    You Can\u27t Be Creative Anymore : Students Reflect on the Lingering Effects of the Five-Paragraph Essay

    The five-paragraph essay continues to make headlines in composition and pedagogy journals and on teacher listservs. This long-cherished genre has been touted for teaching the basics to writers in college, and teachers often claim that it is the best foundation for solid essay writing. In contrast, there are numerous five-paragraph essay critics who claim that the essay is a “school-created thing” that has no real-world value and persists due to an enshrinement in textbooks as preparation for objective standardized testing. Regardless of the debate, one thing remains: there is little research on the essay from the students’ perspective. This essay uses qualitative research to explore how students have been impacted by this standardized format of writing instruction, and the essay concludes with options for increasing student voices and agency as writers

    The Perspective of College Seniors in ROTC on Becoming a Commissioned Officer

    While there is growing research into Military and Mental health issues, the focus of such research has primarily been restricted to those populations who are retired from Military or who step-down from Active Duty. Following a case study with Reservists, we became aware that mental health issues in the Military Population may potentially stem from concepts involved the initial training phases. With the hypothesis that ROTC Cadets are among the youngest persons engaging in Military training, we approached ROTC Air Force and ROTC Army Cadets who were Seniors by credit at Cedarville University. The Cadets were asked to participate in a face-to-face interview with a researcher, to share their experiences of ROTC and their perspectives on what life as a Commissioned Officer would be like. Participation in the interviews was voluntary, but the Air Force Commander and Army Commander had informed their Cadets that this study had been approved by them and participation was encouraged. Participants included both male and female Cadets from a broad range of academic majors. The interviews were analyzed and six themes emerged:- (a) Being associated with high caliber professionals (b) Balancing military persona with non-military persona (c) Skills and strategies for success in life (d) Personal values (e) Awareness of challenges (f) Impact of training on persona. Overall, the Cadets expressed excitement at the prospect of becoming Commissioned Officers, and pride in being among those who serve their country

    Abstract This paper examines the concept of collegiality and how it can be applied to academic libraries. This includes a definition of what collegiality is, a review of the library literature which describes how other writers have seen this issue, and a discussion of how collegiality can be applied in libraries. This includes an examination of how faculty in a library and faculty on other parts of campus work differently which makes collegiality more important in the library. It also looks at why collegiality is important in academic libraries where librarians work hand-in-hand with support staff and student employees

    Teaching sustainable development in materials science and engineering

    Preparing the next generation of materials scientists and engineers requires more than teaching them knowledge of material properties and behaviors. Materials science and engineering must also take into account materials sustainability in the context of society and the environment, as discussed throughout this issue. Including topics such as sustainability in a materials curriculum is not new. Issues of ethics, costs, and so on have long been an integral part of our education. Although detailed treatment of all such topics cannot be included in a general materials education curriculum, the concepts of sustainable development and the role of materials in a sustainable future can be introduced. Indeed, many materials science programs are beginning to include these topics in their curricula. This article discusses three such programs that the authors have helped design and implement in the United States, each taking a different approach to engaging students in these topics. The intention is not to provide an exhaustive overview of education in sustainable development, but rather to describe a range of strategies that are currently being applied and to raise pertinent issues in materials science education
