    Robotic swarm control from spatio-temporal specifications

    In this paper, we study the problem of controlling a two-dimensional robotic swarm with the purpose of achieving high level and complex spatio-temporal patterns. We use a rich spatio-temporal logic that is capable of describing a wide range of time varying and complex spatial configurations, and develop a method to encode such formal specifications as a set of mixed integer linear constraints, which are incorporated into a mixed integer linear programming problem. We plan trajectories for each individual robot such that the whole swarm satisfies the spatio-temporal requirements, while optimizing total robot movement and/or a metric that shows how strongly the swarm trajectory resembles given spatio-temporal behaviors.     Adaptive and learning-based formation control of swarm robots

    Autonomous aerial and wheeled mobile robots play a major role in tasks such as search and rescue, transportation, monitoring, and inspection. However, these operations are faced with a few open challenges including robust autonomy, and adaptive coordination based on the environment and operating conditions, particularly in swarm robots with limited communication and perception capabilities. Furthermore, the computational complexity increases exponentially with the number of robots in the swarm. This thesis examines two different aspects of the formation control problem. On the one hand, we investigate how formation could be performed by swarm robots with limited communication and perception (e.g., Crazyflie nano quadrotor). On the other hand, we explore human-swarm interaction (HSI) and different shared-control mechanisms between human and swarm robots (e.g., BristleBot) for artistic creation. In particular, we combine bio-inspired (i.e., flocking, foraging) techniques with learning-based control strategies (using artificial neural networks) for adaptive control of multi- robots. We first review how learning-based control and networked dynamical systems can be used to assign distributed and decentralized policies to individual robots such that the desired formation emerges from their collective behavior. We proceed by presenting a novel flocking control for UAV swarm using deep reinforcement learning. We formulate the flocking formation problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), and consider a leader-follower configuration, where consensus among all UAVs is used to train a shared control policy, and each UAV performs actions based on the local information it collects. In addition, to avoid collision among UAVs and guarantee flocking and navigation, a reward function is added with the global flocking maintenance, mutual reward, and a collision penalty. We adapt deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) with centralized training and decentralized execution to obtain the flocking control policy using actor-critic networks and a global state space matrix. In the context of swarm robotics in arts, we investigate how the formation paradigm can serve as an interaction modality for artists to aesthetically utilize swarms. In particular, we explore particle swarm optimization (PSO) and random walk to control the communication between a team of robots with swarming behavior for musical creation

    Simulation Platform for the Evaluation of Robotic Swarm Algorithms

    One major problem in the development of robotic swarms is the slow process of testing. Testing different algorithms or variations of a single one using physical robots requires reprogramming every robot in the swarm before every run. Hence, the speed at which a robotic swarm can be tested is highly dependent on the time taken to reprogram the entire swarm and the physical speed at which the swarm operates. This paper details the development of a computer-based simulation platform for rapid development and testing of swarm-intelligence algorithms in an effort to mitigate the current bottleneck imposed by testing. The simulator uses an object-oriented programming environment to facilitate the implementation and modification of swarm algorithms. Simulation of food foraging in an ant-hill scenario is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the simulator

    Modelling and analyzing adaptive self-assembling strategies with Maude

    Building adaptive systems with predictable emergent behavior is a challenging task and it is becoming a critical need. The research community has accepted the challenge by introducing approaches of various nature: from software architectures, to programming paradigms, to analysis techniques. We recently proposed a conceptual framework for adaptation centered around the role of control data. In this paper we show that it can be naturally realized in a reflective logical language like Maude by using the Reflective Russian Dolls model. Moreover, we exploit this model to specify, validate and analyse a prominent example of adaptive system: robot swarms equipped with self-assembly strategies.     Sparse robot swarms: Moving swarms to real-world applications

    Robot swarms are groups of robots that each act autonomously based on only local perception and coordination with neighbouring robots. While current swarm implementations can be large in size (e.g. 1000 robots), they are typically constrained to working in highly controlled indoor environments. Moreover, a common property of swarms is the underlying assumption that the robots act in close proximity of each other (e.g. 10 body lengths apart), and typically employ uninterrupted, situated, close-range communication for coordination. Many real-world applications, including environmental monitoring and precision agriculture, however, require scalable groups of robots to act jointly over large distances (e.g. 1000 body lengths), rendering the use of dense swarms impractical. Using a dense swarm for such applications would be invasive to the environment and unrealistic in terms of mission deployment, maintenance and post-mission recovery. To address this problem, we propose the sparse swarm concept, and illustrate its use in the context of four application scenarios. For one scenario, which requires a group of rovers to traverse, and monitor, a forest environment, we identify the challenges involved at all levels in developing a sparse swarm—from the hardware platform to communication-constrained coordination algorithms—and discuss potential solutions. We outline open questions of theoretical and practical nature, which we hope will bring the concept of sparse swarms to fruition
