    Succinct Partial Sums and Fenwick Trees

    We consider the well-studied partial sums problem in succint space where one is to maintain an array of n k-bit integers subject to updates such that partial sums queries can be efficiently answered. We present two succint versions of the Fenwick Tree - which is known for its simplicity and practicality. Our results hold in the encoding model where one is allowed to reuse the space from the input data. Our main result is the first that only requires nk + o(n) bits of space while still supporting sum/update in O(log_b n) / O(b log_b n) time where 2 <= b <= log^O(1) n. The second result shows how optimal time for sum/update can be achieved while only slightly increasing the space usage to nk + o(nk) bits. Beyond Fenwick Trees, the results are primarily based on bit-packing and sampling - making them very practical - and they also allow for simple optimal parallelization

    Optimal decremental connectivity in planar graphs

    We show an algorithm for dynamic maintenance of connectivity information in an undirected planar graph subject to edge deletions. Our algorithm may answer connectivity queries of the form `Are vertices uu and vv connected with a path?' in constant time. The queries can be intermixed with any sequence of edge deletions, and the algorithm handles all updates in O(n)O(n) time. This results improves over previously known O(nlog⁥n)O(n \log n) time algorithm

    Time lower bounds for nonadaptive turnstile streaming algorithms

    We say a turnstile streaming algorithm is "non-adaptive" if, during updates, the memory cells written and read depend only on the index being updated and random coins tossed at the beginning of the stream (and not on the memory contents of the algorithm). Memory cells read during queries may be decided upon adaptively. All known turnstile streaming algorithms in the literature are non-adaptive. We prove the first non-trivial update time lower bounds for both randomized and deterministic turnstile streaming algorithms, which hold when the algorithms are non-adaptive. While there has been abundant success in proving space lower bounds, there have been no non-trivial update time lower bounds in the turnstile model. Our lower bounds hold against classically studied problems such as heavy hitters, point query, entropy estimation, and moment estimation. In some cases of deterministic algorithms, our lower bounds nearly match known upper bounds

    Faster Worst Case Deterministic Dynamic Connectivity

    We present a deterministic dynamic connectivity data structure for undirected graphs with worst case update time O(n(log⁥log⁥n)2log⁥n)O\left(\sqrt{\frac{n(\log\log n)^2}{\log n}}\right) and constant query time. This improves on the previous best deterministic worst case algorithm of Frederickson (STOC 1983) and Eppstein Galil, Italiano, and Nissenzweig (J. ACM 1997), which had update time O(n)O(\sqrt{n}). All other algorithms for dynamic connectivity are either randomized (Monte Carlo) or have only amortized performance guarantees

    Interconnection network with a shared whiteboard: Impact of (a)synchronicity on computing power

    In this work we study the computational power of graph-based models of distributed computing in which each node additionally has access to a global whiteboard. A node can read the contents of the whiteboard and, when activated, can write one message of O(log n) bits on it. When the protocol terminates, each node computes the output based on the final contents of the whiteboard. We consider several scheduling schemes for nodes, providing a strict ordering of their power in terms of the problems which can be solved with exactly one activation per node. The problems used to separate the models are related to Maximal Independent Set, detection of cycles of length 4, and BFS spanning tree constructions
