AFIT research interests and faculty expertise cover a broad spectrum of technical areas related to USAF needs, as reflected by the range of topics addressed in the faculty and student publications listed in this report. In most cases, the research work reported herein is directly sponsored by one or more USAF or DOD agencies. AFIT welcomes the opportunity to conduct research on additional topics of interest to the USAF, DOD, and other federal organizations when adequate manpower and financial resources are available and/or provided by a sponsor. In addition, AFIT provides research collaboration and technology transfer benefits to the public through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs).     Institutional Voting Trends & Activist Investors — Measuring Mutual Fund Voting Behavior in Proxy Fight Director Elections

    I seek to identify which institutional investors are being the most proactive in terms of voting with or against activists and what factors influence mutual fund voting behavior using a dataset of activist campaign data and mutual fund vote records. Observing director election votes from Q3 2011 to Q2 2016, I conclude that some prominent fund families are siding with activists on a meaningful proportion of proposals. I also determine that variables like Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) recommendations and activists’ track records negatively affect opposition-sponsored director support, while stronger takeover defenses and prior year stock price return drive increases in the support of activists’ director nominees.Bachelor of Scienc

    The influence of organizational and information systems factors on the effectiveness of post-merger technology integration

    This dissertation explores how ten specific organizational and information systems factors influence post-merger IS integration success, and the role that degree of IS integration plays in moderating the influence these factors may have on IS integration success. Data were gathered, using a self-administered survey instrument, from senior IS executives at firms that experienced a U.S. public merger greater than $25 million between 2004 and 2007. Support is found for the study\u27s Conceptual Model, indicating that all ten factors in unison influence post-merger IS integration success. The data support the hypotheses that quality of merger planning, quality of communication of merger activities to IS, quality of IS integration planning, degree of end-user involvement in IS integration activities, and quality of technical support to users during the IS integration each have a significant influence on post-merger IS integration success. The data also support the moderating effect of degree of IS integration on the relationship between post-merger IS integration success and executive (non-IS) management support. In a supplemental path model analysis, a complex relationship is hypothesized to exist between the factors and IS Capability and IS Performance, the two IS integration success measures, As a result, four of the five remaining hypotheses are indirectly supported. This research expands the body of knowledge that identifies sources of IS integration performance, thus helping to explain sources of overall merger performance

    Engineering planetary lasers for interstellar communication

    Transmitting large amounts of data efficiently among neighboring stars will vitally support any eventual contact with extrasolar intelligence, whether alien or human. Laser carriers are particularly suitable for high-quality, targeted links. Space laser transmitter systems designed by this work, based on both demonstrated and imminent advanced space technology, could achieve reliable data transfer rates as high as 1 kb/s to matched receivers as far away as 25 pc, a distance including over 700 approximately solar-type stars. The centerpiece of this demonstration study is a fleet of automated spacecraft incorporating adaptive neural-net optical processing active structures, nuclear electric power plants, annular momentum control devices, and ion propulsion. Together the craft sustain, condition, modulate, and direct to stellar targets an infrared laser beam extracted from the natural mesospheric, solar-pumped, stimulated CO2 emission recently discovered at Venus. For a culture already supported by mature interplanetary industry, the cost of building planetary or high-power space laser systems for interstellar communication would be marginal, making such projects relevant for the next human century. Links using high-power lasers might support data transfer rates as high as optical frequencies could ever allow. A nanotechnological society such as we might become would inevitably use 10 to the 20th power b/yr transmission to promote its own evolutionary expansion out of the galaxy
