Soft-Decision-Driven Channel Estimation for Pipelined Turbo Receivers
We consider channel estimation specific to turbo equalization for
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication. We develop a
soft-decision-driven sequential algorithm geared to the pipelined turbo
equalizer architecture operating on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing
(OFDM) symbols. One interesting feature of the pipelined turbo equalizer is
that multiple soft-decisions become available at various processing stages. A
tricky issue is that these multiple decisions from different pipeline stages
have varying levels of reliability. This paper establishes an effective
strategy for the channel estimator to track the target channel, while dealing
with observation sets with different qualities. The resulting algorithm is
basically a linear sequential estimation algorithm and, as such, is
Kalman-based in nature. The main difference here, however, is that the proposed
algorithm employs puncturing on observation samples to effectively deal with
the inherent correlation among the multiple demapper/decoder module outputs
that cannot easily be removed by the traditional innovations approach. The
proposed algorithm continuously monitors the quality of the feedback decisions
and incorporates it in the channel estimation process. The proposed channel
estimation scheme shows clear performance advantages relative to existing
channel estimation techniques.Comment: 11 pages; IEEE Transactions on Communications 201
Two-tier channel estimation aided near-capacity MIMO transceivers relying on norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection
We propose a norm-based joint transmit and receive antenna selection (NBJTRAS) aided near-capacity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system relying on the assistance of a novel two-tier channel estimation scheme. Specifically, a rough estimate of the full MIMO channel is first generated using a low-complexity, low-training-overhead minimum mean square error based channel estimator, which relies on reusing a modest number of radio frequency (RF) chains. NBJTRAS is then carried out based on this initial full MIMO channel estimate. The NBJTRAS aided MIMO system is capable of significantly outperforming conventional MIMO systems equipped with the same modest number of RF chains, while dispensing with the idealised simplifying assumption of having perfectly known channel state information (CSI). Moreover, the initial subset channel estimate associated with the selected subset MIMO channel matrix is then used for activating a powerful semi-blind joint channel estimation and turbo detector-decoder, in which the channel estimate is refined by a novel block-of-bits selection based soft-decision aided channel estimator (BBSB-SDACE) embedded in the iterative detection and decoding process. The joint channel estimation and turbo detection-decoding scheme operating with the aid of the proposed BBSB-SDACE channel estimator is capable of approaching the performance of the near-capacity maximumlikelihood (ML) turbo transceiver associated with perfect CSI. This is achieved without increasing the complexity of the ML turbo detection and decoding process
Near-Capacity Turbo Coded Soft-decision Aided DAPSK/Star-QAM
Low-complexity non-coherently detected Differential Amplitude and Phase-Shift Keying (DAPSK) schemes constitute an ideal candidate for wireless communications. In this paper, we derive the soft-output probability formulas required for the soft-decision based demodulation of DAPSK, which are then invoked for Turbo Coded (TC) transmissions. Furthermore, the achievable throughput characteristics of the family of M-ary DAPSK schemes are provided. It is shown that the proposed 4-ring based TC assisted 64-ary DAPSK scheme achieves a coding gain of about 4.2 dBs in comparison to the identical-throughput TC assisted 64-ary Differential Phase-Shift Keying (64-DPSK) scheme at a bit error ratio of 10?5
Approximate MIMO Iterative Processing with Adjustable Complexity Requirements
Targeting always the best achievable bit error rate (BER) performance in
iterative receivers operating over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)
channels may result in significant waste of resources, especially when the
achievable BER is orders of magnitude better than the target performance (e.g.,
under good channel conditions and at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)). In
contrast to the typical iterative schemes, a practical iterative decoding
framework that approximates the soft-information exchange is proposed which
allows reduced complexity sphere and channel decoding, adjustable to the
transmission conditions and the required bit error rate. With the proposed
approximate soft information exchange the performance of the exact soft
information can still be reached with significant complexity gains.Comment: The final version of this paper appears in IEEE Transactions on

Advanced constellation and demapper schemes for next generation digital terrestrial television broadcasting systems
A Scalable VLSI Architecture for Soft-Input Soft-Output Depth-First Sphere Decoding
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless transmission imposes huge
challenges on the design of efficient hardware architectures for iterative
receivers. A major challenge is soft-input soft-output (SISO) MIMO demapping,
often approached by sphere decoding (SD). In this paper, we introduce the - to
our best knowledge - first VLSI architecture for SISO SD applying a single
tree-search approach. Compared with a soft-output-only base architecture
similar to the one proposed by Studer et al. in IEEE J-SAC 2008, the
architectural modifications for soft input still allow a one-node-per-cycle
execution. For a 4x4 16-QAM system, the area increases by 57% and the operating
frequency degrades by 34% only.Comment: Accepted for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II Express
