    Kinetic and dynamic data structures for convex hulls and upper envelopes

    AbstractLet S be a set of n moving points in the plane. We present a kinetic and dynamic (randomized) data structure for maintaining the convex hull of S. The structure uses O(n) space, and processes an expected number of O(n2βs+2(n)logn) critical events, each in O(log2n) expected time, including O(n) insertions, deletions, and changes in the flight plans of the points. Here s is the maximum number of times where any specific triple of points can become collinear, βs(q)=λs(q)/q, and λs(q) is the maximum length of Davenport–Schinzel sequences of order s on n symbols. Compared with the previous solution of Basch, Guibas and Hershberger [J. Basch, L.J. Guibas, J. Hershberger, Data structures for mobile data, J. Algorithms 31 (1999) 1–28], our structure uses simpler certificates, uses roughly the same resources, and is also dynamic

    From February 17th to 22nd 2008, the Dagstuhl Seminar 08081 ``Data Structures\u27\u27 was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. It brought together 49 researchers from four continents to discuss recent developments concerning data structures in terms of research but also in terms of new technologies that impact how data can be stored, updated, and retrieved. During the seminar a fair number of participants presented their current research. There was discussion of ongoing work, and in addition an open problem session was held. This paper first describes the seminar topics and goals in general, then gives the minutes of the open problem session, and concludes with abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar. Where appropriate and available, links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided

    The Zigzag Path of a Pseudo-Triangulation

    We define the zigzag path of a pseudo-triangulation, a concept generalizing the path of a triangulation of a point set. The pseudotriangulation zigzag path allows us to use divide-and-conquer type of approaches for suitable (i.e., decomposable) problems on pseudo-triangulations. For this we provide an algorithm that enumerates all pseudotriangulation zigzag paths (of all pseudo-triangulations of a given point set with respect to a given line) in O(n2) time per path and O(n2) space, where n is the number of points. We illustrate applications of our scheme which include a novel algorithm to count the number of pseudotriangulations of a point set. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003

    Study of ceramic products and processing techniques in space

    An analysis of the solidification kinetics of beta alumina in a zero-gravity environment was carried out, using computer-simulation techniques, in order to assess the feasibility of producing high-quality single crystals of this material in space. The two coupled transport processes included were movement of the solid-liquid interface and diffusion of sodium atoms in the melt. Results of the simulation indicate that appreciable crystal-growth rates can be attained in space. Considerations were also made of the advantages offered by high-quality single crystals of beta alumina for use as a solid electrolyte; these clearly indicate that space-grown materials are superior in many respects to analogous terrestrially-grown crystals. Likewise, economic considerations, based on the rapidly expanding technological applications for beta alumina and related fast ionic conductors, reveal that the many superior qualities of space-grown material justify the added expense and experimental detail associated with space processing

    A Systematic Review of Approximability Results for Traveling Salesman Problems leveraging the TSP-T3CO Definition Scheme

    The traveling salesman (or salesperson) problem, short TSP, is a problem of strong interest to many researchers from mathematics, economics, and computer science. Manifold TSP variants occur in nearly every scientific field and application domain: engineering, physics, biology, life sciences, and manufacturing just to name a few. Several thousand papers are published on theoretical research or application-oriented results each year. This paper provides the first systematic survey on the best currently known approximability and inapproximability results for well-known TSP variants such as the "standard" TSP, Path TSP, Bottleneck TSP, Maximum Scatter TSP, Generalized TSP, Clustered TSP, Traveling Purchaser Problem, Profitable Tour Problem, Quota TSP, Prize-Collecting TSP, Orienteering Problem, Time-dependent TSP, TSP with Time Windows, and the Orienteering Problem with Time Windows. The foundation of our survey is the definition scheme T3CO, which we propose as a uniform, easy-to-use and extensible means for the formal and precise definition of TSP variants. Applying T3CO to formally define the variant studied by a paper reveals subtle differences within the same named variant and also brings out the differences between the variants more clearly. We achieve the first comprehensive, concise, and compact representation of approximability results by using T3CO definitions. This makes it easier to understand the approximability landscape and the assumptions under which certain results hold. Open gaps become more evident and results can be compared more easily
