EASe : integrating search with learned episodes
Weak methods are insufficient to solve complex problems. Constrained weak methods, like hill-climbing, search too little of the problem space. Unconstrained weak methods, like breadth-first search, are intractable. Fortunately, through the integration of multiple weak methods more powerful problem solvers can be created. We demonstrate that augmenting a weak constrained search method with episodes provides a tractable method for solving a large class of problems. We demonstrate that these episodes can be generated using an unconstrained weak method while solving simple problems from a domain. We provide an analytical model of our approach and empirical results from the logic synthesis domain of VLSI design as well as the classic tile-sliding domain
A methodology for airplane parameter estimation and confidence interval determination in nonlinear estimation problems
An algorithm for maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is developed with an efficient method for approximating the sensitivities. The ML algorithm relies on a new optimization method referred to as a modified Newton-Raphson with estimated sensitivities (MNRES). MNRES determines sensitivities by using slope information from local surface approximations of each output variable in parameter space. With the fitted surface, sensitivity information can be updated at each iteration with less computational effort than that required by either a finite-difference method or integration of the analytically determined sensitivity equations. MNRES eliminates the need to derive sensitivity equations for each new model, and thus provides flexibility to use model equations in any convenient format. A random search technique for determining the confidence limits of ML parameter estimates is applied to nonlinear estimation problems for airplanes. The confidence intervals obtained by the search are compared with Cramer-Rao (CR) bounds at the same confidence level. The degree of nonlinearity in the estimation problem is an important factor in the relationship between CR bounds and the error bounds determined by the search technique. Beale's measure of nonlinearity is developed in this study for airplane identification problems; it is used to empirically correct confidence levels and to predict the degree of agreement between CR bounds and search estimates

Optimization Methods for Inverse Problems
Optimization plays an important role in solving many inverse problems.
Indeed, the task of inversion often either involves or is fully cast as a
solution of an optimization problem. In this light, the mere non-linear,
non-convex, and large-scale nature of many of these inversions gives rise to
some very challenging optimization problems. The inverse problem community has
long been developing various techniques for solving such optimization tasks.
However, other, seemingly disjoint communities, such as that of machine
learning, have developed, almost in parallel, interesting alternative methods
which might have stayed under the radar of the inverse problem community. In
this survey, we aim to change that. In doing so, we first discuss current
state-of-the-art optimization methods widely used in inverse problems. We then
survey recent related advances in addressing similar challenges in problems
faced by the machine learning community, and discuss their potential advantages
for solving inverse problems. By highlighting the similarities among the
optimization challenges faced by the inverse problem and the machine learning
communities, we hope that this survey can serve as a bridge in bringing
together these two communities and encourage cross fertilization of ideas.Comment: 13 page
