Logical Approach to Natural Language Understanding in a Spoken Dialogue System
International audienceWe present a logical approach of spoken language understanding for a human-machine dialogue system. The aim of the analysis is to provide a logical formula, or a conceptual graph, by assembling concepts related to a delimited application domain. This flexible structure is gradually built during an incremental parsing, which is meant to combine syntactic and semantic criteria. Combining Expression and Content in Domains for Dialog Managers
We present work in progress on abstracting dialog managers from their domain
in order to implement a dialog manager development tool which takes (among
other data) a domain description as input and delivers a new dialog manager for
the described domain as output. Thereby we will focus on two topics; firstly,
the construction of domain descriptions with description logics and secondly,

Robust Grammatical Analysis for Spoken Dialogue Systems
We argue that grammatical analysis is a viable alternative to concept
spotting for processing spoken input in a practical spoken dialogue system. We
discuss the structure of the grammar, and a model for robust parsing which
combines linguistic sources of information and statistical sources of
information. We discuss test results suggesting that grammatical processing

Building a robust dialogue system with limited data
We describe robustness techniques used in the CommandTalk system at the recognition level, the parsing level, and th dia6ue level, and how these were influenced by the lack of domain data. We used interviews with subject matter experts (SME's) to develop a single grammar for recognition, understanding, and generation, thus eliminating the need for a robust parser. We broadened the coverage of the recognition grammar by allowing word insertions and deletions, and we implemented clarification and correction subdialogues to increase robustness at tte dialogue level. We discuss the applicability of these techniques to other domains
Evaluation of the NLP Components of the OVIS2 Spoken Dialogue System
The NWO Priority Programme Language and Speech Technology is a 5-year
research programme aiming at the development of spoken language information
systems. In the Programme, two alternative natural language processing (NLP)
modules are developed in parallel: a grammar-based (conventional, rule-based)
module and a data-oriented (memory-based, stochastic, DOP) module. In order to
compare the NLP modules, a formal evaluation has been carried out three years
after the start of the Programme. This paper describes the evaluation procedure
and the evaluation results. The grammar-based component performs much better
