The Shape of Art History in the Eyes of the Machine
How does the machine classify styles in art? And how does it relate to art
historians' methods for analyzing style? Several studies have shown the ability
of the machine to learn and predict style categories, such as Renaissance,
Baroque, Impressionism, etc., from images of paintings. This implies that the
machine can learn an internal representation encoding discriminative features
through its visual analysis. However, such a representation is not necessarily
interpretable. We conducted a comprehensive study of several of the
state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks applied to the task of style
classification on 77K images of paintings, and analyzed the learned
representation through correlation analysis with concepts derived from art
history. Surprisingly, the networks could place the works of art in a smooth
temporal arrangement mainly based on learning style labels, without any a
priori knowledge of time of creation, the historical time and context of
styles, or relations between styles. The learned representations showed that
there are few underlying factors that explain the visual variations of style in
art. Some of these factors were found to correlate with style patterns
suggested by Heinrich W\"olfflin (1846-1945). The learned representations also
consistently highlighted certain artists as the extreme distinctive
representative of their styles, which quantitatively confirms art historian
observations
Extrinsic Methods for Coding and Dictionary Learning on Grassmann Manifolds
Sparsity-based representations have recently led to notable results in
various visual recognition tasks. In a separate line of research, Riemannian
manifolds have been shown useful for dealing with features and models that do
not lie in Euclidean spaces. With the aim of building a bridge between the two
realms, we address the problem of sparse coding and dictionary learning over
the space of linear subspaces, which form Riemannian structures known as
Grassmann manifolds. To this end, we propose to embed Grassmann manifolds into
the space of symmetric matrices by an isometric mapping. This in turn enables
us to extend two sparse coding schemes to Grassmann manifolds. Furthermore, we
propose closed-form solutions for learning a Grassmann dictionary, atom by
atom. Lastly, to handle non-linearity in data, we extend the proposed Grassmann
sparse coding and dictionary learning algorithms through embedding into Hilbert
spaces.
Experiments on several classification tasks (gender recognition, gesture
classification, scene analysis, face recognition, action recognition and
dynamic texture classification) show that the proposed approaches achieve
considerable improvements in discrimination accuracy, in comparison to
state-of-the-art methods such as kernelized Affine Hull Method and

End-to-End Kernel Learning with Supervised Convolutional Kernel Networks
In this paper, we introduce a new image representation based on a multilayer
kernel machine. Unlike traditional kernel methods where data representation is
decoupled from the prediction task, we learn how to shape the kernel with
supervision. We proceed by first proposing improvements of the
recently-introduced convolutional kernel networks (CKNs) in the context of
unsupervised learning; then, we derive backpropagation rules to take advantage
of labeled training data. The resulting model is a new type of convolutional
neural network, where optimizing the filters at each layer is equivalent to
learning a linear subspace in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). We
show that our method achieves reasonably competitive performance for image
classification on some standard "deep learning" datasets such as CIFAR-10 and
SVHN, and also for image super-resolution, demonstrating the applicability of

Proceedings of the second "international Traveling Workshop on Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST'14)
The implicit objective of the biennial "international - Traveling Workshop on
Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST) is to foster
collaboration between international scientific teams by disseminating ideas
through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions. For its
second edition, the iTWIST workshop took place in the medieval and picturesque
town of Namur in Belgium, from Wednesday August 27th till Friday August 29th,
2014. The workshop was conveniently located in "The Arsenal" building within
walking distance of both hotels and town center. iTWIST'14 has gathered about
70 international participants and has featured 9 invited talks, 10 oral
presentations, and 14 posters on the following themes, all related to the
theory, application and generalization of the "sparsity paradigm":
Sparsity-driven data sensing and processing; Union of low dimensional
subspaces; Beyond linear and convex inverse problem; Matrix/manifold/graph
sensing/processing; Blind inverse problems and dictionary learning; Sparsity
