    "What's (the) Matter?", A Show on Elementary Particle Physics with 28 Demonstration Experiments

    We present the screenplay of a physics show on particle physics, by the Physikshow of Bonn University. The show is addressed at non-physicists aged 14+ and communicates basic concepts of elementary particle physics including the discovery of the Higgs boson in an entertaining fashion. It is also demonstrates a successful outreach activity heavily relying on the university physics students. This paper is addressed at anybody interested in particle physics and/or show physics. This paper is also addressed at fellow physicists working in outreach, maybe the experiments and our choice of simple explanations will be helpful. Furthermore, we are very interested in related activities elsewhere, in particular also demonstration experiments relevant to particle physics, as often little of this work is published. Our show involves 28 live demonstration experiments. These are presented in an extensive appendix, including photos and technical details. The show is set up as a quest, where 2 students from Bonn with the aid of a caretaker travel back in time to understand the fundamental nature of matter. They visit Rutherford and Geiger in Manchester around 1911, who recount their famous experiment on the nucleus and show how particle detectors work. They travel forward in time to meet Lawrence at Berkeley around 1950, teaching them about the how and why of accelerators. Next, they visit Wu at DESY, Hamburg, around 1980, who explains the strong force. They end up in the LHC tunnel at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland in 2012. Two experimentalists tell them about colliders and our heroes watch live as the Higgs boson is produced and decays. The show was presented in English at Oxford University and University College London, as well as Padua University and ICTP Trieste. It was 1st performed in German at the Deutsche Museum, Bonn (5/'14). The show has eleven speaking parts and involves in total 20 people.Comment: 113 pages, 88 figures.     Structured and Unstructured Binding of an Intrinsically Disordered Protein as Revealed by Atomistic Simulations

    Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) are a set of proteins that lack a definite secondary structure in solution. IDPs can acquire tertiary structure when bound to their partners; therefore, the recognition process must also involve protein folding. The nature of the transition state (TS), structured or unstructured, determines the binding mechanism. The characterization of the TS has become a major challenge for experimental techniques and molecular simulations approaches since diffusion, recognition, and binding is coupled to folding. In this work we present atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that sample the free energy surface of the coupled folding and binding of the transcription factor c-myb to the cotranscription factor CREB binding protein (CBP). This process has been recently studied and became a model to study IDPs. Despite the plethora of available information, we still do not know how c-myb binds to CBP. We performed a set of atomistic biased MD simulations running a total of 15.6 μs. Our results show that c-myb folds very fast upon binding to CBP with no unique pathway for binding. The process can proceed through both structured or unstructured TS's with similar probabilities. This finding reconciles previous seemingly different experimental results. We also performed Go-type coarse-grained MD of several structured and unstructured models that indicate that coupled folding and binding follows a native contact mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first atomistic MD simulation that samples the free energy surface of the coupled folding and binding processes of IDPs.Fil: Ithuralde, Raúl Esteban.     Using Unmanned Aerial Systems for Deriving Forest Stand Characteristics in Mixed Hardwoods of West Virginia

    Forest inventory information is a principle driver for forest management decisions. Information gathered through these inventories provides a summary of the condition of forested stands. The method by which remote sensing aids land managers is changing rapidly. Imagery produced from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offer high temporal and spatial resolutions to small-scale forest management. UAS imagery is less expensive and easier to coordinate to meet project needs compared to traditional manned aerial imagery. This study focused on producing an efficient and approachable work flow for producing forest stand board volume estimates from UAS imagery in mixed hardwood stands of West Virginia. A supplementary aim of this project was to evaluate which season was best to collect imagery for forest inventory. True color imagery was collected with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional UAS and was processed in Agisoft Photoscan Professional. Automated tree crown segmentation was performed with Trimble eCognition Developer’s multi-resolution segmentation function with manual optimization of parameters through an iterative process. Individual tree volume metrics were derived from field data relationships and volume estimates were processed in EZ CRUZ forest inventory software. The software, at best, correctly segmented 43% of the individual tree crowns. No correlation between season of imagery acquisition and quality of segmentation was shown. Volume and other stand characteristics were not accurately estimated and were faulted by poor segmentation. However, the imagery was able to capture gaps consistently and provide a visualization of forest health. Difficulties, successes and time required for these procedures were thoroughly noted

    Signs of Morality in David Bowie's "Black Star" Video Clip

    “Black Star” music video was released two days before Bowie’s death. It bears various implications of dying and the notion of mortality is both literal and metaphorical. It is highly autobiographical and serves as a theatrical stage for Bowie to act both as a music performer and as a self-conscious human being. In this paper, we discuss the signs of mortality in Bowie’s “Black Star” music video-clip. We focus on video’s cinematic techniques and codes, on its motivic elements and on its narrative in relation with music, lyrics, characters, and gestures. We also discuss the video’s intertextual references and the broader signification of the black star figure. We adopt a quasi-semiotic approach considering “Black Star” music video-clip as a text which can be investigated through its signs, codes, and conventions of the musical, visual, and cinematic languages as well. Our interdisciplinary tools derive from visual semiotics and audiovisual analysis models, without leaving outside Bowie’s musical-artistic and personal history. As it turns out, Bowie created a video clip that is philosophical in nature and poetic in structure, preserving the role of protagonist. With the visuals creating a psychedelic atmosphere, the lyrics often are heard as a personal confession. They both generate cognitive and emotional responses that influence the way the viewers-listeners may experience, decompose, and interpret Bowie’s artistic endeavor bridging life and death

    Snow started to fall inexplicably on a noisy night just before Halloween, as I left The Place after a single night performance of La Bambola di Carne, part of the 2008 London International Festival of Contemporary Dance. Organized by Dance Umbrella, this year’s festival featured twenty-one different productions by well known companies (including Merce Cunningham, Richard Alston, Mark Morris, O Vertigo, Stephen Petronio and Batsheva Dance Company) as well as other establishedand emerging choreographers or solo artists from Europe and overseas. Letizia Renzini was introduced to the festival as the creator of La Bambola di Carne, credited with direction, video composition, sound, and live performance, while her partner Marina Giovannini danced the major role in the piece and was responsible for the choreography
