A Prototype Toolkit For Evaluating Indoor Environmental Quality In Commercial Buildings
Measurement of building environmental parameters is often complex, expensive, and not easily proceduralized in a manner that covers all commercial buildings. Evaluating building indoor environmental quality performance is therefore not standard practice. This project developed a prototype toolkit that addressed existing barriers to widespread indoor environmental quality performance evaluation. A toolkit with both hardware and software elements was designed for practitioners around the indoor environmental quality requirements of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers / Chartered Institution of Building Services / United States Green Building Council Performance Measurement Protocols. This unique toolkit was built on a wireless mesh network with a web-based data collection, analysis, and reporting application. The toolkit provided a fast, robust deployment of sensors, real-time data analysis, Performance Measurement Protocol-based analysis methods and a scorecard and report generation tools. A web-enabled Geographic Information System-based metadata collection system also reduced field-study deployment time. The toolkit was evaluated through three case studies, which were discussed in this report
Enhancing Job Scheduling of an Atmospheric Intensive Data Application
Nowadays, e-Science applications involve great deal of data to have more accurate analysis. One of its application domains is the Radio Occultation which manages satellite data. Grid Processing Management is a physical infrastructure geographically distributed based on Grid Computing, that is implemented for the overall processing Radio Occultation analysis. After a brief description of algorithms adopted to characterize atmospheric profiles, the paper presents an improvement of job scheduling in order to decrease processing time and optimize resource utilization. Extension of grid computing capacity is implemented by virtual machines in existing physical Grid in order to satisfy temporary job requests. Also scheduling plays an important role in the infrastructure that is handled by a couple of schedulers which are developed to manage data automaticall
Definition, technology readiness, and development cost of the orbit transfer vehicle engine integrated control and health monitoring system elements
An Integrated Control and Health Monitoring (ICHM) system was conceived for use on a 20 Klb thrust baseline Orbit Transfer Vehicle (OTV) engine. Considered for space used, the ICHM was defined for reusability requirements for an OTV engine service free life of 20 missions, with 100 starts and a total engine operational time of 4 hours. Functions were derived by flowing down requirements from NASA guidelines, previous OTV engine or ICHM documents, and related contracts. The elements of an ICHM were identified and listed, and these elements were described in sufficient detail to allow estimation of their technology readiness levels. These elements were assessed in terms of technology readiness level, and supporting rationale for these assessments presented. The remaining cost for development of a minimal ICHM system to technology readiness level 6 was estimated. The estimates are within an accuracy range of minus/plus 20 percent. The cost estimates cover what is needed to prepare an ICHM system for use on a focussed testbed for an expander cycle engine, excluding support to the actual test firings
The Emerging Internet of Things Marketplace From an Industrial Perspective: A Survey
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a dynamic global information network
consisting of internet-connected objects, such as Radio-frequency
identification (RFIDs), sensors, actuators, as well as other instruments and
smart appliances that are becoming an integral component of the future
internet. Over the last decade, we have seen a large number of the IoT
solutions developed by start-ups, small and medium enterprises, large
corporations, academic research institutes (such as universities), and private
and public research organisations making their way into the market. In this
paper, we survey over one hundred IoT smart solutions in the marketplace and
examine them closely in order to identify the technologies used,
functionalities, and applications. More importantly, we identify the trends,
opportunities and open challenges in the industry-based the IoT solutions.
Based on the application domain, we classify and discuss these solutions under
five different categories: smart wearable, smart home, smart, city, smart
environment, and smart enterprise. This survey is intended to serve as a
guideline and conceptual framework for future research in the IoT and to
motivate and inspire further developments. It also provides a systematic
exploration of existing research and suggests a number of potentially
significant research directions.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing 201
Building the Evryscope: Hardware Design and Performance
The Evryscope is a telescope array designed to open a new parameter space in
optical astronomy, detecting short timescale events across extremely large sky
areas simultaneously. The system consists of a 780 MPix 22-camera array with an
8150 sq. deg. field of view, 13" per pixel sampling, and the ability to detect
objects down to Mg=16 in each 2 minute dark-sky exposure. The Evryscope,
covering 18,400 sq.deg. with hours of high-cadence exposure time each night, is
designed to find the rare events that require all-sky monitoring, including
transiting exoplanets around exotic stars like white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs,
stellar activity of all types within our galaxy, nearby supernovae, and other
transient events such as gamma ray bursts and gravitational-wave
electromagnetic counterparts. The system averages 5000 images per night with
~300,000 sources per image, and to date has taken over 3.0M images, totaling
250TB of raw data. The resulting light curve database has light curves for 9.3M
targets, averaging 32,600 epochs per target through 2018. This paper summarizes
the hardware and performance of the Evryscope, including the lessons learned
during telescope design, electronics design, a procedure for the precision
polar alignment of mounts for Evryscope-like systems, robotic control and
operations, and safety and performance-optimization systems. We measure the
on-sky performance of the Evryscope, discuss its data-analysis pipelines, and
present some example variable star and eclipsing binary discoveries from the
telescope. We also discuss new discoveries of very rare objects including 2 hot
subdwarf eclipsing binaries with late M-dwarf secondaries (HW Vir systems), 2
white dwarf / hot subdwarf short-period binaries, and 4 hot subdwarf reflection
binaries. We conclude with the status of our transit surveys, M-dwarf flare
survey, and transient detection.Comment: 24 pages, 24 figures, accepted PAS
Orbit transfer rocket engine integrated control and health monitoring system technology readiness assessment
The objectives of this task were to: (1) estimate the technology readiness of an integrated control and health monitoring (ICHM) system for the Aerojet 7500 lbF Orbit Transfer Vehicle engine preliminary design assuming space based operations; and (2) estimate the remaining cost to advance this technology to a NASA defined 'readiness level 6' by 1996 wherein the technology has been demonstrated with a system validation model in a simulated environment. The work was accomplished through the conduct of four subtasks. In subtask 1 the minimally required functions for the control and monitoring system was specified. The elements required to perform these functions were specified in Subtask 2. In Subtask 3, the technology readiness level of each element was assessed. Finally, in Subtask 4, the development cost and schedule requirements were estimated for bringing each element to 'readiness level 6'
