    Min-Rank Conjecture for Log-Depth Circuits

    A completion of an m-by-n matrix A with entries in {0,1,*} is obtained by setting all *-entries to constants 0 or 1. A system of semi-linear equations over GF(2) has the form Mx=f(x), where M is a completion of A and f:{0,1}^n --> {0,1}^m is an operator, the i-th coordinate of which can only depend on variables corresponding to *-entries in the i-th row of A. We conjecture that no such system can have more than 2^{n-c\cdot mr(A)} solutions, where c>0 is an absolute constant and mr(A) is the smallest rank over GF(2) of a completion of A. The conjecture is related to an old problem of proving super-linear lower bounds on the size of log-depth boolean circuits computing linear operators x --> Mx. The conjecture is also a generalization of a classical question about how much larger can non-linear codes be than linear ones.     Sensitivity Conjecture and Log-rank Conjecture for functions with small alternating numbers

    The Sensitivity Conjecture and the Log-rank Conjecture are among the most important and challenging problems in concrete complexity. Incidentally, the Sensitivity Conjecture is known to hold for monotone functions, and so is the Log-rank Conjecture for f(xy)f(x \wedge y) and f(xy)f(x\oplus y) with monotone functions ff, where \wedge and \oplus are bit-wise AND and XOR, respectively. In this paper, we extend these results to functions ff which alternate values for a relatively small number of times on any monotone path from 0n0^n to 1n1^n. These deepen our understandings of the two conjectures, and contribute to the recent line of research on functions with small alternating numbers

    The Minrank of Random Graphs

    The minrank of a graph GG is the minimum rank of a matrix MM that can be obtained from the adjacency matrix of GG by switching some ones to zeros (i.e., deleting edges) and then setting all diagonal entries to one. This quantity is closely related to the fundamental information-theoretic problems of (linear) index coding (Bar-Yossef et al., FOCS'06), network coding and distributed storage, and to Valiant's approach for proving superlinear circuit lower bounds (Valiant, Boolean Function Complexity '92). We prove tight bounds on the minrank of random Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi graphs G(n,p)G(n,p) for all regimes of p[0,1]p\in[0,1]. In particular, for any constant pp, we show that minrk(G)=Θ(n/logn)\mathsf{minrk}(G) = \Theta(n/\log n) with high probability, where GG is chosen from G(n,p)G(n,p). This bound gives a near quadratic improvement over the previous best lower bound of Ω(n)\Omega(\sqrt{n}) (Haviv and Langberg, ISIT'12), and partially settles an open problem raised by Lubetzky and Stav (FOCS '07). Our lower bound matches the well-known upper bound obtained by the "clique covering" solution, and settles the linear index coding problem for random graphs. Finally, our result suggests a new avenue of attack, via derandomization, on Valiant's approach for proving superlinear lower bounds for logarithmic-depth semilinear circuits

    Static Data Structure Lower Bounds Imply Rigidity

    We show that static data structure lower bounds in the group (linear) model imply semi-explicit lower bounds on matrix rigidity. In particular, we prove that an explicit lower bound of tω(log2n)t \geq \omega(\log^2 n) on the cell-probe complexity of linear data structures in the group model, even against arbitrarily small linear space (s=(1+ε)n)(s= (1+\varepsilon)n), would already imply a semi-explicit (PNP\bf P^{NP}\rm) construction of rigid matrices with significantly better parameters than the current state of art (Alon, Panigrahy and Yekhanin, 2009). Our results further assert that polynomial (tnδt\geq n^{\delta}) data structure lower bounds against near-optimal space, would imply super-linear circuit lower bounds for log-depth linear circuits (a four-decade open question). In the succinct space regime (s=n+o(n))(s=n+o(n)), we show that any improvement on current cell-probe lower bounds in the linear model would also imply new rigidity bounds. Our results rely on a new connection between the "inner" and "outer" dimensions of a matrix (Paturi and Pudlak, 2006), and on a new reduction from worst-case to average-case rigidity, which is of independent interest

    Good approximate quantum LDPC codes from spacetime circuit Hamiltonians

    We study approximate quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes, which are approximate quantum error-correcting codes specified as the ground space of a frustration-free local Hamiltonian, whose terms do not necessarily commute. Such codes generalize stabilizer QLDPC codes, which are exact quantum error-correcting codes with sparse, low-weight stabilizer generators (i.e. each stabilizer generator acts on a few qubits, and each qubit participates in a few stabilizer generators). Our investigation is motivated by an important question in Hamiltonian complexity and quantum coding theory: do stabilizer QLDPC codes with constant rate, linear distance, and constant-weight stabilizers exist? We show that obtaining such optimal scaling of parameters (modulo polylogarithmic corrections) is possible if we go beyond stabilizer codes: we prove the existence of a family of [[N,k,d,ε]][[N,k,d,\varepsilon]] approximate QLDPC codes that encode k=Ω~(N)k = \widetilde{\Omega}(N) logical qubits into NN physical qubits with distance d=Ω~(N)d = \widetilde{\Omega}(N) and approximation infidelity ε=O(1/polylog(N))\varepsilon = \mathcal{O}(1/\textrm{polylog}(N)). The code space is stabilized by a set of 10-local noncommuting projectors, with each physical qubit only participating in O(polylogN)\mathcal{O}(\textrm{polylog} N) projectors. We prove the existence of an efficient encoding map, and we show that arbitrary Pauli errors can be locally detected by circuits of polylogarithmic depth. Finally, we show that the spectral gap of the code Hamiltonian is Ω~(N3.09)\widetilde{\Omega}(N^{-3.09}) by analyzing a spacetime circuit-to-Hamiltonian construction for a bitonic sorting network architecture that is spatially local in polylog(N)\textrm{polylog}(N) dimensions.Comment: 51 pages, 13 figure

    Algebraic Independence and Blackbox Identity Testing

    Algebraic independence is an advanced notion in commutative algebra that generalizes independence of linear polynomials to higher degree. Polynomials {f_1, ..., f_m} \subset \F[x_1, ..., x_n] are called algebraically independent if there is no non-zero polynomial F such that F(f_1, ..., f_m) = 0. The transcendence degree, trdeg{f_1, ..., f_m}, is the maximal number r of algebraically independent polynomials in the set. In this paper we design blackbox and efficient linear maps \phi that reduce the number of variables from n to r but maintain trdeg{\phi(f_i)}_i = r, assuming f_i's sparse and small r. We apply these fundamental maps to solve several cases of blackbox identity testing: (1) Given a polynomial-degree circuit C and sparse polynomials f_1, ..., f_m with trdeg r, we can test blackbox D := C(f_1, ..., f_m) for zeroness in poly(size(D))^r time. (2) Define a spsp_\delta(k,s,n) circuit C to be of the form \sum_{i=1}^k \prod_{j=1}^s f_{i,j}, where f_{i,j} are sparse n-variate polynomials of degree at most \delta. For k = 2 we give a poly(sn\delta)^{\delta^2} time blackbox identity test. (3) For a general depth-4 circuit we define a notion of rank. Assuming there is a rank bound R for minimal simple spsp_\delta(k,s,n) identities, we give a poly(snR\delta)^{Rk\delta^2} time blackbox identity test for spsp_\delta(k,s,n) circuits. This partially generalizes the state of the art of depth-3 to depth-4 circuits.
