    Variation of word frequencies across genre classification tasks

    This paper examines automated genre classification of text documents and its role in enabling the effective management of digital documents by digital libraries and other repositories. Genre classification, which narrows down the possible structure of a document, is a valuable step in realising the general automatic extraction of semantic metadata essential to the efficient management and use of digital objects. In the present report, we present an analysis of word frequencies in different genre classes in an effort to understand the distinction between independent classification tasks. In particular, we examine automated experiments on thirty-one genre classes to determine the relationship between the word frequency metrics and the degree of its significance in carrying out classification in varying environments

    Learning to Extract Keyphrases from Text

    Many academic journals ask their authors to provide a list of about five to fifteen key words, to appear on the first page of each article. Since these key words are often phrases of two or more words, we prefer to call them keyphrases. There is a surprisingly wide variety of tasks for which keyphrases are useful, as we discuss in this paper. Recent commercial software, such as Microsoft?s Word 97 and Verity?s Search 97, includes algorithms that automatically extract keyphrases from documents. In this paper, we approach the problem of automatically extracting keyphrases from text as a supervised learning task. We treat a document as a set of phrases, which the learning algorithm must learn to classify as positive or negative examples of keyphrases. Our first set of experiments applies the C4.5 decision tree induction algorithm to this learning task. The second set of experiments applies the GenEx algorithm to the task. We developed the GenEx algorithm specifically for this task. The third set of experiments examines the performance of GenEx on the task of metadata generation, relative to the performance of Microsoft?s Word 97. The fourth and final set of experiments investigates the performance of GenEx on the task of highlighting, relative to Verity?s Search 97. The experimental results support the claim that a specialized learning algorithm (GenEx) can generate better keyphrases than a general-purpose learning algorithm (C4.5) and the non-learning algorithms that are used in commercial software (Word 97 and Search 97)

    A machine learning approach for layout inference in spreadsheets

    Spreadsheet applications are one of the most used tools for content generation and presentation in industry and the Web. In spite of this success, there does not exist a comprehensive approach to automatically extract and reuse the richness of data maintained in this format. The biggest obstacle is the lack of awareness about the structure of the data in spreadsheets, which otherwise could provide the means to automatically understand and extract knowledge from these files. In this paper, we propose a classification approach to discover the layout of tables in spreadsheets. Therefore, we focus on the cell level, considering a wide range of features not covered before by related work. We evaluated the performance of our classifiers on a large dataset covering three different corpora from various domains. Finally, our work includes a novel technique for detecting and repairing incorrectly classified cells in a post-processing step. The experimental results show that our approach deliver s very high accuracy bringing us a crucial step closer towards automatic table extraction.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Applying digital content management to support localisation

    The retrieval and presentation of digital content such as that on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a substantial area of research. While recent years have seen huge expansion in the size of web-based archives that can be searched efficiently by commercial search engines, the presentation of potentially relevant content is still limited to ranked document lists represented by simple text snippets or image keyframe surrogates. There is expanding interest in techniques to personalise the presentation of content to improve the richness and effectiveness of the user experience. One of the most significant challenges to achieving this is the increasingly multilingual nature of this data, and the need to provide suitably localised responses to users based on this content. The Digital Content Management (DCM) track of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is seeking to develop technologies to support advanced personalised access and presentation of information by combining elements from the existing research areas of Adaptive Hypermedia and Information Retrieval. The combination of these technologies is intended to produce significant improvements in the way users access information. We review key features of these technologies and introduce early ideas for how these technologies can support localisation and localised content before concluding with some impressions of future directions in DCM

    YouTube AV 50K: An Annotated Corpus for Comments in Autonomous Vehicles

    With one billion monthly viewers, and millions of users discussing and sharing opinions, comments below YouTube videos are rich sources of data for opinion mining and sentiment analysis. We introduce the YouTube AV 50K dataset, a freely-available collections of more than 50,000 YouTube comments and metadata below autonomous vehicle (AV)-related videos. We describe its creation process, its content and data format, and discuss its possible usages. Especially, we do a case study of the first self-driving car fatality to evaluate the dataset, and show how we can use this dataset to better understand public attitudes toward self-driving cars and public reactions to the accident.     A new web interface to facilitate access to corpora: development of the ASLLRP data access interface

    A significant obstacle to broad utilization of corpora is the difficulty in gaining access to the specific subsets of data and annotations that may be relevant for particular types of research. With that in mind, we have developed a web-based Data Access Interface (DAI), to provide access to the expanding datasets of the American Sign Language Linguistic Research Project (ASLLRP). The DAI facilitates browsing the corpora, viewing videos and annotations, searching for phenomena of interest, and downloading selected materials from the website. The web interface, compared to providing videos and annotation files off-line, also greatly increases access by people that have no prior experience in working with linguistic annotation tools, and it opens the door to integrating the data with third-party applications on the desktop and in the mobile space. In this paper we give an overview of the available videos, annotations, and search functionality of the DAI, as well as plans for future enhancements. We also summarize best practices and key lessons learned that are crucial to the success of similar projects
