A Java based simulation for basic control
7th IFAC Symposium on Advances in Control Education 21/06/2006 MadridIn this paper we present a java based simulator for control education in basiccourses. The application has been developed using the well known tool Easy JavaSimulation.The objective of the application is to help the student to learn the design of classiccontrollers such as P,PI, PID, etc testing the tuning procedures to control the position ofan antenna controlled by a DC motor. Thus the application allows the student to choosethe parameters of the antenna and the DC motor, to choose the controller to be used andits parameters and finally to simulate the closed loop system observing the evolution ofthe signals as well as a 3-D view. Furthermore, in order to show the real behavior of thesystem, dead zone, saturation, disturbances and non-linearities can be added to the model.This application has been used by the authors to teach a basic control course at EscuelaSuperior de Ingenieros (University of Seville) as virtual laboratory.Moreover, since the application is java based, this can be used by the students from theauthors’ web pages and this can also be installed in the student’s laptop (whichever theplatform is) by downloading it from the authors web page (Limon and Salas, 2003Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂa DPI2004-07444Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂa DPI2003-0042

I Thought the Earth Remembered Me
The forest is teeming with activity: fungi transform dead logs into nutrients, roots entangle themselves with the earth, and strong winds break resilient boughs. Like the forest, the human body functions according to a complex system of agents - from the micro bacteria in the gut to the pores of the skin. The built world has often been rendered in opposition to these processes of nature. As a vessel through which the world is experienced, the body is an intermediary between raw matter and fabricated things. The planet is suffused with human life, and there is a critical tension between human production and the well-being of the biosphere. Is there an ecological benefit to dissolving the division between the human-made and the organic? My exhibition, I Thought the Earth Remembered Me, integrates the ambiguous forms of the forest into mass-produced sheetrock walls in order to break down the boundary between the built and natural world. Through making, I hope the work unearths a way to be enchanted on a damaged planet
Linear Relationship Statistics in Diffusion Limited Aggregation
We show that various surface parameters in two-dimensional diffusion limited
aggregation (DLA) grow linearly with the number of particles. We find the ratio
of the average length of the perimeter and the accessible perimeter of a DLA
cluster together with its external perimeters to the cluster size, and define a
microscopic schematic procedure for attachment of an incident new particle to
the cluster. We measure the fractal dimension of the red sites (i.e., the sites
upon cutting each of them splits the cluster) equal to that of the DLA cluster.
It is also shown that the average number of the dead sites and the average
number of the red sites have linear relationships with the cluster size.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Playing with the dead:transmedia narratives and the Walking Dead games
This chapter discusses the theory and practice of transmedia narratives within the storyworld created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard’s comics series The Walking Dead. It examines key aspects from the comics series and AMC’s adaptive television franchise to consider how both have been utilized and adapted for games. Particular focus will be paid to Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, Gamagio’s The Walking Dead Assault and Terminal Reality’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. The chapter explains the core concepts of transmedia narratives as they relate to The Walking Dead, places the games in the context of both the comics and television franchise, examines the significance of commercial and grassroot extensions and considers the role gaming and interactive narratives have within rich storyworlds. In examining The Walking Dead as a transmedia property, the authors demonstrate how vast narratives are adopted, modified and transformed in contemporary popular culture
Cellular automaton for bacterial towers
A simulation approach to the stochastic growth of bacterial towers is
presented, in which a non-uniform and finite nutrient supply essentially
determines the emerging structure through elementary chemotaxis. The method is
based on cellular automata and we use simple, microscopic, local rules for
bacterial division in nutrient-rich surroundings. Stochastic nutrient
diffusion, while not crucial to the dynamics of the total population, is
influential in determining the porosity of the bacterial tower and the
roughness of its surface. As the bacteria run out of food, we observe an
exponentially rapid saturation to a carrying capacity distribution, similar in
many respects to that found in a recently proposed phenomenological
hierarchical population model, which uses heuristic parameters and macroscopic
rules. Complementary to that phenomenological model, the simulation aims at
giving more microscopic insight into the possible mechanisms for one of the
recently much studied bacterial morphotypes, known as "towering biofilm",
observed experimentally using confocal laser microscopy. A simulation
