    Low weight additive manufacturing FBG accelerometer: design, characterization and testing

    Structural Health Monitoring is considered the process of damage detection and structural characterization by any type of on-board sensors. Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBG) are increasing their popularity due to their many advantages like easy multiplexing, negligible weight and size, high sensitivity, inert to electromagnetic fields, etc. FBGs allow obtaining directly strain and temperature, and other magnitudes can also be measured by the adaptation of the Bragg condition. In particular, the acceleration is of special importance for dynamic analysis. In this work, a low weight accelerometer has been developed using a FBG. It consists in a hexagonal lattice hollow cylinder designed with a resonance frequency above 500 Hz. A Finite Element Model (FEM) was used to analyse dynamic behaviour of the sensor. Then, it was modelled in a CAD software and exported to additive manufacturing machines. Finally, a characterization test campaign was carried out obtaining a sensitivity of 19.65 pm/g. As a case study, this paper presents the experimental modal analysis of the wing of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.     Impact detection techniques using fibre-optic sensors for aerospace & defence

    Impact detection techniques are developed for application in the aerospace and defence industries. Optical fibre sensors hold great promise for structural health monitoring systems and methods of interrogating fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) are investigated given the need for dynamic strain capture and multiplexed sensors. An arrayed waveguide grating based interrogator is developed. The relationships between key performance indicators, such as strain range and linearity of response, and parameters such as the FBG length and spectral width are determined. It was found that the inclusion of a semiconductor optical amplifier could increase the signal-to-noise ratio by ~300% as the system moves to its least sensitive. An alternative interrogator is investigated utilising two wave mixing in erbium-doped fibre in order to create an adaptive system insensitive to quasistatic strain and temperature drifts. Dynamic strain sensing was demonstrated at 200 Hz which remained functional while undergoing a temperature shift of 8.5 °C. In addition, software techniques are investigated for locating impact events on a curved composite structure using both time-of-flight triangulation and neural networks. A feature characteristic of composite damage creation is identified in dynamic signals captured during impact. An algorithm is developed which successfully distinguishes between signals characteristic of a non-damaging impact with those from a damaging impact with a classification accuracy of 93 – 96%. Finally, a demonstrator system is produced to exhibit some of the techniques developed in this thesis

    Review: optical fiber sensors for civil engineering applications

    Optical fiber sensor (OFS) technologies have developed rapidly over the last few decades, and various types of OFS have found practical applications in the field of civil engineering. In this paper, which is resulting from the work of the RILEM technical committee “Optical fiber sensors for civil engineering applications”, different kinds of sensing techniques, including change of light intensity, interferometry, fiber Bragg grating, adsorption measurement and distributed sensing, are briefly reviewed to introduce the basic sensing principles. Then, the applications of OFS in highway structures, building structures, geotechnical structures, pipelines as well as cables monitoring are described, with focus on sensor design, installation technique and sensor performance. It is believed that the State-of-the-Art review is helpful to engineers considering the use of OFS in their projects, and can facilitate the wider application of OFS technologies in construction industry

    A multisensing setup for the intelligent tire monitoring

    The present paper offers the chance to experimentally measure, for the first time, the internal tire strain by optical fiber sensors during the tire rolling in real operating conditions. The phenomena that take place during the tire rolling are in fact far from being completely understood. Despite several models available in the technical literature, there is not a correspondently large set of experimental observations. The paper includes the detailed description of the new multi-sensing technology for an ongoing vehicle measurement, which the research group has developed in the context of the project OPTYRE. The experimental apparatus is mainly based on the use of optical fibers with embedded Fiber Bragg Gratings sensors for the acquisition of the circumferential tire strain. Other sensors are also installed on the tire, such as a phonic wheel, a uniaxial accelerometer, and a dynamic temperature sensor. The acquired information is used as input variables in dedicated algorithms that allow the identification of key parameters, such as the dynamic contact patch, instantaneous dissipation and instantaneous grip. The OPTYRE project brings a contribution into the field of experimental grip monitoring of wheeled vehicles, with implications both on passive and active safety characteristics of cars and motorbikes

    Development and application of optical fibre strain and pressure sensors for in-flight measurements

    Fibre optic based sensors are becoming increasingly viable as replacements for traditional flight test sensors. Here we present laboratory, wind tunnel and flight test results of fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) used to measure surface strain and an extrinsic fibre Fabry–Perot interferometric (EFFPI) sensor used to measure unsteady pressure. The calibrated full scale resolution and bandwidth of the FBG and EFFPI sensors were shown to be 0.29% at 2.5 kHz up to 600 με and 0.15% at up to 10 kHz respectively up to 400 Pa. The wind tunnel tests, completed on a 30% scale model, allowed the EFFPI sensor to be developed before incorporation with the FBG system into a Bulldog aerobatic light aircraft. The aircraft was modified and certified based on Certification Standards 23 (CS-23) and flight tested with steady and dynamic manoeuvres. Aerobatic dynamic manoeuvres were performed in flight including a spin over a g-range −1g to +4g and demonstrated both the FBG and the EFFPI instruments to have sufficient resolution to analyse the wing strain and fuselage unsteady pressure characteristics. The steady manoeuvres from the EFFPI sensor matched the wind tunnel data to within experimental error while comparisons of the flight test and wind tunnel EFFPI results with a Kulite pressure sensor showed significant discrepancies between the two sets of data, greater than experimental error.     A progressive collapse evaluation of steel structures in high temperature environment with optical fiber sensors

    In the process of a progressive failure of steel structures in a post-earthquake fire, real-time assessment and prediction of structural behaviors are of paramount significance to an emergency evacuation and rescue effort. However, existing measurement technologies cannot provide the needed critical data such as large strains at high temperature. To bridge this gap, a novel optical fiber sensor network and an adaptive multi-scale finite element model (FEM) are proposed and developed in this study. The sensor network consists of long period fiber gratings (LPFG) sensors and extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) sensors or their integration. Each sensor is designed with a three-tier structure for an accurate and reliable measurement of large strains and for ease of installation. To maintain a balance between the total cost of computation and instrumentation and the accuracy in numerical simulation, a structure is divided into representative/critical components instrumented densely and the remaining components simulated computationally. The critical components and the remaining were modeled in different scales with fiber elements and beam/plate elements, respectively, so that the material behavior and load information measured from the critical components are representative to the remaining components and can be used to update the temperature distribution of the structure in real time. Sensitivity studies on the number of sensors and the initial selection of an updating temperature parameter were conducted. Both the sensor network and the FEM were validated with laboratory tests of a single-bay, one-story steel frame under simulated post-earthquake fire conditions. The validated FEM was applied to a two-bay, four-story steel building under the 1995 Kobe earthquake excitations. Based on extensive tests and analyses, the proposed sensor can measure a strain of 12% at as high as 800⁰C (1472⁰F) in temperature. Within the application range, the LPFG wavelength and the EFPI gap change linearly with the applied strain and temperature. The proposed updating criterion and algorithm in the adaptive FEM are proven to be effective. The number of sensors is sufficient in engineering applications as long as the sensors can adequately represent the material behavior of the instrumented components.     Characterization of the modal parameters of composite laminates using innovative ultrathin polymer waveguide sensor foils

    The use of composite materials, like glass- and carbon- fiber reinforced polymers, is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years. Consequently, in order to monitor the structural health of these materials, the development of new sensing devices is rapidly accelerating. For this purpose, our research groups have recently developed new ultra-thin polymer waveguide sensors which can be exploited to measure both uniaxial and multiaxial strains occurring in composite components. These sensing foils are manufactured by creating Bragg gratings in waveguides realized in flat polymeric substrates, which makes their placement and alignment easier compared to traditional fiber optic sensors. Moreover, using a non-straight waveguide it is possible to spatially multiplex the sensing gratings in such a way that an optical strain rosette can be created.
