Adaptive non-uniform mutation based on statistics for genetic algorithms

    Get PDF
Copyright @ 2002 ACMAs a meta-heuristic search algorithm based on mechanisms abstracted from population genetics, the genetic algorithm (GA) implicitly maintains the statistics about the search space through the population. This implicit statistics can be explicitly used to enhance GA's performance. In this paper, a statistics-based adaptive non-uniform mutation (SANUM) is proposed. SANUM uses the statistics information of the allele distribution in each locus to adatively adjust the mutation operation. Our preliminary experiments show that SANUM outperforms traditional bit flip mutation across a representative set set of test problems

Structure Selection of Polynomial NARX Models using Two Dimensional (2D) Particle Swarms

The present study applies a novel two-dimensional learning framework (2D-UPSO) based on particle swarms for structure selection of polynomial nonlinear auto-regressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) models. This learning approach explicitly incorporates the information about the cardinality (i.e., the number of terms) into the structure selection process. Initially, the effectiveness of the proposed approach was compared against the classical genetic algorithm (GA) based approach and it was demonstrated that the 2D-UPSO is superior. Further, since the performance of any meta-heuristic search algorithm is critically dependent on the choice of the fitness function, the efficacy of the proposed approach was investigated using two distinct information theoretic criteria such as Akaike and Bayesian information criterion. The robustness of this approach against various levels of measurement noise is also studied. Simulation results on various nonlinear systems demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could accurately determine the structure of the polynomial NARX model even under the influence of measurement noise

Network Topology and Time Criticality Effects in the Modularised Fleet Mix Problem

    Get PDF
In this paper, we explore the interplay between network topology and time criticality in a military logistics system. A general goal of this work (and previous work) is to evaluate land transportation requirements or, more specifically, how to design appropriate fleets of military general service vehicles that are tasked with the supply and re-supply of military units dispersed in an area of operation. The particular focus of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how the logistics environment changes when current Army vehicles with fixed transport characteristics are replaced by a new generation of modularised vehicles that can be configured task-specifically. The experimental work is conducted within a well developed strategic planning simulation environment which includes a scenario generation engine for automatically sampling supply and re-supply missions and a multi-objective meta-heuristic search algorithm (i.e. Evolutionary Algorithm) for solving the particular scheduling and routing problems. The results presented in this paper allow for a better understanding of how (and under what conditions) a modularised vehicle fleet can provide advantages over the currently implemented system

The declining of air quality mostly affects the elderly, children, people with asthma, as well as a restriction on outdoor activities. Therefore, there is an importance to provide a statistical modelling to forecast the future values of surface layer ozone (O3) concentration. The objectives of this study are to obtain the best multivariate time series (MTS) model and develop an online air quality forecasting system for O3 concentration in Malaysia. The implementations of MTS model improve the recent statistical model on air quality for short-term prediction. Ten air quality monitoring stations situated at four (4) different types of location were selected in this study. The first type is industrial represent by Pasir Gudang, Perai, and Nilai, second type is urban represent by Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu, and Alor Setar. The third is suburban located in Banting, Kangar, and Tanjung Malim, also the only background station at Jerantut. The hourly record data from 2010 to 2017 were used to assess the characteristics and behaviour of O3 concentration. Meanwhile, the monthly record data of O3, particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), temperature (T), wind speed (WS), and relative humidity (RH) were used to examine the best MTS models. Three methods of MTS namely vector autoregressive (VAR), vector moving average (VMA), and vector autoregressive moving average (VARMA), has been applied in this study. Based on the performance error, the most appropriate MTS model located in Pasir Gudang, Kota Bharu and Kangar is VAR(1), Kuala Terengganu and Alor Setar for VAR(2), Perai and Nilai for VAR(3), Tanjung Malim for VAR(4) and Banting for VAR(5). Only Jerantut obtained the VMA(2) as the best model. The lowest root mean square error (RMSE) and normalized absolute error is 0.0053 and <0.0001 which is for MTS model in Perai and Kuala Terengganu, respectively. Meanwhile, for mean absolute error (MAE), the lowest is in Banting and Jerantut at 0.0013. The online air quality forecasting system for O3 was successfully developed based on the best MTS models to represent each monitoring station

As this research is guided by a real problem in industry, the flowshop\ud considered has considerable flexibility, which stimulated the development of an\ud innovative methodology for this research. Each stage of the flowshop currently has\ud one or several identical machines. However, the manufacturing company is planning\ud to introduce additional machines with different capabilities in different stages in the\ud near future. Thus, the algorithm proposed and developed for the problem is not only\ud capable of solving the current flow line configuration but also the potential new\ud configurations that may result in the future. A meta-heuristic search algorithm based\ud on Tabu search is developed to solve this NP-hard, industry-guided problem. Six\ud different initial solution finding mechanisms are proposed. A carefully planned\ud nested split-plot design is performed to test the significance of different factors and\ud their impact on the performance of the different algorithms. To the best of our\ud knowledge, this research is the first of its kind that attempts to solve an industry-guided\ud problem with the concern for future developments

Gear Train Design problem is most important design problem for machine tools manufacturers. Recent work on gear train improvement has been bound towards multi-shaft gear trains of the speed-change kind, where major focus is to maximize the range of operating speeds and to minimize the number of gears and spindles. In the proposed research, a hybrid meta-heuristic search algorithm is presented to design and optimize multi-spindle gear trains problem. The objective of the research is to optimize gear trains on the basis of minimum overall centre distance, minimum overall size, minimum gear volume, or other desirable criteria, such as maximum contact or overlap ratios. The proposed hybrid meta-heuristic search algorithm is inspired by canis lupus family of grey wolves and exploitation capability of existing grey wolf optimizer is further enhanced by pattern search algorithm, which is a derivative-free, direct search optimization algorithm suitable for non-differential, discontinuous search space and does not require gradient for numerical optimization problem and have good exploitation capability in local search space. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been tested on various mechanical and civil design problem including gear train design problem, which includes four different gear and experimental results are compared with others recently reported heuristics and meta-heuristics search algorithm. It has been found that the proposed algorithm indorses its effectiveness in the field of nature inspired meta heuristics algorithms for engineering design problems for hybrid electric vehicles

Design Optimization of Semi-Rigidly Connected Steel Frames Using Harmony Search Algorithm

In this paper, a design optimization algorithm is presented for non-linear steel frames with semi-rigid beamcolumnconnections using harmony search algorithm. The design algorithm obtains the minimum steel weight by selecting from a standard set of steel sections. Strength constraints of American Institute of Steel Construction - Load and Resistance Factor Design (AISC-LRFD) specification, displacement, deflection, size constraint and lateral torsional bulking are imposed on frames. Harmony search (HS) is a recently developed meta-heuristic search algorithm which is based on the analogy between the natural musical performance and searching the solutions to optimization problems. The HS algorithm accounts for the effect of connections’ flexibility and the geometric non-linearity of the members. The Frye–Morris polynomial model is used for modeling semi-rigid connections. Two design examples with extended end plate without column stiffeners are presented to demonstrate the application and validity of the algorithm
