Analysis of internet traffic in educational network based on users' preferences
The demand for Internet services and network resources in Educational networks are increasing rapidly.Specifically, the revolution of web 2.0 "also referred to as the Read-Write Web" has changed the way of information exchange and distribution. Although web 2.0 has gained attraction in all sectors of the education industry, but it results in high-traffic loads on networks which often leads to the Internet users" dissatisfaction.Therefore, analyzing Internet traffic becomes an urgent need to provide high-quality service, monitoring bandwidth usage.In this study, we focus on analyzing the Internet traffic in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) main campus. We performed measurement analysis form the application level characteristics based on users' preferences.A total of three methodological steps are carried out to meet the objective of this study namely data collection, data analysis and data presentation.The finding shows that social networks are the most web applications visited in UUM.These findings lead to facilitate the enhancement of Educational network performance and Internet bandwidth strategies
How long delays impact TCP performance for a connectivity from Reunion Island ?
TCP is the protocol of transport the most used in the Internet and have a
heavy-dependence on delay. Reunion Island have a specific Internet connection,
based on main links to France, located 10.000 km away. As a result, the minimal
delay between Reunion Island and France is around 180 ms. In this paper, we
will study TCP traces collected in Reunion Island University. The goal is to

Big Data and Analysis of Data Transfers for International Research Networks Using NetSage
Modern science is increasingly data-driven and collaborative in nature. Many scientific disciplines, including genomics, high-energy physics, astronomy, and atmospheric science, produce petabytes of data that must be shared with collaborators all over the world. The National Science Foundation-supported International Research Network Connection (IRNC) links have been essential to enabling this collaboration, but as data sharing has increased, so has the amount of information being collected to understand network performance. New capabilities to measure and analyze the performance of international wide-area networks are essential to ensure end-users are able to take full advantage of such infrastructure for their big data applications. NetSage is a project to develop a unified, open, privacy-aware network measurement, and visualization service to address the needs of monitoring today's high-speed international research networks. NetSage collects data on both backbone links and exchange points, which can be as much as 1Tb per month. This puts a significant strain on hardware, not only in terms storage needs to hold multi-year historical data, but also in terms of processor and memory needs to analyze the data to understand network behaviors. This paper addresses the basic NetSage architecture, its current data collection and archiving approach, and details the constraints of dealing with this big data problem of handling vast amounts of monitoring data, while providing useful, extensible visualization to end users
Uncovering Vulnerable Industrial Control Systems from the Internet Core
Industrial control systems (ICS) are managed remotely with the help of
dedicated protocols that were originally designed to work in walled gardens.
Many of these protocols have been adapted to Internet transport and support
wide-area communication. ICS now exchange insecure traffic on an inter-domain
level, putting at risk not only common critical infrastructure but also the
Internet ecosystem (e.g., DRDoS~attacks).
In this paper, we uncover unprotected inter-domain ICS traffic at two central
Internet vantage points, an IXP and an ISP. This traffic analysis is correlated
with data from honeypots and Internet-wide scans to separate industrial from
non-industrial ICS traffic. We provide an in-depth view on Internet-wide ICS
communication. Our results can be used i) to create precise filters for
potentially harmful non-industrial ICS traffic, and ii) to detect ICS sending
unprotected inter-domain ICS traffic, being vulnerable to eavesdropping and
traffic manipulation attacks
Survey of End-to-End Mobile Network Measurement Testbeds, Tools, and Services
Mobile (cellular) networks enable innovation, but can also stifle it and lead
to user frustration when network performance falls below expectations. As
mobile networks become the predominant method of Internet access, developer,
research, network operator, and regulatory communities have taken an increased
interest in measuring end-to-end mobile network performance to, among other
goals, minimize negative impact on application responsiveness. In this survey
we examine current approaches to end-to-end mobile network performance
measurement, diagnosis, and application prototyping. We compare available tools
and their shortcomings with respect to the needs of researchers, developers,
regulators, and the public. We intend for this survey to provide a
comprehensive view of currently active efforts and some auspicious directions
for future work in mobile network measurement and mobile application

Characterization of ISP Traffic: Trends, User Habits, and Access Technology Impact
In the recent years, the research community has increased its focus on network monitoring which is seen as a key tool to understand the Internet and the Internet users. Several studies have presented a deep characterization of a particular application, or a particular network, considering the point of view of either the ISP, or the Internet user. In this paper, we take a different perspective. We focus on three European countries where we have been collecting traffic for more than a year and a half through 5 vantage points with different access technologies. This humongous amount of information allows us not only to provide precise, multiple, and quantitative measurements of "What the user do with the Internet" in each country but also to identify common/uncommon patterns and habits across different countries and nations. Considering different time scales, we start presenting the trend of application popularity; then we focus our attention to a one-month long period, and further drill into a typical daily characterization of users activity. Results depict an evolving scenario due to the consolidation of new services as Video Streaming and File Hosting and to the adoption of new P2P technologies.
