Variable Ranges in Linear Constraints
We introduce an extension of linear constraints, called linearrange constraints, which allows for (meta-)reasoning about the approximation width of variables. Semantics for linearrange constraints is provided in terms of parameterized linear systems. We devise procedures for checking satisfiability and for entailing the maximal width of a variable. An extension of the constraint logic programming language CLP(R) is proposed by admitting linear-range constraints
Declarative Reasoning on Explanations Using Constraint Logic Programming
Explaining opaque Machine Learning (ML) models is an increasingly relevant
problem. Current explanation in AI (XAI) methods suffer several shortcomings,
among others an insufficient incorporation of background knowledge, and a lack
of abstraction and interactivity with the user. We propose REASONX, an
explanation method based on Constraint Logic Programming (CLP). REASONX can
provide declarative, interactive explanations for decision trees, which can be
the ML models under analysis or global/local surrogate models of any black-box
model. Users can express background or common sense knowledge using linear
constraints and MILP optimization over features of factual and contrastive
instances, and interact with the answer constraints at different levels of
abstraction through constraint projection. We present here the architecture of
REASONX, which consists of a Python layer, closer to the user, and a CLP layer.
REASONX's core execution engine is a Prolog meta-program with declarative
semantics in terms of logic theories.Comment: European Conference on Logics in Artificial Intelligence (JELIA 2023
CHR as grammar formalism. A first report
Grammars written as Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) can be executed as
efficient and robust bottom-up parsers that provide a straightforward,
non-backtracking treatment of ambiguity. Abduction with integrity constraints
as well as other dynamic hypothesis generation techniques fit naturally into
such grammars and are exemplified for anaphora resolution, coordination and
text interpretation.Comment: 12 pages. Presented at ERCIM Workshop on Constraints, Prague, Czech

Logic Programming Approaches for Representing and Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems: A Comparison
Many logic programming based approaches can be used to describe and solve
combinatorial search problems. On the one hand there is constraint logic
programming which computes a solution as an answer substitution to a query
containing the variables of the constraint satisfaction problem. On the other
hand there are systems based on stable model semantics, abductive systems, and
first order logic model generators which compute solutions as models of some
theory. This paper compares these different approaches from the point of view
of knowledge representation (how declarative are the programs) and from the
point of view of performance (how good are they at solving typical problems).Comment: 15 pages, 3 eps-figure
Metamodel Instance Generation: A systematic literature review
Modelling and thus metamodelling have become increasingly important in
Software Engineering through the use of Model Driven Engineering. In this paper
we present a systematic literature review of instance generation techniques for
metamodels, i.e. the process of automatically generating models from a given
metamodel. We start by presenting a set of research questions that our review
is intended to answer. We then identify the main topics that are related to
metamodel instance generation techniques, and use these to initiate our
literature search. This search resulted in the identification of 34 key papers
in the area, and each of these is reviewed here and discussed in detail. The
outcome is that we are able to identify a knowledge gap in this field, and we
offer suggestions as to some potential directions for future research.Comment: 25 page
Nominal Logic Programming
Nominal logic is an extension of first-order logic which provides a simple
foundation for formalizing and reasoning about abstract syntax modulo
consistent renaming of bound names (that is, alpha-equivalence). This article
investigates logic programming based on nominal logic. We describe some typical
nominal logic programs, and develop the model-theoretic, proof-theoretic, and
operational semantics of such programs. Besides being of interest for ensuring
the correct behavior of implementations, these results provide a rigorous
foundation for techniques for analysis and reasoning about nominal logic
programs, as we illustrate via examples.Comment: 46 pages; 19 page appendix; 13 figures. Revised journal submission as
