Making Affine Correspondences Work in Camera Geometry Computation
Local features e.g. SIFT and its affine and learned variants provide region-to-region rather than point-to-point correspondences. This has recently been exploited to create new minimal solvers for classical problems such as homography, essential and fundamental matrix estimation. The main advantage of such solvers is that their sample size is smaller, e.g., only two instead of four matches are required to estimate a homography. Works proposing such solvers often claim a significant improvement in run-time thanks to fewer RANSAC iterations. We show that this argument is not valid in practice if the solvers are used naively. To overcome this, we propose guidelines for effective use of region-to-region matches in the course of a full model estimation pipeline. We propose a method for refining the local feature geometries by symmetric intensity-based matching, combine uncertainty propagation inside RANSAC with preemptive model verification, show a general scheme for computing uncertainty of minimal solvers results, and adapt the sample cheirality check for homography estimation. Our experiments show that affine solvers can achieve accuracy comparable to point-based solvers at faster run-times when following our guidelines. Affine Subspace Representation for Feature Description
This paper proposes a novel Affine Subspace Representation (ASR) descriptor
to deal with affine distortions induced by viewpoint changes. Unlike the
traditional local descriptors such as SIFT, ASR inherently encodes local
information of multi-view patches, making it robust to affine distortions while
maintaining a high discriminative ability. To this end, PCA is used to
represent affine-warped patches as PCA-patch vectors for its compactness and
efficiency. Then according to the subspace assumption, which implies that the
PCA-patch vectors of various affine-warped patches of the same keypoint can be
represented by a low-dimensional linear subspace, the ASR descriptor is
obtained by using a simple subspace-to-point mapping. Such a linear subspace
representation could accurately capture the underlying information of a
keypoint (local structure) under multiple views without sacrificing its
distinctiveness. To accelerate the computation of ASR descriptor, a fast
approximate algorithm is proposed by moving the most computational part (ie,
warp patch under various affine transformations) to an offline training stage.
Experimental results show that ASR is not only better than the state-of-the-art
descriptors under various image transformations, but also performs well without
a dedicated affine invariant detector when dealing with viewpoint changes.Comment: To Appear in the 2014 European Conference on Computer Visio
Rectification from Radially-Distorted Scales
This paper introduces the first minimal solvers that jointly estimate lens
distortion and affine rectification from repetitions of rigidly transformed
coplanar local features. The proposed solvers incorporate lens distortion into
the camera model and extend accurate rectification to wide-angle images that
contain nearly any type of coplanar repeated content. We demonstrate a
principled approach to generating stable minimal solvers by the Grobner basis
method, which is accomplished by sampling feasible monomial bases to maximize
numerical stability. Synthetic and real-image experiments confirm that the
solvers give accurate rectifications from noisy measurements when used in a
RANSAC-based estimator. The proposed solvers demonstrate superior robustness to
noise compared to the state-of-the-art. The solvers work on scenes without
straight lines and, in general, relax the strong assumptions on scene content
made by the state-of-the-art. Accurate rectifications on imagery that was taken
with narrow focal length to near fish-eye lenses demonstrate the wide
applicability of the proposed method. The method is fully automated, and the
code is publicly available at https://github.com/prittjam/repeats.Comment: pre-prin
P1AC: Revisiting Absolute Pose From a Single Affine Correspondence
We introduce a novel solution to the problem of estimating the pose of a
calibrated camera given a single observation of an oriented point and an affine
correspondence to a reference image. Affine correspondences have traditionally
been used to improve feature matching over wide baselines; however, little
previous work has considered the use of such correspondences for absolute
camera pose computation. The advantage of our approach (P1AC) is that it
requires only a single correspondence in the minimal case in comparison to the
traditional point-based approach (P3P) which requires at least three points.
Our method removes the limiting assumptions made in previous work and provides
a general solution that is applicable to large-scale image-based localization.
Our evaluation on synthetic data shows that our approach is numerically stable
and more robust to point observation noise than P3P. We also evaluate the
application of our approach for large-scale image-based localization and
demonstrate a practical reduction in the number of iterations and computation
time required to robustly localize an image
Nonrigid reconstruction of 3D breast surfaces with a low-cost RGBD camera for surgical planning and aesthetic evaluation
Accounting for 26% of all new cancer cases worldwide, breast cancer remains
the most common form of cancer in women. Although early breast cancer has a
favourable long-term prognosis, roughly a third of patients suffer from a
suboptimal aesthetic outcome despite breast conserving cancer treatment.
Clinical-quality 3D modelling of the breast surface therefore assumes an
increasingly important role in advancing treatment planning, prediction and
evaluation of breast cosmesis. Yet, existing 3D torso scanners are expensive
and either infrastructure-heavy or subject to motion artefacts. In this paper
we employ a single consumer-grade RGBD camera with an ICP-based registration
approach to jointly align all points from a sequence of depth images
non-rigidly. Subtle body deformation due to postural sway and respiration is
successfully mitigated leading to a higher geometric accuracy through
regularised locally affine transformations. We present results from 6 clinical
cases where our method compares well with the gold standard and outperforms a
previous approach. We show that our method produces better reconstructions
qualitatively by visual assessment and quantitatively by consistently obtaining
lower landmark error scores and yielding more accurate breast volume estimates
Robust automatic target tracking based on a Bayesian ego-motion compensation framework for airborne FLIR imagery
Automatic target tracking in airborne FLIR imagery is currently a challenge due to the camera ego-motion. This phenomenon distorts the spatio-temporal correlation of the video sequence, which dramatically reduces the tracking performance. Several works address this problem using ego-motion compensation strategies. They use a deterministic approach to compensate the camera motion assuming a specific model of geometric transformation. However, in real sequences a specific geometric transformation can not accurately describe the camera ego-motion for the whole sequence, and as consequence of this, the performance of the tracking stage can significantly decrease, even completely fail. The optimum transformation for each pair of consecutive frames depends on the relative depth of the elements that compose the scene, and their degree of texturization. In this work, a novel Particle Filter framework is proposed to efficiently manage several hypothesis of geometric transformations: Euclidean, affine, and projective. Each type of transformation is used to compute candidate locations of the object in the current frame. Then, each candidate is evaluated by the measurement model of the Particle Filter using the appearance information. This approach is able to adapt to different camera ego-motion conditions, and thus to satisfactorily perform the tracking. The proposed strategy has been tested on the AMCOM FLIR dataset, showing a high efficiency in the tracking of different types of targets in real working conditions
