    Broadcasting Automata and Patterns on Z^2

    The Broadcasting Automata model draws inspiration from a variety of sources such as Ad-Hoc radio networks, cellular automata, neighbourhood se- quences and nature, employing many of the same pattern forming methods that can be seen in the superposition of waves and resonance. Algorithms for broad- casting automata model are in the same vain as those encountered in distributed algorithms using a simple notion of waves, messages passed from automata to au- tomata throughout the topology, to construct computations. The waves generated by activating processes in a digital environment can be used for designing a vari- ety of wave algorithms. In this chapter we aim to study the geometrical shapes of informational waves on integer grid generated in broadcasting automata model as well as their potential use for metric approximation in a discrete space. An explo- ration of the ability to vary the broadcasting radius of each node leads to results of categorisations of digital discs, their form, composition, encodings and gener- ation. Results pertaining to the nodal patterns generated by arbitrary transmission radii on the plane are explored with a connection to broadcasting sequences and ap- proximation of discrete metrics of which results are given for the approximation of astroids, a previously unachievable concave metric, through a novel application of the aggregation of waves via a number of explored functions

    Persistent Localized Broadcasting in VANETs

    We present a communication protocol, called LINGER, for persistent dissemination of delay-tolerant information to vehicular users, within a geographical area of interest. The goal of LINGER is to dispatch and confine information in localized areas of a mobile network with minimal protocol overhead and without requiring knowledge of the vehicles' routes or destinations. LINGER does not require roadside infrastructure support: it selects mobile nodes in a distributed, cooperative way and lets them act as "information bearers", providing uninterrupted information availability within a desired region. We analyze the performance of our dissemination mechanism through extensive simulations, in complex vehicular scenarios with realistic node mobility. The results demonstrate that LINGER represents a viable, appealing alternative to infrastructure-based solutions, as it can successfully drive the information toward a region of interest from a far away source and keep it local with negligible overhead. We show the effectiveness of such an approach in the support of localized broadcasting, in terms of both percentage of informed vehicles and information delivery delay, and we compare its performance to that of a dedicated, state-of-the-art protoco

    Using Foucault's (1977, 1978) notion of panoptic method of governmentality and looking at the case of Singapore's Internet policy, this paper attempts to expand on the idea-and ideals-of 'auto-regulation'(Lee, 2000, pp. 4-5; Lee & Birch, 2000). Auto-regulation, as I shall posit in this paper, provides a way for regulatory enforcement and surveillance to become sufficiently transparent and 'normalised' so that 'the exercise of power may be supervised by society as a whole'(Foucault, 1977, pp.207-208) rather than by a select group of policy and law enforcement officers, or civil society /activist groups

    Quantifying multipartite nonlocality

    The nonlocal correlations of multipartite entangled states can be reproduced by a classical model if sufficiently many parties join together or if sufficiently many parties broadcast their measurement inputs. The maximal number m of groups and the minimal number k of broadcasting parties that allow for the reproduction of a given set of correlations quantify their multipartite nonlocal content. We show how upper-bounds on m and lower-bounds on k can be computed from the violation of the Mermin-Svetlichny inequalities. While n-partite GHZ states violate these inequalities maximally, we find that W states violate them only by a very small amount.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. v2: minor change
