Computing Incentives for User-Based Relocation in Carsharing
Carsharing offers an environmentally friendly alternative to private car ownership. However, carsharing providers face the challenging task of matching shifting vehicle supply with fluctuating customer demand to prevent related operational inefficiencies and ensure customer satisfaction. To date, researchers have improved existing relocation strategies and developed new concepts with the use of information technology tools. Still, current literature lacks research on optimization and implementation of user-based relocation solutions. The most urgent need currently lies in the development of algorithms to compute and implement effective incentives for user-based relocation. We address these needs by utilizing a design science research approach to develop an automated machine learning-based incentive computation solution for incentivizing user-based relocation. We use a survey of 274 participants resulting in 1370 individual data points to train an incentive computation model, which is then applied within a small-scale field test. Results suggest that the algorithm computes appropriate incentives
An Optimal Ride Sharing Recommendation Framework for Carpooling Services
Carpooling services allow drivers to share rides with other passengers. This helps in reducing the passengersâ fares and time, as well as traffic congestion and increases the income for drivers. In recent years, several carpooling based recommendation systems have been proposed. However, most of the existing systems do no effectively balance the conflicting objectives of drivers and passengers. We propose a Highest Aggregated Score Vehicular Recommendation (HASVR) framework that recommends a vehicle with highest aggregated score to the requesting passenger. The aggregated score is based on parameters, namely: (a) average time delay, (b) vehicleâs capacity, (c) fare reduction, (d) driving distance, and (e) profit increment. We propose a heuristic that balances the incentives of both drivers and passengers keeping in consideration their constraints and the real-time traffic conditions. We evaluated HASVR with a real-world dataset that contains GPS trace data of 61,136 taxicabs. Evaluation results confirm the effectiveness of HASVR compared to existing scheme in reducing the total mileage used to deliver all passengers, reducing the passengersâ fare, increasing the profit of drivers, and increasing the percentage of satisfied ride requests
Matching Drivers and Transportation Requests in Crowdsourced Delivery Systems
While the sales volume of e-commerce transactions is growing rapidly, the traditional concept of packages delivery has been challenged by innovative approaches such as crowdsourced delivery. Using individuals, for example commuters, to deliver packages from senders to receivers can provide several economic and environmental benefits. This paper illustrates an algorithm that automates and optimizes the assignment of drivers to transportation requests by matching them based on transportation routes and time constraints. We evaluated our algorithm by using a simulated setting based on mobility data recorded in a major German city. This paper contributes to theory by giving guidance for future research on matching algorithms for crowdsourced delivery systems and to practice by illustrating an algorithm that can be adapted by existing and new crowdsourced delivery platforms
Optimization under Uncertainty for E-retail Distribution: From Suppliers to the Last Mile
This thesis examines problems faced in the distribution management of e-retailers, in different stages of the supply chain, while accounting for sources of uncertainty. The first problem studies distribution planning, under stochastic customer demand, in a transshipment network. To decide on a transportation schedule that minimizes transportation, inventory and outsourcing costs, the problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming model with recourse. Computational experiments demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of distribution plans generated while considering uncertainty, and provide insights on conditions under which the proposed model achieves significant cost savings.
We then focus our attention on a later phase in the supply chain: last-mile same-day delivery. We specifically study crowdsourced delivery, a new delivery system where freelance drivers deliver packages to customers with their own cars. We provide a comprehensive review of this system in terms of academic literature and industry practice. We present a classification of industry platforms based on their matching mechanisms, target markets, and compensation schemes. We also identify new challenges that this delivery system brings about, and highlight open research questions. We then investigate two important research questions faced by crowdsourced delivery platforms.
The second problem in this thesis examines the question of balancing driver capacity and demand in crowdsourced delivery systems when there is randomness in supply and demand. We propose models and test the use of heatmaps as a balancing tool for directing drivers to regions with shortage, with an increased likelihood, but not a guarantee, of a revenue-producing order match. We develop an MDP model to sequentially select matching and heatmap decisions that maximize demand fulfillment. The model is solved using a stochastic look-ahead policy, based on approximate dynamic programming. Computational experiments on a real-world dataset demonstrate the value of heatmaps, and factors that impact the effectiveness of heatmaps in improving demand fulfillment.
The third problem studies the integration of driver welfare considerations within a platform's dynamic matching decisions. This addresses the common criticism of the lack of protection for workers in the sharing economy, by proposing compensation guarantees to drivers, while maintaining the work hour flexibility of the sharing economy. We propose and model three types of compensation guarantees, either utilization-based or wage-based. We formulate an MDP model, then utilize value function approximation to efficiently solve the problem. Computational experiments are presented to assess the proposed solution approach and evaluate the impact of the different types of guarantees on both the platform and the drivers
