A Machine Learning Approach For Opinion Holder Extraction In Arabic Language
Opinion mining aims at extracting useful subjective information from reliable
amounts of text. Opinion mining holder recognition is a task that has not been
considered yet in Arabic Language. This task essentially requires deep
understanding of clauses structures. Unfortunately, the lack of a robust,
publicly available, Arabic parser further complicates the research. This paper
presents a leading research for the opinion holder extraction in Arabic news
independent from any lexical parsers. We investigate constructing a
comprehensive feature set to compensate the lack of parsing structural
outcomes. The proposed feature set is tuned from English previous works coupled
with our proposed semantic field and named entities features. Our feature
analysis is based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF) and semi-supervised
pattern recognition techniques. Different research models are evaluated via
cross-validation experiments achieving 54.03 F-measure. We publicly release our
own research outcome corpus and lexicon for opinion mining community to
encourage further research
Universal, Unsupervised (Rule-Based), Uncovered Sentiment Analysis
We present a novel unsupervised approach for multilingual sentiment analysis
driven by compositional syntax-based rules. On the one hand, we exploit some of
the main advantages of unsupervised algorithms: (1) the interpretability of
their output, in contrast with most supervised models, which behave as a black
box and (2) their robustness across different corpora and domains. On the other
hand, by introducing the concept of compositional operations and exploiting
syntactic information in the form of universal dependencies, we tackle one of
their main drawbacks: their rigidity on data that are structured differently
depending on the language concerned. Experiments show an improvement both over
existing unsupervised methods, and over state-of-the-art supervised models when
evaluating outside their corpus of origin. Experiments also show how the same
compositional operations can be shared across languages. The system is

Computational Controversy
Climate change, vaccination, abortion, Trump: Many topics are surrounded by
fierce controversies. The nature of such heated debates and their elements have
been studied extensively in the social science literature. More recently,
various computational approaches to controversy analysis have appeared, using
new data sources such as Wikipedia, which help us now better understand these
phenomena. However, compared to what social sciences have discovered about such
debates, the existing computational approaches mostly focus on just a few of
the many important aspects around the concept of controversies. In order to
link the two strands, we provide and evaluate here a controversy model that is
both, rooted in the findings of the social science literature and at the same
time strongly linked to computational methods. We show how this model can lead
to computational controversy analytics that have full coverage over all the
crucial aspects that make up a controversy.Comment: In Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Social

Econometrics meets sentiment : an overview of methodology and applications
The advent of massive amounts of textual, audio, and visual data has spurred the development of econometric methodology to transform qualitative sentiment data into quantitative sentiment variables, and to use those variables in an econometric analysis of the relationships between sentiment and other variables. We survey this emerging research field and refer to it as sentometrics, which is a portmanteau of sentiment and econometrics. We provide a synthesis of the relevant methodological approaches, illustrate with empirical results, and discuss useful software
