    Mixed Critical Earliest Deadline First

    International audienceUsing the advances of the modern microelectronics technology, the safety-critical systems, such as avionics, can reduce their costs by integrating multiple tasks on one device. This makes such systems essentially mixed-critical, as this brings together different tasks whose safety assurance requirements may differ significantly. In the context of mixed-critical scheduling theory, we studied the dual criticality problem of scheduling a finite set of hard real-time jobs. In this work we propose an algorithm which is proved to dominate OCBP, a state-of-the art algorithm for this problem that is optimal over fixed job priority algorithms. We show through empirical studies that our algorithm can reduce the set of non-schedulable instances by a factor of two or, under certain assumptions, by a factor of four, when compared to OCBP

    Task Migration for Fault-Tolerance in Mixed-Criticality Embedded Systems

    In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embed-ded applications implemented on distributed architectures. Depending on their time-criticality, tasks can be hard or soft real-time and regarding safety-criticality, tasks can be fault-tolerant to transient faults, permanent faults, or have no dependability requirements. We use Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling for the hard tasks and the Constant Bandwidth Server (CBS) for the soft tasks. The CBS pa-rameters determine the quality of service (QoS) of soft tasks. Transient faults are tolerated using checkpointing with roll-back recovery. For tolerating permanent faults in proces-sors, we use task migration, i.e., restarting the safety-critical tasks on other processors. We propose a Greedy-based on-line heuristic for the migration of safety-critical tasks, in response to permanent faults, and the adjustment of CBS parameters on the target processors, such that the faults are tolerated, the deadlines for the hard real-time tasks are sat-isfied and the QoS for soft tasks is maximized. The proposed online adaptive approach has been evaluated using several synthetic benchmarks and a real-life case study. 1

    Scheduling policies and system software architectures for mixed-criticality computing

    Mixed-criticality model of computation is being increasingly adopted in timing-sensitive systems. The model not only ensures that the most critical tasks in a system never fails, but also aims for better systems resource utilization in normal condition. In this report, we describe the widely used mixed-criticality task model and fixed-priority scheduling algorithms for the model in uniprocessors. Because of the necessity by the mixed-criticality task model and scheduling policies, isolation, both temporal and spatial, among tasks is one of the main requirements from the system design point of view. Different virtualization techniques have been used to design system software architecture with the goal of isolation. We discuss such a few system software architectures which are being and can be used for mixed-criticality model of computation

    The stack resource protocol based on real time transactions

    Current hard real time (HRT) kernels have their timely behaviour guaranteed at the cost of a rather restrictive use of the available resources. This makes current HRT scheduling techniques inadequate for use in a multimedia environment where one can profit by a better and more flexible use of the resources. It is shown that one can improve the flexibility and efficiency of real time kernels and a method is proposed for precise quality of service schedulability analysis of the stack resource protocol. This protocol is generalised by introducing real time transactions, which makes its use straightforward and efficient. Transactions can be refined to nested critical sections if the smallest estimation of blocking is desired. The method can be used for hard real time systems in general and for multimedia systems in particular

    Framework for sustainable TVET-Teacher Education Program in Malaysia Public Universities

    Studies had stated that less attention was given to the education aspect, such as teaching and learning in planning for improving the TVET system. Due to the 21st Century context, the current paradigm of teaching for the TVET educators also has been reported to be fatal and need to be shifted. All these disadvantages reported hindering the country from achieving the 5th strategy in the Strategic Plan for Vocational Education Transformation to transform TVET system as a whole. Therefore, this study aims to develop a framework for sustainable TVET Teacher Education program in Malaysia. This study had adopted an Exploratory Sequential Mix-Method design, which involves a semi-structured interview (phase one) and survey method (phase two). Nine experts had involved in phase one chosen by using Purposive Sampling Technique. As in phase two, 118 TVET-TE program lecturers were selected as the survey sample chosen through random sampling method. After data analysis in phase one (thematic analysis) and phase two (Principal Component Analysis), eight domains and 22 elements have been identified for the framework for sustainable TVET-TE program in Malaysia. This framework was identified to embed the elements of 21st Century Education, thus filling the gap in this research. The research findings also indicate that the developed framework was unidimensional and valid for the development and research regarding TVET-TE program in Malaysia. Lastly, it is in the hope that this research can be a guide for the nations in producing a quality TVET teacher in the future
