abstract but curiously familiar digital forms that somehow, despite their silicon make-up, appear to accord with biological convention.
The initial aesthetic motivation for this project was very personal and stemmed from interests in adaptive systems and improvisation and a desire to unite the two. In sim- ple terms, I wanted to invite these synthetic critters up on stage and play with them. There has been some similar research in the musical domain, but this has focused on a very small selection of specific models and techniques which have been predominantly applied as compositional tools rather than for use in live generative music. This thesis considers the advantages of the Alife approach for contemporary computer musicians and offers specific examples of simple adaptive systems as components for both compo- sitional and performance tools.
These models have been implemented in a range of generative and interactive works which are described here. These include generative sound installations, interactive instal- lations and a performance system for collaborative man-machine improvisation. Public response at exhibitions and concerts suggests that the approach taken here holds much promise
