Capacity Planning and Leadtime management
In this paper we discuss a framework for capacity planning and lead time management in manufacturing companies, with an emphasis on the machine shop. First we show how queueing models can be used to find approximations of the mean and the variance of manufacturing shop lead times. These quantities often serve as a basis to set a fixed planned lead time in an MRP-controlled environment. A major drawback of a fixed planned lead time is the ignorance of the correlation between actual work loads and the lead times that can be realized under a limited capacity flexibility. To overcome this problem, we develop a method that determines the earliest possible completion time of any arriving job, without sacrificing the delivery performance of any other job in the shop. This earliest completion time is then taken to be the delivery date and thereby determines a workload-dependent planned lead time. We compare this capacity planning procedure with a fixed planned lead time approach (as in MRP), with a procedure in which lead times are estimated based on the amount of work in the shop, and with a workload-oriented release procedure. Numerical experiments so far show an excellent performance of the capacity planning procedure
Non-Preemptive Scheduling on Machines with Setup Times
Consider the problem in which n jobs that are classified into k types are to
be scheduled on m identical machines without preemption. A machine requires a
proper setup taking s time units before processing jobs of a given type. The
objective is to minimize the makespan of the resulting schedule. We design and
analyze an approximation algorithm that runs in time polynomial in n, m and k
and computes a solution with an approximation factor that can be made

An investigation into minimising total energy consumption and total completion time in a flexible job shop for recycling carbon fiber reinforced polymer
The increased use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) in industry coupled with European Union restrictions on landfill disposal has
resulted in a need to develop relevant recycling technologies. Several methods, such as mechanical grinding, thermolysis and solvolysis, have
been tried to recover the carbon fibers. Optimisation techniques for reducing energy consumed by above processes have also been developed.
However, the energy efficiency of recycling CFRP at the workshop level has never been considered before. An approach to incorporate energy
reduction into consideration while making the scheduling plans for a CFRP recycling workshop is presented in this paper. This research sets in
a flexible job shop circumstance, model for the bi-objective problem that minimise total processing energy consumption and makespan is developed.
A modified Genetic Algorithm for solving the raw material lot splitting problem is developed. A case study of the lot sizing problem
in the flexible job shop for recycling CFRP is presented to show how scheduling plans affect energy consumption, and to prove the feasibility

Scheduling Jobs in Flowshops with the Introduction of Additional Machines in the Future

with the possibility of evolving into hybrid flowshops in the future, is investigated in\ud
this paper. As this research is guided by a real problem in industry, the flowshop\ud
considered has considerable flexibility, which stimulated the development of an\ud
innovative methodology for this research. Each stage of the flowshop currently has\ud
one or several identical machines. However, the manufacturing company is planning\ud
to introduce additional machines with different capabilities in different stages in the\ud
near future. Thus, the algorithm proposed and developed for the problem is not only\ud
capable of solving the current flow line configuration but also the potential new\ud
configurations that may result in the future. A meta-heuristic search algorithm based\ud
on Tabu search is developed to solve this NP-hard, industry-guided problem. Six\ud
different initial solution finding mechanisms are proposed. A carefully planned\ud
nested split-plot design is performed to test the significance of different factors and\ud
their impact on the performance of the different algorithms. To the best of our\ud
knowledge, this research is the first of its kind that attempts to solve an industry-guided\ud
problem with the concern for future developments
Mathematical models for planning support
In this paper we describe how computer systems can provide planners with active planning support, when these planners are carrying out their daily planning activities. This means that computer systems actively participate in the planning process by automatically generating plans or partial plans. Active planning support by computer systems requires the application of mathematical models and solution techniques. In this paper we describe the modeling process in general terms, as well as several modeling and solution techniques. We also present some background information on computational complexity theory, since most practical planning problems are hard to solve. We also describe how several objective functions can be handled, since it is rare that solutions can be evaluated by just one single objective. Furthermore, we give an introduction into the use of mathematical modeling systems, which are useful tools in a modeling context, especially during the development phases of a mathematical model. Throughput Maximization in Multiprocessor Speed-Scaling
We are given a set of jobs that have to be executed on a set of
speed-scalable machines that can vary their speeds dynamically using the energy
model introduced in [Yao et al., FOCS'95]. Every job is characterized by
its release date , its deadline , its processing volume if
is executed on machine and its weight . We are also given a budget
of energy and our objective is to maximize the weighted throughput, i.e.
the total weight of jobs that are completed between their respective release
dates and deadlines. We propose a polynomial-time approximation algorithm where
the preemption of the jobs is allowed but not their migration. Our algorithm
uses a primal-dual approach on a linearized version of a convex program with
linear constraints. Furthermore, we present two optimal algorithms for the
non-preemptive case where the number of machines is bounded by a fixed
constant. More specifically, we consider: {\em (a)} the case of identical
processing volumes, i.e. for every and , for which we
present a polynomial-time algorithm for the unweighted version, which becomes a
pseudopolynomial-time algorithm for the weighted throughput version, and {\em
(b)} the case of agreeable instances, i.e. for which if and only
if , for which we present a pseudopolynomial-time algorithm. Both
algorithms are based on a discretization of the problem and the use of dynamic
programming
