Indoor localization of a mobile robot using sensor fusion : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering in Mechatronics with Honours at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand
Reliable indoor navigation of mobile robots has been a popular research topic in recent years. GPS systems used for outdoor mobile robot navigation can not be used indoor (warehouse, hospital or other buildings) because it requires an unobstructed view of the sky. Therefore a specially designed indoor localization system for mobile robot is needed. This project aims to develop a reliable position and heading angle estimator for real time indoor localization of mobile robots. Two different techniques have been developed and each consisted of three different sensor modules based on infrared sensing, calibrated odometry and calibrated gyroscope. Integration of these three sensor modules is achieved by applying the real time Kalman filter which provides filtered and reliable information of a mobile robot's current location and orientation relative to its environment. Extensive experimental results are provided to demonstrate its improvement over conventional methods like dead reckoning. In addition, a control strategy is developed to control the mobile robot to move along the planned trajectory. The techniques developed in this project have potentials for the application for mobile robots in medical service, health care, surveillances, search and rescue in indoor environments
Indoor Localization of Mobile Robots with Wireless Sensor Network Based on Ultra Wideband using Experimental Measurements of Time Difference of Arrival
This paper presents investigations into wireless localization techniques for mobile robots operating in indoor environments. Localization systems can guide robots to perform
different tasks such as monitoring children or elderly people, aid mobility of the visually impaired and localize mobile objects or packages in warehouses. They are essential for localization of robots operating in re-mote places that are inaccessible or hazardous to humans. Currently, ultra wide band (UWB) in indoor environments provides an accuracy of 24 mm under line of sight (LOS) or non-line of sight (NLOS) conditions in a working
range of 160 m indoors. The work presented in this paper carries out experimental validation of localization algorithms using mobile robots and UWB signals. These are measured in LOS and NLOS environments. The measurements are performed with the
UWB radio PulsON 410 (P410) and mobile robots (AmigoBot) with maximum travel-ling speed of 1 m/s and equipped with an on-board computer, sonar, odometer, camera and inertial
navigation system. Experimental results obtained for the system show positioning errors of less than 55 mm
Appearance-based localization for mobile robots using digital zoom and visual compass
This paper describes a localization system for mobile robots moving in dynamic indoor environments, which uses probabilistic integration of visual appearance and odometry information. The approach is based on a novel image matching algorithm for appearance-based place recognition that integrates digital zooming, to extend the area of application, and a visual compass. Ambiguous information used for recognizing places is resolved with multiple hypothesis tracking and a selection procedure inspired by Markov localization. This enables the system to deal with perceptual aliasing or absence of reliable sensor data. It has been implemented on a robot operating in an office scenario and the robustness of the approach demonstrated experimentally
Infrastructure-Aided Localization and State Estimation for Autonomous Mobile Robots
A slip-aware localization framework is proposed for mobile robots experiencing wheel slip in dynamic environments. The framework fuses infrastructure-aided visual tracking data (via fisheye lenses) and proprioceptive sensory data from a skid-steer mobile robot to enhance accuracy and reduce variance of the estimated states. The slip-aware localization framework includes: the visual thread to detect and track the robot in the stereo image through computationally efficient 3D point cloud generation using a region of interest; and the ego motion thread which uses a slip-aware odometry mechanism to estimate the robot pose utilizing a motion model considering wheel slip. Covariance intersection is used to fuse the pose prediction (using proprioceptive data) and the visual thread, such that the updated estimate remains consistent. As confirmed by experiments on a skid-steer mobile robot, the designed localization framework addresses state estimation challenges for indoor/outdoor autonomous mobile robots which experience high-slip, uneven torque distribution at each wheel (by the motion planner), or occlusion when observed by an infrastructure-mounted camera. The proposed system is real-time capable and scalable to multiple robots and multiple environmental cameras

Towards Odor-Sensitive Mobile Robots
J. Monroy, J. Gonzalez-Jimenez, "Towards Odor-Sensitive Mobile Robots", Electronic Nose Technologies and Advances in Machine Olfaction, IGI Global, pp. 244--263, 2018, doi:10.4018/978-1-5225-3862-2.ch012
Versión preprint, con permiso del editorOut of all the components of a mobile robot, its sensorial system is undoubtedly among the most critical
ones when operating in real environments. Until now, these sensorial systems mostly relied on range
sensors (laser scanner, sonar, active triangulation) and cameras. While electronic noses have barely
been employed, they can provide a complementary sensory information, vital for some applications, as
with humans. This chapter analyzes the motivation of providing a robot with gas-sensing capabilities
and also reviews some of the hurdles that are preventing smell from achieving the importance of other
sensing modalities in robotics. The achievements made so far are reviewed to illustrate the current status
on the three main fields within robotics olfaction: the classification of volatile substances, the spatial
estimation of the gas dispersion from sparse measurements, and the localization of the gas source within
a known environment
Conceptual spatial representations for indoor mobile robots
We present an approach for creating conceptual representations of human-made indoor environments using mobile
robots. The concepts refer to spatial and functional properties of typical indoor environments. Following findings
in cognitive psychology, our model is composed of layers representing maps at different levels of abstraction. The
complete system is integrated in a mobile robot endowed with laser and vision sensors for place and object recognition.
The system also incorporates a linguistic framework that actively supports the map acquisition process, and which
is used for situated dialogue. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the integrated system
Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Position Estimation of Robotic Mobile Nodes in Wireless Testbed using GENI
We present a low complexity experimental RF-based indoor localization system
based on the collection and processing of WiFi RSSI signals and processing
using a RSS-based multi-lateration algorithm to determine a robotic mobile
node's location. We use a real indoor wireless testbed called w-iLab.t that is
deployed in Zwijnaarde, Ghent, Belgium. One of the unique attributes of this
testbed is that it provides tools and interfaces using Global Environment for
Network Innovations (GENI) project to easily create reproducible wireless
network experiments in a controlled environment. We provide a low complexity
algorithm to estimate the location of the mobile robots in the indoor
environment. In addition, we provide a comparison between some of our collected
measurements with their corresponding location estimation and the actual robot
location. The comparison shows an accuracy between 0.65 and 5 meters.Comment: (c) 2016 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted. Permission
