Basic tasks of sentiment analysis
Subjectivity detection is the task of identifying objective and subjective
sentences. Objective sentences are those which do not exhibit any sentiment.
So, it is desired for a sentiment analysis engine to find and separate the
objective sentences for further analysis, e.g., polarity detection. In
subjective sentences, opinions can often be expressed on one or multiple
topics. Aspect extraction is a subtask of sentiment analysis that consists in
identifying opinion targets in opinionated text, i.e., in detecting the
specific aspects of a product or service the opinion holder is either praising
or complaining about
Detection of Review Abuse via Semi-Supervised Binary Multi-Target Tensor Decomposition
Product reviews and ratings on e-commerce websites provide customers with
detailed insights about various aspects of the product such as quality,
usefulness, etc. Since they influence customers' buying decisions, product
reviews have become a fertile ground for abuse by sellers (colluding with
reviewers) to promote their own products or to tarnish the reputation of
competitor's products. In this paper, our focus is on detecting such abusive
entities (both sellers and reviewers) by applying tensor decomposition on the
product reviews data. While tensor decomposition is mostly unsupervised, we
formulate our problem as a semi-supervised binary multi-target tensor
decomposition, to take advantage of currently known abusive entities. We
empirically show that our multi-target semi-supervised model achieves higher
precision and recall in detecting abusive entities as compared to unsupervised
techniques. Finally, we show that our proposed stochastic partial natural
gradient inference for our model empirically achieves faster convergence than

Detecting Singleton Review Spammers Using Semantic Similarity
Online reviews have increasingly become a very important resource for
consumers when making purchases. Though it is becoming more and more difficult
for people to make well-informed buying decisions without being deceived by
fake reviews. Prior works on the opinion spam problem mostly considered
classifying fake reviews using behavioral user patterns. They focused on
prolific users who write more than a couple of reviews, discarding one-time
reviewers. The number of singleton reviewers however is expected to be high for
many review websites. While behavioral patterns are effective when dealing with
elite users, for one-time reviewers, the review text needs to be exploited. In
this paper we tackle the problem of detecting fake reviews written by the same
person using multiple names, posting each review under a different name. We
propose two methods to detect similar reviews and show the results generally
outperform the vectorial similarity measures used in prior works. The first
method extends the semantic similarity between words to the reviews level. The
second method is based on topic modeling and exploits the similarity of the
reviews topic distributions using two models: bag-of-words and
bag-of-opinion-phrases. The experiments were conducted on reviews from three
different datasets: Yelp (57K reviews), Trustpilot (9K reviews) and Ott dataset

Detecting and Monitoring Hate Speech in Twitter
Social Media are sensors in the real world that can be used to measure the pulse of societies.
However, the massive and unfiltered feed of messages posted in social media is a phenomenon that
nowadays raises social alarms, especially when these messages contain hate speech targeted to a
specific individual or group. In this context, governments and non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) are concerned about the possible negative impact that these messages can have on individuals
or on the society. In this paper, we present HaterNet, an intelligent system currently being used by
the Spanish National Office Against Hate Crimes of the Spanish State Secretariat for Security that
identifies and monitors the evolution of hate speech in Twitter. The contributions of this research
are many-fold: (1) It introduces the first intelligent system that monitors and visualizes, using social
network analysis techniques, hate speech in Social Media. (2) It introduces a novel public dataset on
hate speech in Spanish consisting of 6000 expert-labeled tweets. (3) It compares several classification
approaches based on different document representation strategies and text classification models. (4)
The best approach consists of a combination of a LTSM+MLP neural network that takes as input the
tweet’s word, emoji, and expression tokens’ embeddings enriched by the tf-idf, and obtains an area
under the curve (AUC) of 0.828 on our dataset, outperforming previous methods presented in the
