    Simultaneous Motion Tracking and Joint Stiffness Control of Bidirectional Antagonistic Variable-Stiffness Actuators

    Since safe human-robot interaction is naturally linked to compliance in these robots, this requirement presents a challenge for the positioning accuracy. The class of variable- stiffness robots features intrinsically soft contact behavior where the physical stiffness can even be altered during operation. Here we present a control scheme for bidirectional, antagonistic variable-stiffness actuators that achieve high-precision link-side trajectory tracking while simultaneously ensuring compliance during physical contact. Furthermore, the approach enables to regulate the pretension in the antagonism. The theoretical claims are confirmed by formal analyses of passivity during physical interaction and the proof of uniform asymptotic stability of the desired link-side trajectories. Experiments on the forearm joint of the DLR robot David verify the proposed approach

    Pneumatic Artificial Muscle Driven Trailing Edge Flaps For Active Rotors

    This research focuses on the development of an active rotor system capable of primary control and vibration reduction for rotorcraft. The objective is to investigate the feasibility of a novel Trailing Edge Flap (TEF) actuation system driven by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles (PAMs). A significant design effort led to a series of experimental apparatuses which tested various aspects of the performance of the actuators themselves and of TEF systems driven by them. Analytical models were developed in parallel to predict the quasistatic and dynamic behavior of these systems. Initial testing of a prototype blade section with an integrated PAM driven TEF proved the viability of the concept through successful benchtop testing under simulated M = 0.3 loading and open jet wind tunnel tests under airspeeds up to M = 0.13. This prototype showed the ability of PAM actuators to generate significant flap deflections over the bandwidth of interest for primary control and vibration reduction on a rotorcraft. It also identified the importance of high pneumatic system mass flow rate for maintaining performance at higher operating frequencies. Research into the development and improvement of PAM actuators centered around a new manufacturing technique which was invented to directly address the weaknesses of previous designs. Detailed finite element model (FEM) analysis of the design allowed for the mitigation of stress concentrations, leading to increased strength. Tensile testing of the swaged actuators showed a factor of safety over 5, and burst pressure testing showed a factor of safety of 3. Over 120,000,000 load cycles were applied to the actuators without failure. Characterization testing before, during, and after the fatigue tests showed no reduction in PAM performance. Wind tunnel testing of a full scale Bell 407 blade retrofitted with a PAM TEF system showed excellent control authority. At the maximum wind tunnel test speed of M = 0.3 and a derated PAM operating pressure of 28 psi, 18.8° half-peak-to-peak flap deflections were achieved at 1/rev (7 Hz), and 17.1° of half-peak-to-peak flap deflection was still available at 5/rev (35 Hz). A quasistatic system model was developed which combined PAM forces, kinematics and flap aerodynamics to predict flap deflection amplitudes. This model agreed well with experimental data. Whirl testing of a sub-span whirl rig under full scale loading conditions showed the ability of PAM TEF systems to operate under full scale levels of centrifugal (CF), aerodynamic, and inertia loading. A commercial pneumatic rotary union was used to provide air in the rotating frame. Extrapolation of the results to 100% of CF acceleration predicts 15.4° of half-peak-to-peak flap deflection at 1/rev (7 Hz), and 7.7° of half-peak-to-peak flap deflection at 5/rev (35 Hz). A dynamic model was developed which successfully predicted the time domain behavior of the PAM actuators and PAM TEF system. This model includes control valve dynamics, frictional tubing losses, pressure dynamics, PAM forces, mechanism kinematics, aerodynamic hinge moments, system stiffness, damping, and inertia to solve for the rotational dynamics of the flap. Control system development led to a closed loop control system for PAM TEF systems capable of tracking complex, multi-sinusoid flap deflections representative of a combined primary control and vibration reduction flap actuation scheme. This research shows the promise that PAM actuators have as drivers for trailing edge flaps on active helicopter rotors. The robustness, ease of integration, control authority and tracking accuracy of these actuators have been established, thereby motivating further research

    Soft Robotics: Design for Simplicity, Performance, and Robustness of Robots for Interaction with Humans.

    This thesis deals with the design possibilities concerning the next generation of advanced Robots. Aim of the work is to study, analyse and realise artificial systems that are essentially simple, performing and robust and can live and coexist with humans. The main design guideline followed in doing so is the Soft Robotics Approach, that implies the design of systems with intrinsic mechanical compliance in their architecture. The first part of the thesis addresses design of new soft robotics actuators, or robotic muscles. At the beginning are provided information about what a robotic muscle is and what is needed to realise it. A possible classification of these systems is analysed and some criteria useful for their comparison are explained. After, a set of functional specifications and parameters is identified and defined, to characterise a specific subset of this kind of actuators, called Variable Stiffness Actuators. The selected parameters converge in a data-sheet that easily defines performance and abilities of the robotic system. A complete strategy for the design and realisation of this kind of system is provided, which takes into account their me- chanical morphology and architecture. As consequence of this, some new actuators are developed, validated and employed in the execution of complex experimental tasks. In particular the actuator VSA-Cube and its add-on, a Variable Damper, are developed as the main com- ponents of a robotics low-cost platform, called VSA-CubeBot, that v can be used as an exploratory platform for multi degrees of freedom experiments. Experimental validations and mathematical models of the system employed in multi degrees of freedom tasks (bimanual as- sembly and drawing on an uneven surface), are reported. The second part of the thesis is about the design of multi fingered hands for robots. In this part of the work the Pisa-IIT SoftHand is introduced. It is a novel robot hand prototype designed with the purpose of being as easily usable, robust and simple as an industrial gripper, while exhibiting a level of grasping versatility and an aspect comparable to that of the human hand. In the thesis the main theo- retical tool used to enable such simplification, i.e. the neuroscience– based notion of soft synergies, are briefly reviewed. The approach proposed rests on ideas coming from underactuated hand design. A synthesis method to realize a desired set of soft synergies through the principled design of adaptive underactuated mechanisms, which is called the method of adaptive synergies, is discussed. This ap- proach leads to the design of hands accommodating in principle an arbitrary number of soft synergies, as demonstrated in grasping and manipulation simulations and experiments with a prototype. As a particular instance of application of the method of adaptive syner- gies, the Pisa–IIT SoftHand is then described in detail. The design and implementation of the prototype hand are shown and its effec- tiveness demonstrated through grasping experiments. Finally, control of the Pisa/IIT Hand is considered. Few different control strategies are adopted, including an experimental setup with the use of surface Electromyographic signals

    Continuum Mechanical Models for Design and Characterization of Soft Robots

    The emergence of ``soft'' robots, whose bodies are made from stretchable materials, has fundamentally changed the way we design and construct robotic systems. Demonstrations and research show that soft robotic systems can be useful in rehabilitation, medical devices, agriculture, manufacturing and home assistance. Increasing need for collaborative, safe robotic devices have combined with technological advances to create a compelling development landscape for soft robots. However, soft robots are not yet present in medical and rehabilitative devices, agriculture, our homes, and many other human-collaborative and human-interactive applications. This gap between promise and practical implementation exists because foundational theories and techniques that exist in rigid robotics have not yet been developed for soft robots. Theories in traditional robotics rely on rigid body displacements via discrete joints and discrete actuators, while in soft robots, kinematic and actuation functions are blended, leading to nonlinear, continuous deformations rather than rigid body motion. This dissertation addresses the need for foundational techniques using continuum mechanics. Three core questions regarding the use of continuum mechanical models in soft robotics are explored: (1) whether or not continuum mechanical models can describe existing soft actuators, (2) which physical phenomena need to be incorporated into continuum mechanical models for their use in a soft robotics context, and (3) how understanding on continuum mechanical phenomena may form bases for novel soft robot architectures. Theoretical modeling, experimentation, and design prototyping tools are used to explore Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (FREEs), an often-used soft actuator, and to develop novel soft robot architectures based on auxetic behavior. This dissertation develops a continuum mechanical model for end loading on FREEs. This model connects a FREE’s actuation pressure and kinematic configuration to its end loads by considering stiffness of its elastomer and fiber reinforcement. The model is validated against a large experimental data set and compared to other FREE models used by roboticists. It is shown that the model can describe the FREE’s loading in a generalizable manner, but that it is bounded in its peak performance. Such a model can provide the novel function of evaluating the performance of FREE designs under high loading without the costs of building and testing prototypes. This dissertation further explores the influence viscoelasticity, an inherent property of soft polymers, on end loading of FREEs. The viscoelastic model developed can inform soft roboticists wishing to exploit or avoid hysteresis and force reversal. The final section of the dissertations explores two contrasting styles of auxetic metamaterials for their uses in soft robotic actuation. The first metamaterial architecture is composed of beams with distributed compliance, which are placed antagonistic configurations on a variety of surfaces, giving ride to shape morphing behavior. The second metamaterial architecture studied is a ``kirigami’’ sheet with an orthogonal cut pattern, utilizing lumped compliance and strain hardening to permanently deploy from a compact shape to a functional one. This dissertation lays the foundation for design of soft robots by robust physical models, reducing the need for physical prototypes and trial-and-error approaches. The work presented provides tools for systematic exploration of FREEs under loading in a wide range of configurations. The work further develops new concepts for soft actuators based on continuum mechanical modeling of auxetic metamaterials.     Design and Control of Compliant Actuation Topologies for Energy-Efficient Articulated Robots

    Considerable advances have been made in the field of robotic actuation in recent years. At the heart of this has been increased use of compliance. Arguably the most common approach is that of Series-Elastic Actuation (SEA), and SEAs have evolved to become the core component of many articulated robots. Another approach is integration of compliance in parallel to the main actuation, referred to as Parallel- Elastic Actuation (PEA). A wide variety of such systems has been proposed. While both approaches have demonstrated significant potential benefits, a number of key challenges remain with regards to the design and control of such actuators. This thesis addresses some of the challenges that exist in design and control of compliant actuation systems. First, it investigates the design, dynamics, and control of SEAs as the core components of next-generation robots. We consider the influence of selected physical stiffness on torque controllability and backdrivability, and propose an optimality criterion for impedance rendering. Furthermore, we consider disturbance observers for robust torque control. Simulation studies and experimental data validate the analyses. Secondly, this work investigates augmentation of articulated robots with adjustable parallel compliance and multi-articulated actuation for increased energy efficiency. Particularly, design optimisation of parallel compliance topologies with adjustable pretension is proposed, including multi-articulated arrangements. Novel control strategies are developed for such systems.     Model Based Control of Soft Robots: A Survey of the State of the Art and Open Challenges

    Continuum soft robots are mechanical systems entirely made of continuously deformable elements. This design solution aims to bring robots closer to invertebrate animals and soft appendices of vertebrate animals (e.g., an elephant's trunk, a monkey's tail). This work aims to introduce the control theorist perspective to this novel development in robotics. We aim to remove the barriers to entry into this field by presenting existing results and future challenges using a unified language and within a coherent framework. Indeed, the main difficulty in entering this field is the wide variability of terminology and scientific backgrounds, making it quite hard to acquire a comprehensive view on the topic. Another limiting factor is that it is not obvious where to draw a clear line between the limitations imposed by the technology not being mature yet and the challenges intrinsic to this class of robots. In this work, we argue that the intrinsic effects are the continuum or multi-body dynamics, the presence of a non-negligible elastic potential field, and the variability in sensing and actuation strategies.Comment: 69 pages, 13 figure

    Human-machine-centered design and actuation of lower limb prosthetic systems

    People with lower limb loss or congenital limb absence require a technical substitute that restores biomechanical function and body integrity. In the last decades, mechatronic prostheses emerged and especially actuated ones increased the biomechanical functionality of their users. Yet, various open issues regarding the energy efficiency of powered systems and the impact of user-experience of the prosthesis on technical design remain. As tackeling the latter aspect urgently requires the consideration of user demands, this thesis proposes a novel human-machine-centered design (HMCD) approach for lower limb prosthetics. Further, it contributes to the design and control of elastic (prosthetic) actuation. The HMCD approach describes a framework that equally considers technical and human factors. Therefore, seven human factors influencing lower limb prosthetic design are determined, analyzed, and modeled using human survey data: Satisfaction, Feeling of Security, Body Schema Integration, Support, Socket, Mobility, and Outer Appearance. Based on the application of quality function deployment (QFD), those factors can be considered as a HMCD focus in systems engineering. As an exemplary application, a powered prosthetic knee concept is elaborated with the HMCD approach. The comparison of the HMCD focus with a purely technical one, which is determined with a control group, reveals distinct differences in the weighting of requirements. Hence, the proposed method should lead to different prosthetic designs that might improve the subjective user-experience. To support this by integrating users throughout the systems engineering process, two concepts for human-in-the-loop experiments are suggested. As an enabling technology of powered lower limb prostheses, variable (series) elastic actuation and especially such with variable torsion stiffness (VTS) is investigated. Inverse dynamics simulations with synthetic and human trajectories as well as experiments show that the consideration of the actuator inertia is crucial: Only by including it in advanced models, the whole range of natural dynamics and antiresonance can be exploited to minimize power consumption. A corresponding control strategy adapts the actuator to achieve energy efficiency over a wide range of operational states using these models. The exemplary design of the powered prosthetic knee with respect to the HMCD prioritization of requirements confirms the fundamental suitability of VTS for integration in prosthetic components. In this, considering actuator inertia enables the determination of an optimal stiffness for serial elastic actuation of the human knee during walking that is not found in previous studies. A first simulation considering the changed dynamics of prosthetic gait indicates the potential to reveal lower design requirements. The designed knee concept combines promising biomechanical functionality and long operating time due to elastic actuation and energy recuperation. Beyond lower limb prosthetics, the proposed HMCD framework can be used in other applications with distinct human-machine interrelations by adjusting the human and technical factors. Likewise, the insights into variable elastic actuation design and control can be transferred to other systems demanding energy-efficient performance of cyclic tasks

    Adaptive robust interaction control for low-cost robotic grasping

    Robotic grasping is a challenging area in the field of robotics. When a gripper starts interacting with an object to perform a grasp, the mechanical properties of the object (stiffness and damping) will play an important role. A gripper which is stable in isolated conditions, can become unstable when coupled to an object. This can lead to the extreme condition where the gripper becomes unstable and generates excessive or insufficient grip force resulting in the grasped object either being crushed, or falling and breaking. In addition to the stability issue, grasp maintenance is one of the most important requirements of any grasp where it guarantees a secure grasp in the presence of any unknown disturbance. The term grasp maintenance refers to the reaction of the controller in the presence of external disturbances, trying to prevent any undesired slippage. To do so, the controller continuously adjusts the grip force. This is a challenging task as it requires an accurate model of the friction and object’s weight to estimate a sufficient grip force to stop the object from slipping while incurring minimum deformation. Unfortunately, in reality, there is no solution which is able to obtain the mechanical properties, frictional coefficient and weight of an object before establishing a mechanical interaction with it. External disturbance forces are also stochastic meaning they are impossible to predict. This thesis addresses both of the problems mentioned above by:Creating a novel variable stiffness gripper, capable of grasping unknown objects, mainly those found in agricultural or food manufacturing companies. In addition to the stabilisation effect of the introduced variable stiffness mechanism, a novel force control algorithm has been designed that passively controls the grip force in variable stiffness grippers. Due to the passive nature of the suggested controller, it completely eliminates the necessity for any force sensor. The combination of both the proposed variable stiffness gripper and the passivity based control provides a unique solution for the stable grasp and force control problem in tendon driven, angular grippers.Introducing a novel active multi input-multi output slip prevention algorithm. The algorithm developed provides a robust control solution to endow direct drive parallel jaw grippers with the capability to stop held objects from slipping while incurring minimum deformation; this can be done without any prior knowledge of the object’s friction and weight. The large number of experiments provided in this thesis demonstrate the robustness of the proposed controller when controlling parallel jaw grippers in order to quickly grip, lift and place a broad range of objects firmly without dropping or crushing them. This is particularly useful for teleoperation and nuclear decommissioning tasks where there is often no accurate information available about the objects to be handled. This can mean that pre-programming of the gripper is required for each different object and for high numbers of objects this is impractical and overly time-consuming. A robust controller, which is able to compensate for any uncertainties regarding the object model and any unknown external disturbances during grasping, is implemented. This work has advanced the state of the art in the following two main areas: Direct impedance modulation for stable grasping in tendon driven, angular grippers.
