Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress

The availability of third-party apps is among the key success factors for software ecosystems: The users benefit from more features and innovation speed, while third-party solution vendors can leverage the platform to create successful offerings. However, this requires a certain decoupling of engineering activities of the different parties not achieved for distributed control systems, yet. While late and dynamic integration of third-party components would be required, resulting control systems must provide high reliability regarding real-time requirements, which leads to integration complexity. Closing this gap would particularly contribute to the vision of software-defined manufacturing, where an ecosystem of modern IT-based control system components could lead to faster innovations due to their higher abstraction and availability of various frameworks. Therefore, this thesis addresses the research question: How we can use modern IT technologies and enable independent evolution and easy third-party integration of software components in distributed control systems, where deterministic end-to-end reactivity is required, and especially, how can we apply distributed changes to such systems consistently and reactively during operation? This thesis describes the challenges and related approaches in detail and points out that existing approaches do not fully address our research question. To tackle this gap, a formal specification of a runtime platform concept is presented in conjunction with a model-based engineering approach. The engineering approach decouples the engineering steps of component definition, integration, and deployment. The runtime platform supports this approach by isolating the components, while still offering predictable end-to-end real-time behavior. Independent evolution of software components is supported through a concept for synchronous reconfiguration during full operation, i.e., dynamic orchestration of components. Time-critical state transfer is supported, too, and can lead to bounded quality degradation, at most. The reconfiguration planning is supported by analysis concepts, including simulation of a formally specified system and reconfiguration, and analyzing potential quality degradation with the evolving dataflow graph (EDFG) method. A platform-specific realization of the concepts, the real-time container architecture, is described as a reference implementation. The model and the prototype are evaluated regarding their feasibility and applicability of the concepts by two case studies. The first case study is a minimalistic distributed control system used in different setups with different component variants and reconfiguration plans to compare the model and the prototype and to gather runtime statistics. The second case study is a smart factory showcase system with more challenging application components and interface technologies. The conclusion is that the concepts are feasible and applicable, even though the concepts and the prototype still need to be worked on in future -- for example, to reach shorter cycle times.

In today’s digital age, the increasing demand for networks, driven by the proliferation of connected devices, data-intensive applications, and transformative technologies, necessitates robust and efficient network infrastructure. This thesis addresses the challenges posed by virtualization in 5G networking and focuses on enhancing next-generation Radio Access Networks (RANs), particularly Open-RAN (O-RAN). The objective is to transform virtualized networks into highly reliable, secure, and latency-aware systems. To achieve this, the thesis proposes novel strategies for virtual function placement, traffic steering, and virtual function security within O-RAN. These solutions utilize optimization techniques such as binary integer programming, mixed integer binary programming, column generation, and machine learning algorithms, including supervised learning and deep reinforcement learning. By implementing these contributions, network service providers can deploy O-RAN with enhanced reliability, speed, and security, specifically tailored for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications use cases. The optimized RAN virtualization achieved through this research unlocks a new era in network architecture that can confidently support URLLC applications, including Autonomous Vehicles, Industrial Automation and Robotics, Public Safety and Emergency Services, and Smart Grids

This reprint aims to collect state-of-the-art research contributions that address challenges in the emerging 5G networks design, dimensioning and optimization. Designing, dimensioning and optimization of communication networks resources and services have been an inseparable part of telecom network development. The latter must convey a large volume of traffic, providing service to traffic streams with highly differentiated requirements in terms of bit-rate and service time, required quality of service and quality of experience parameters. Such a communication infrastructure presents many important challenges, such as the study of necessary multi-layer cooperation, new protocols, performance evaluation of different network parts, low layer network design, network management and security issues, and new technologies in general, which will be discussed in this book

Ωστόσο, ορισμένες υπηρεσίες, όπως η επαυξημένη πραγματικότητα (Augmented Reality -AR), το εργοστάσιο του μέλλοντος (Factory of the Future) κ.λπ. The fifth generation (5G) of wireless and mobile communications is expected to have a far-reaching impact on society and businesses beyond the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. 5G is aligned with the 4th industrial evolution, blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres. A common design is necessary to accommodate all service types based on energy and cost efficiency. To address this, this PhD thesis adopts the idea of a universal 5G platform that integrates a variety of networking technologies (wireless and wired), and aims to develop mathematical tools, algorithms and protocols for the energy and operational optimization of this infrastructure and the services it provides. This infrastructure interconnects computing, storage and network components that are placed at different locations, using the concepts of programmable hardware (hardware-HW) and network software (network softwarisation). In this way, it enables the provision of any service by flexibly and efficiently mixing and matching network, computing and storage resources. The thesis targeted four distinct contributions. All proposed contributions are implemented and investigated experimentally in a 5G open-source lab testbed. The first contribution focused on optimal function and resource allocation adopting the innovative 5G RAN architecture, that splits flexibly the baseband processing function chain between Remote, Distributed and Central Units. This enables access to shared resources provided by micro or large-scale remote data centers, without requiring resource ownership. To support this architecture, networks adopt the Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach, where the control plane is decoupled from the data plane and the associated network devices and is centralized in a software-based controller. In this context, the goal of the proposed approach was to develop effective optimization techniques that identify the optimal functional split, along with the optimal location and size of the SDN controllers. The second contribution concentrated on solving the User Plane Function (UPF) selection problem in 5G core networks. According to the SDN paradigm 5G core control plane functions manage the network, while UPFs are responsible for handling users’ data. Depending on the 5G RAN deployment option and the nature of the service, UPF nodes can be placed closer to the network edge, directing traffic to the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) servers hence reducing latency, or be placed deeper into the network directing traffic to central cloud facilities. In this context, a framework that selects the optimal UPF nodes to handle user’s traffic minimizing total service delay has been proposed. The third contribution pertained to service provisioning in upcoming telecommunication systems. 6G systems require novel architectural Quality of Experience (QoE) models and resource allocation strategies that can differentiate between data streams originating from the same or multiple User Equipment (UEs), respond to changes in the underlying physical infrastructure, and scale with the number of connected devices. Currently, centralized management and network orchestration (MANO) platforms provide this functionality, but they suffer scalability issues. Therefore, future systems are anticipated to operate in a distributed manner, allowing applications to directly intervene in relevant control processes to ensure the required QoE. The proposed approach focused on developing a flow assignment model that supports applications running on UEs. The final contribution of this thesis focused on the deployment of a 5G infrastructure that supports multi-tenant network slicing on demand. Sharing of the underlying physical infrastructure was achieved through the development of suitable interfaces for integrating different network components and the creation of appropriate descriptors for virtual 5G network functions (VNFs). By collecting and combining multiple VNFs, an end-to-end 5G Network Service (NS) can be obtained. Using a MANO platform, these NSs can be combined to instantiate and manage a 5G network slice

Deep neural network (DNN) inference has become increasingly demanding over the years in terms of memory storage, computational complexity, and energy consumption. Developing hardware targeting DNNs can be a lengthy process, which only grows if considered the time of writing software for it. Therefore, this thesis consists of the validation of the NVDLA deep learning hardware accelerator (NVDLA) using a co-simulation environment based on its hybrid platform: a CPU implemented as a Virtual Prototype (VP) based on Quick Emulator (QEMU) and the NVDLA RTL hardware model on a FPGA. For this, the more portable nv_small architecture of the NVDLA is configured into the FPGA of a F1 instance from the EC2 AWS service. To complement the system, the VP of the NVDLA is used, consisting of an Arm CPU emulated with QEMU running a Linux OS and the NVDLA runtime software, inside a SystemC/TLM wrapper connected to the F1 instance FPGA through a PCI express port. Once the hybrid co-simulation platform is set up, hardware regression tests are run on the FPGA implementation in order to check proper functionality and integrity of the NVDLA component blocks, sanity software tests are run on the VP to check the correct setup of the whole stack, and finally the AlexNet DNN is executed. The results showed proper hardware and VP functionality, and the AlexNet execution in the cosimulation environment was successful, taking approximately 112 minutes

[EN] This dissertation covers the state-of-the-art in LTE eMBMS Release 14, also known as Enhanced Television Services (ENTV). ENTV provided a suite of radio and core enhancements that made eMBMS into a viable terrestrial broadcast standard. The latest iteration of this technology is known as LTE-based 5G Broadcast; even though it is not New Radio or 5G Core based. To bridge this gap, research efforts by academia, public and private enterprises evaluated how to provide a 5G-based solution for point-to-multipoint services. The most notable effort in this regard is the Horizon 2020 project 5G-Xcast, which ran from 2017 to 2019. 5G-Xcast provided several architectural solutions, from the content delivery perspective down to air interface specifics; providing new waveforms based on New Radio and Network Functions interoperable with a Release 15 5G Core. The findings are summarized in this thesis. Two examples of eMBMS applied to different verticals are included in the thesis, one for the use of eMBMS in industrial environments, and the other using eMBMS as a PWS technology. Providing point-to-multipoint services as another cellular service poses some problems, as the standardization process of eMBMS showed: the broadcast infrastructure is different than the cellular one. Having a waveform that is suited for both scenarios is a difficult endeavour. The thesis provides a new perspective into this problem: Having existing Terrestrial Broadcast standards and infrastructure be the point-to-multipoint solution of 5G, where mobile operators and broadcasters collaborate together. This is defined in the dissertation as Convergence of Terrestrial and Mobile Networks. The technologies chosen to be converged together were ATSC 3.0 and 5G; using the existing Release 16 framework known as Advanced Traffic Steering, Switching and Splitting (ATSSS). ATSSS is a series of procedures, interfaces, new Network Functions, to allow the joint use of a 3GPP Access Network alongside a non-3GPP one, like Wi-Fi. However, the use of ATSSS for cellular plus broadcast brings challenges, as the ATSSS technology was not designed to be used with a unidirectional access network like ATSC 3.0. These limitations are described in detail, and an architectural proposal that overcomes the limitations is proposed. This solution is based on Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), and how to provide Convergent Services (i.e File Repair and Video Offloading) is shown. The thesis concludes with a description of Release 17 5MBS, including the new concepts introduced. 5MBS features the capacity of switching between unicast, multicast and broadcast; depending on the service addressed, the geographical location of the users, and the capability of the RAN infrastructure targeted. In order to evaluate 5MBS, a performance study of the use of multicast inside the 5G Core has been carried out. The 5MBS prototype was developed as part of the VLC Campus 5G laboratory, using the commercial software Open5GCore which provides the libraries and Network Functions to deploy your own 5G Private Network in testing environments. The system model of the experiment is formed by a video server, connected to the Open5GCore and the 5MBS enhanced functions; which will deliver the content to an emulated RAN environment hosting virtual gNBs and devices. The results obtained reinforce the objective of the thesis, positioning point-to-multipoint as a scalable way to deliver live content.Research projects: 5G-Xcast: Broadcast and Multicast Communication Enablers for the Fifth-Generation of Wireless Systems (H2020 No 761498); 5G-TOURS: SmarT mObility, media and e-health for toURists and citizenS (H2020 No 856950); FUDGE-5G: FUlly DisinteGrated private nEtworks for 5G verticals (H2020 No 957242).Barjau Estevan, CS. Modern mobile communication networks and new service applications are deployed on cloud-native platforms. Kubernetes (K8s) is the de facto distributed operating system for container orchestration, and the extended version of the Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF)- in the Linux (and MS Windows) kernel- is fundamentally changing the approach to cloud-native networking, security, and observability. In this paper, we introduce what eBPF is, its potential for Telco cloud, and review some of the most promising pricing and billing models applied to this revolutionary operating system (OS) technology. These models include schemes based on a data source usage model or the number of eBPF agents deployed on the network, linked to specific eBPF modules. These modules encompass network observability, runtime security, and power dissipation monitoring. Next, we present our eBPF platform, named Sauron in this work, and demonstrate how eBPF allows us to write custom code and dynamically load eBPF programs into the kernel. These programs enable us to estimate the energy consumption of cloud-native functions, derive performance counters and gauges for transport networks, 5G applications, and non-access stratum protocols. Additionally, we can detect and respond to unauthorized access to cloud-native resources in real-time using eBPF. Our experimental results demonstrate the technical feasibility of eBPF in achieving highly performant monitoring, observability, and security tooling for current mobile networks (5G, 5G Advanced) as well as future networks (6G and beyond)
