Who is Citing Undergraduate Theses in Institutional Digital Repositories?: Implications for Scholarship and Information Literacy

Undergraduate theses are available through open access institutional repositories. Is undergraduate work being integrated into the larger body of academic research, and, if so, how? Institutional repositories containing undergraduate theses were selected and titles were searched using the forward citation feature in Google Scholar to determine if and where undergraduate scholarship is being cited. Results show that 24% of citations to senior theses were in peer-reviewed or refereed journals, and 33% in dissertations and theses. This paper addresses citation source and the potential value of undergraduate scholarship as well as the implications for information literacy instruction to senior thesis students

Research on the impact of open access on the citation of scientific publications

Open access is a well-established way of publishing\ud research results. There are many studies investigating\ud the influence of open access on visibility of articles and\ud citation counts. In this study, an overview and analysis\ud of bibliometric studies analysing the extent and speed\ud of citation were prepared, with special emphasis on the\ud impact of open access, separately for certain scientific\ud disciplines. We also highlight other factors that mainly\ud affect the increased visibility and, consequently, the\ud increase of the total citation count. We found that\ud in the future it will be necessary to standardize the\ud methodology of studying the effects of open access on\ud citations, before the hypothesis of a positive correlation\ud between the number of citations and open access can\ud be fully confirmed or refuted

La recerca i la nova comunicació científica. Tendències a tenir en compte a la UPC

Aquest exercici analitza la situació en la que es troben els dipòsits institucionals i el seu paper fonamental en la transformació de la comunicació científica. Es parla de les revistes en accés obert com a alternativa a la publicació tradicional però l’abast del treball es centrarà en l’anomena’t camí verd i els dipòsits institucionals. Els objectius són: proposar un seguit de recomanacions que serveixin a la UPC per fer una bona promoció del seu dipòsit i posar de manifest alguns dels reptes i/o oportunitats amb els que les biblioteques toparan pel que fa a la divulgació dels resultats de recerca. El treball s’estructura en quatre apartats: un d’introducció a la comunicació científica i les seves formes de publicació (revistes, revistes en accés obert, dipòsits); un segon que tracta de les contribucions de les biblioteques al moviment d’accés obert i en particular als dipòsits institucionals en un escenari que evoluciona ràpidament, un tercer que apunta als reptes/oportunitats amb els que es troben les biblioteques i per acabar un de conclusions. El treball es completa amb un cronologia que situa els fets més rellevants del moviment d’accés obert en el temps i amb un seguit d’annexos que amplien informació sobre el tema que aquí es tracta. S’ha cregut oportú afegir un llistat de conceptes clau amb la seva definició al començament del treball donada la seva rellevància en el desenvolupament del tema. Alguns dels termes inclosos són sovint mal interpretats bé per tractar-se d’anglicismes, bé per ser traduccions inexactes o bé per tractar-se de terminologia recent

Grey Literature in Library and Information Studies

Measuring citation advantages of open accessibility

This article describes a study, involving a set of articles published in scholarly journals by faculty members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) that have also been deposited in the HKUST Institutional Repository. The study was conducted to measure the actual effect of their open accessibility on citation rates. More importantly, the study suggests another quantitative method, and it is hoped that the study will inspire more effective methods of measuring the net impact of open access
