Mobile Learning Revolution: Implications for Language Pedagogy
Mobile technologies including cell phones and tablets are a pervasive feature of everyday life with potential impact on teaching and learning. âMobile pedagogyâ may seem like a contradiction in terms, since mobile learning often takes place physically beyond the teacher's reach, outside the walls of the classroom. While pedagogy implies careful planning, mobility exposes learners to the unexpected. A thoughtful pedagogical response to this reality involves new conceptualizations of what is to be learned and new activity designs. This approach recognizes that learners may act in more self-determined ways beyond the classroom walls, where online interactions and mobile encounters influence their target language communication needs and interests. The chapter sets out a range of opportunities for out-of-class mobile language learning that give learners an active role and promote communication. It then considers the implications of these developments for language content and curricula and the evolving roles and competences of teachers

How Push-To-Talk Makes Talk Less Pushy
This paper presents an exploratory study of college-age students using
two-way, push-to-talk cellular radios. We describe the observed and reported
use of cellular radio by the participants. We discuss how the half-duplex,
lightweight cellular radio communication was associated with reduced
interactional commitment, which meant the cellular radios could be used for a
wide range of conversation styles. One such style, intermittent conversation,
is characterized by response delays. Intermittent conversation is surprising in
an audio medium, since it is typically associated with textual media such as
instant messaging. We present design implications of our findings.Comment: 10 page
Establishing user requirements for a mobile learning environment
This paper presents the rationale, challenges, successes and results of activities to establish the requirements for a mobile learning environment. The effort is part of a European-funded research and development project investigating context-sensitive approaches to informal, problem-based and workplace learning by using key advances in mobile technologies. Smartphone apps usage patterns as a predictor of perceived stress levels at workplace
Explosion of number of smartphone apps and their diversity has created a
fertile ground to study behaviour of smartphone users. Patterns of app usage,
specifically types of apps and their duration are influenced by the state of
the user and this information can be correlated with the self-reported state of
the users. The work in this paper is along the line of understanding patterns
of app usage and investigating relationship of these patterns with the
perceived stress level within the workplace context. Our results show that
using a subject-centric behaviour model we can predict stress levels based on
smartphone app usage. The results we have achieved, of average accuracy of 75%
and precision of 85.7%, can be used as an indicator of overall stress levels in
work environments and in turn inform stress reduction organisational policies,
especially when considering interrelation between stress and productivity of
workers

Continue to build the digital literacy skills of all populations, because digital literacy strongly influences usersâ ability to engage safely online â this is best achieved by a hands-on learning approach
Keep risk in perspective â the risks and benefits of digital participation go hand in hand
Broaden the focus from awareness-raising to long-term behaviour change.
As digital technologies become further integrated into the everyday lives of Australians, users are potentially exposed to greater risks. However, the risks and benefits of digital participation go hand in hand. The challenge, therefore, is to support users to minimise the risks without limiting their digital participation and their capacity to derive the full benefits of connectivity. If Australians are to benefit as either consumers or providers of online services and products in the e-commerce environment, consumer safety and trust need to be improved.
Cyber safety needs to be considered against a transforming backdrop of technology trends, products and practices. While the rise of social media has tended to dominate recent debate and developments in cyber safety, particularly in relation to young people, a range of other trends is also shaping how users engage online, the risks they potentially face in the new media landscape, and the strategies used to address them. These trends include the rise of user generated content and content sharing platforms; the uptake of mobile technologies and, in particular, the adoption of smartphones; cloud computing; platform integration and single sign-on mechanisms; and the rise of GPS and location based services
How to promote informal learning in the workplace? The need for incremental design methods
Informal Learning in the Workplace (ILW) is ensured by the everyday work
activities in which workers are engaged. It accounts for over 75 per cent of
learning in the workplace. Enterprise Social Media (ESM) are increasingly used
as informal learning environments. According to the results of an
implementation we have conducted in real context, we show that ESM are
appropriate to promote ILW. Nevertheless, social aspects must be reconsidered
to address users' needs regarding content and access, quality information
indicators, moderation and control
Trade reforms and wage inequality in Colombia
We investigate the effects of the drastic tariff reductions of the 1980s and 1990s in Colombia on
the wage distribution. We identify three main channels through which the wage distribution was
affected: increasing returns to college education, changes in industry wages that hurt sectors with
initially lower wages and a higher fraction of unskilled workers, and shifts of the labor force
towards the informal sector that typically pays lower wages and offers no benefits. Our results
suggest that trade policy played a role in each of the above cases. The increase in the skill
premium was primarily driven by skilled-biased technological change; however, our evidence
suggests, that this change may have been in part motivated by the tariff reductions and the
increased foreign competition to which the trade reform exposed domestic producers. With
respect to industry wages, we find that wage premiums decreased by more in sectors that
experienced larger tariff cuts. Finally, we find some evidence that the increase in the size of the
informal sector is related to increased foreign competition â sectors with larger tariff cuts and
more trade exposure, as measured by the size their imports, experience a greater increase in
informality, though this effect is concentrated in the years prior to the labor market reform.
Nevertheless, increasing returns to education, and changes in industry premiums and informality
alone cannot fully explain the increase in wage inequality we observe over this period. This
suggests that overall the effect of the trade reforms on the wage distribution may have been
small
