    Model-Driven Service Level Management

    Abstract. Service-level agreements (SLA) definition and monitoring are open issues within the IT Service Management (ITSM) domain. Our main goals are to propose a model-based approach to IT services SLA specification and compliance verification. The specification part will be accomplished by proposing a SLA language -a domain specific language (DSL) for defining quality attributes as non functional requirements (NFRs) in the context of ITSM. Its metamodel will be an extension of the meta-model of an adopted process modeling language for IT services. As such, it will be possible to ground SLA definition on the corresponding IT service model constructs. This will allow that SLA monitoring and compliance validation could occur at a level of abstraction that is understood by all the stakeholders involved in the service specification

    Toward a Formal Semantics for Autonomic Components

    Autonomic management can improve the QoS provided by parallel/ distributed applications. Within the CoreGRID Component Model, the autonomic management is tailored to the automatic - monitoring-driven - alteration of the component assembly and, therefore, is defined as the effect of (distributed) management code. This work yields a semantics based on hypergraph rewriting suitable to model the dynamic evolution and non-functional aspects of Service Oriented Architectures and component-based autonomic applications. In this regard, our main goal is to provide a formal description of adaptation operations that are typically only informally specified. We contend that our approach makes easier to raise the level of abstraction of management code in autonomic and adaptive applications.Comment: 11 pages + cover pag

    Networked systems are increasingly driven by changing business needs, their management becomes even more complex. In order to adapt to changing business requirements, distributed systems switch from the traditional client-server model to a service-driven model: The internet service driven network is a new approach to the provision of network computing that concentrates on the services you want to provide. These services range from the low-level services that manage relationships between networked devices to the value-added services provided to the end-users. The requirements for management systems identified above, can be facilitated with policy-based management approach where the support for distribution, automation and dynamic adaptation of the behaviour of the managed system is achieved by using policies. IPV6 is one of the useful delivery protocols for future fixed and wireless/mobile network environment while multihoming is the tools for delivering such protocol to the end users.     Service Branding: Suggesting and Discussing Four Perspectives Influencing a Value-Creating Service Brand at the Company Level

    The chapter suggests and discusses four interrelated perspectives, which, we argue, influence a value-creating service brand at the company level. One research question is posed: which perspectives are useful and applicable in the development of a value-creating service brand at the company level? Four interrelated perspectives are outlined and discussed: a customer perspective, a management perspective, a service employee perspective, and a knowledge perspective. The discussion section of the chapter includes an interactive, circular model, which shows how the four perspectives directly and indirectly impact on the creation of a value-creating service brand. In the chapter, a set of theoretical and practical implications is drawn. Illustratively, on the theoretical side, one implication is that a high degree of service orientation together with change-oriented, value-driven management orientation is required in order to foster, develop, and sustain a value-creating service brand at the company level. On the practical side, one advice is to upgrade the role of knowledge of an important intangible resource by working in accordance with the principles of a dynamic knowledge system

    A Goal-Oriented Approach for Adaptive SLA Monitoring : a Cloud Provider Case Study

    National audienceWe argue in this paper that autonomic systems need to make their integrated monitoring adaptive in order to improve their “comprehensive” Quality of Service (QoS). We propose to design this adaptation based on high level objectives (called goals) related to the management of both the “functional system QoS” and the “monitoring system QoS”. Starting from some previous works suggesting a model-driven adaptable monitoring framework composed of 3 layers (configurability, adaptability, governability), we introduce a methodology to identify the functional and monitoring high level goals (according to the agreed Service Level Agreement - SLA) in order to drive models' instantiation. This proposal is first applied to a cloud provider case study for which two high level goals are developed (respect metrics freshness and minimize monitoring cost), and then simulated to show how the quality of management decisions, as well as intelligent monitoring of dynamic SLA, could be improved

Model management concerns a set of features allowing representing, creating, storing and manipulating models. Nowadays, the needs of models designers in terms of management process and products are diverse. Modeling tools are not complete because there is no consensus about models needs and uses. To remedy the heterogeneity and the functional limitations of models management tools, we propose a service-oriented approach for model management for the creation of modeling environments adapted to the needs of designers.     Risk-driven proactive fault-tolerant operation of IaaS providers

    In order to improve service execution in Clouds, the management of Cloud Infrastructure has to take measures to adhere to Service Level Agreements and Business Level Objectives, from the application layer through to how services are supported at the lowest hardware levels. In this paper a risk model methodology and holistic management approach is developed specific to the operation of the Cloud Infrastructure Provider and is applied through improvements to SLA fault tolerance in Cloud Infrastructure. Risk assessments are used to analyse execution specific data from the Cloud Infrastructure and linked to a business driven holistic management component that is part of a Cloud Manager. Initial results show improved eco-efficiency, virtual machine availability and reductions in SLA failure across the whole Cloud infrastructure by applying our combined risk-based fault tolerance approach.Postprint (author’s final draft

    Automating SLA-Driven API Development with SLA4OAI

    The OpenAPI Specification (OAS) is the de facto standard to describe RESTful APIs from a functional perspective. OAS has been a success due to its simple model and the wide ecosystem of tools supporting the SLA-Driven API development lifecycle. Unfortunately, the current OAS scope ignores crucial information for an API such as its Service Level Agreement (SLA). Therefore, in terms of description and management of non-functional information, the disadvantages of not having a standard include the vendor lock-in and prevent the ecosystem to grow and handle extra functional aspects. In this paper, we present SLA4OAI, pioneering in extending OAS not only allowing the specification of SLAs, but also supporting some stages of the SLA-Driven API lifecycle with an open-source ecosystem.     5Growth: An end-to-end service platform for automated deployment and management of vertical services over 5G networks

    This article introduces the key innovations of the 5Growth service platform to empower vertical industries with an AI-driven automated 5G end-to-end slicing solution that allows industries to achieve their service requirements. Specifically, we present multiple vertical pilots (Industry 4.0, transportation, and energy), identify the key 5G requirements to enable them, and analyze existing technical and functional gaps as compared to current solutions. Based on the identified gaps, we propose a set of innovations to address them with: (i) support of 3GPP-based RAN slices by introducing a RAN slicing model and providing automated RAN orchestration and control; (ii) an AI-driven closed-loop for automated service management with service level agreement assurance; and (iii) multi-domain solutions to expand service offerings by aggregating services and resources from different provider domains and also enable the integration of private 5G networks with public networks.This work has been partially supported by EC H2020 5GPPP 5Growth project (Grant 856709)

    Self-adaptive distributed management of QoS and SLSs in multiservice networks

    Apresentação efectuada na International Conference on Integrated Management (IM 2005), Nice, France, May 2005.Distributed service-oriented traffic control mechanisms, operating with minimum impact on network performance, assume a crucial role as regards controlling services quality and network resources transparent and efficiently. In this way, we describe and specify a lightweight distributed admission control (AC) model which provides an uniform solution for managing QoS and SLSs in multiclass and multidomain environments. Taking advantage of the consensual need of on-line service monitoring and traffic control at the network edges, AC decisions are driven by feedback from systematic edge-to-edge measurements of relevant QoS parameters for each service type and SLS utilization. This allows self-adaptive service and resource management, while abstracting from network core complexity and heterogeneity. In this paper, introducing an expressive notation, we specify the high-level entities for multiservice provisioning in a domain and formalize service-dependent AC equations to assure both intra and interdomain model operation. A proof-of-concept of the AC criteria effectiveness in satisfying each service class commitments while achieving high network utilization is provided through simulation
