Demand response within the energy-for-water-nexus - A review. ESRI WP637, October 2019
A promising tool to achieve more flexibility within power systems is demand re-sponse (DR). End-users in many strands
of industry have been subject to research up to now regarding the opportunities for implementing DR programmes. One sector
that has received little attention from the literature so far, is wastewater treatment. However, case studies indicate that the
potential for wastewater treatment plants to provide DR services might be significant. This review presents and categorises recent
modelling approaches for industrial demand response as well as for the wastewater treatment plant operation. Furthermore, the
main sources of flexibility from wastewater treatment plants are presented: a potential for variable electricity use in aeration, the
time-shifting operation of pumps, the exploitation of built-in redundan-cy in the system and flexibility in the sludge processing.
Although case studies con-note the potential for DR from individual WWTPs, no study acknowledges the en-dogeneity of energy
prices which arises from a large-scale utilisation of DR. There-fore, an integrated energy systems approach is required to quantify
system and market effects effectively
Big Data and the Internet of Things
Advances in sensing and computing capabilities are making it possible to
embed increasing computing power in small devices. This has enabled the sensing
devices not just to passively capture data at very high resolution but also to
take sophisticated actions in response. Combined with advances in
communication, this is resulting in an ecosystem of highly interconnected
devices referred to as the Internet of Things - IoT. In conjunction, the
advances in machine learning have allowed building models on this ever
increasing amounts of data. Consequently, devices all the way from heavy assets
such as aircraft engines to wearables such as health monitors can all now not
only generate massive amounts of data but can draw back on aggregate analytics
to "improve" their performance over time. Big data analytics has been
identified as a key enabler for the IoT. In this chapter, we discuss various
avenues of the IoT where big data analytics either is already making a
significant impact or is on the cusp of doing so. We also discuss social

Solar Thermal Plants Integration in Smart Grids
Solar energy penetration has been increasingly growing in recent years. Since solar
energy is intermittent its integration in existing grids is difficult. This paper deals with the
optimal integration of solar power plants in grids. The paper proposes a modification of
energy hubs which allows to solve the optimization problem with a mixed integer programming

Enhancing the efficiency of electricity utilization through home energy management systems within the smart grid framework
The concept behind smart grids is the aggregation of “intelligence” into the grid, whether through communication systems technologies that allow broadcast/data reception in real-time, or through monitoring and systems control in an autonomous way. With respect to the technological advancements, in recent years there has been a significant increment in devices and new strategies for the implementation of smart buildings/homes, due to the growing awareness of society in relation to environmental concerns and higher energy costs, so that energy efficiency improvements can provide real gains within modern society. In this perspective, the end-users are seen as active players with the ability to manage their energy resources, for example, microproduction units, domestic loads, electric vehicles and their participation in demand response events. This thesis is focused on identifying application areas where such technologies could bring benefits for their applicability, such as the case of wireless networks, considering the positive and negative points of each protocol available in the market. Moreover, this thesis provides an evaluation of dynamic prices of electricity and peak power, using as an example a system with electric vehicles and energy storage, supported by mixed-integer linear programming, within residential energy management. This thesis will also develop a power measuring prototype designed to process and determine the main electrical measurements and quantify the electrical load connected to a low voltage alternating current system. Finally, two cases studies are proposed regarding the application of model predictive control and thermal regulation for domestic applications with cooling requirements, allowing to minimize energy consumption, considering the restrictions of demand, load and acclimatization in the system
Virtual Power Plant for Residential Demand Response
This report presents the progress done in the first 1.5 years in relation to the PhD project “Virtual Power Plant for Residential Demand Response”. The PhD project aims to gain insight on demand response provision in residential buildings by using a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in a smart grid scenario. The document shows an architectural overview of the designed VPP and a prototype of the latter based on industrial automation equipment. Furthermore, the report introduces the control strategy of the VPP. This strategy is based on a model predictive control approach to locally optimize energy resources and to provide demand response to an aggregator. In addition, an initial study on prediction models for electricity consumption of residential buildings is presented. Load forecasting models like the ones described are used by the intelligence of the VPP for decision making. The report concludes by outlining the future work together with the planed publications that will lead to timely completion of the PhD study
