Dynamics of Internal Models in Game Players
A new approach for the study of social games and communications is proposed.
Games are simulated between cognitive players who build the opponent's internal
model and decide their next strategy from predictions based on the model. In
this paper, internal models are constructed by the recurrent neural network
(RNN), and the iterated prisoner's dilemma game is performed. The RNN allows us
to express the internal model in a geometrical shape. The complicated
transients of actions are observed before the stable mutually defecting
equilibrium is reached. During the transients, the model shape also becomes
complicated and often experiences chaotic changes. These new chaotic dynamics
of internal models reflect the dynamical and high-dimensional rugged landscape

Model Creation and Equivalence Proofs of Cellular Automata and Artificial Neural Networks
Computational methods and mathematical models have invaded arguably every
scientific discipline forming its own field of research called computational
science. Mathematical models are the theoretical foundation of computational
science. Since Newton's time, differential equations in mathematical models
have been widely and successfully used to describe the macroscopic or global
behaviour of systems. With spatially inhomogeneous, time-varying, local
element-specific, and often non-linear interactions, the dynamics of complex
systems is in contrast more efficiently described by local rules and thus in an
algorithmic and local or microscopic manner. The theory of mathematical
modelling taking into account these characteristics of complex systems has to
be established still. We recently presented a so-called allagmatic method
including a system metamodel to provide a framework for describing, modelling,
simulating, and interpreting complex systems. Implementations of cellular
automata and artificial neural networks were described and created with that
method. Guidance from philosophy were helpful in these first studies focusing
on programming and feasibility. A rigorous mathematical formalism, however, is
still missing. This would not only more precisely describe and define the
system metamodel, it would also further generalise it and with that extend its
reach to formal treatment in applied mathematics and theoretical aspects of
computational science as well as extend its applicability to other mathematical
and computational models such as agent-based models. Here, a mathematical
definition of the system metamodel is provided. Based on the presented
formalism, model creation and equivalence of cellular automata and artificial
neural networks are proved. It thus provides a formal approach for studying the
creation of mathematical models as well as their structural and operational

Soft behaviour modelling of user communities
A soft modelling approach for describing behaviour in on-line user communities is introduced in this work. Behaviour models of individual users in dynamic virtual environments have been described in the literature in terms of timed transition automata; they have various drawbacks. Soft multi/agent behaviour automata are defined and proposed to describe multiple user behaviours and to recognise larger classes of user group histories, such as group histories which contain unexpected behaviours. The notion of deviation from the user community model allows defining a soft parsing process which assesses and evaluates the dynamic behaviour of a group of users interacting in virtual environments, such as e-learning and e-business platforms. The soft automaton model can describe virtually infinite sequences of actions due to multiple users and subject to temporal constraints. Soft measures assess a form of distance of observed behaviours by evaluating the amount of temporal deviation, additional or omitted actions contained in an observed history as well as actions performed by unexpected users. The proposed model allows the soft recognition of user group histories also when the observed actions only partially meet the given behaviour model constraints. This approach is more realistic for real-time user community support systems, concerning standard boolean model recognition, when more than one user model is potentially available, and the extent of deviation from community behaviour models can be used as a guide to generate the system support by anticipation, projection and other known techniques. Experiments based on logs from an e-learning platform and plan compilation of the soft multi-agent behaviour automaton show the expressiveness of the proposed model

Learning to Reach Agreement in a Continuous Ultimatum Game
It is well-known that acting in an individually rational manner, according to
the principles of classical game theory, may lead to sub-optimal solutions in a
class of problems named social dilemmas. In contrast, humans generally do not
have much difficulty with social dilemmas, as they are able to balance personal
benefit and group benefit. As agents in multi-agent systems are regularly
confronted with social dilemmas, for instance in tasks such as resource
allocation, these agents may benefit from the inclusion of mechanisms thought
to facilitate human fairness. Although many of such mechanisms have already
been implemented in a multi-agent systems context, their application is usually
limited to rather abstract social dilemmas with a discrete set of available
strategies (usually two). Given that many real-world examples of social
dilemmas are actually continuous in nature, we extend this previous work to
more general dilemmas, in which agents operate in a continuous strategy space.
The social dilemma under study here is the well-known Ultimatum Game, in which
an optimal solution is achieved if agents agree on a common strategy. We
investigate whether a scale-free interaction network facilitates agents to
reach agreement, especially in the presence of fixed-strategy agents that
represent a desired (e.g. human) outcome. Moreover, we study the influence of
rewiring in the interaction network. The agents are equipped with
continuous-action learning automata and play a large number of random pairwise
games in order to establish a common strategy. From our experiments, we may
conclude that results obtained in discrete-strategy games can be generalized to
continuous-strategy games to a certain extent: a scale-free interaction network
structure allows agents to achieve agreement on a common strategy, and rewiring
in the interaction network greatly enhances the agents ability to reach
agreement. However, it also becomes clear that some alternative mechanisms,
such as reputation and volunteering, have many subtleties involved and do not
have convincing beneficial effects in the continuous case
Talking Nets: A Multi-Agent Connectionist Approach to Communication and Trust between Individuals
A multi-agent connectionist model is proposed that consists of a collection of individual recurrent networks that communicate with each other, and as such is a network of networks. The individual recurrent networks simulate the process of information uptake, integration and memorization within individual agents, while the communication of beliefs and opinions between agents is propagated along connections between the individual networks. A crucial aspect in belief updating based on information from other agents is the trust in the information provided. In the model, trust is determined by the consistency with the receiving agents’ existing beliefs, and results in changes of the connections between individual networks, called trust weights. Thus activation spreading and weight change between individual networks is analogous to standard connectionist processes, although trust weights take a specific function. Specifically, they lead to a selective propagation and thus filtering out of less reliable information, and they implement Grice’s (1975) maxims of quality and quantity in communication. The unique contribution of communicative mechanisms beyond intra-personal processing of individual networks was explored in simulations of key phenomena involving persuasive communication and polarization, lexical acquisition, spreading of stereotypes and rumors, and a lack of sharing unique information in group decisions
Mean-Field Theory of Meta-Learning
We discuss here the mean-field theory for a cellular automata model of
meta-learning. The meta-learning is the process of combining outcomes of
individual learning procedures in order to determine the final decision with
higher accuracy than any single learning method. Our method is constructed from
an ensemble of interacting, learning agents, that acquire and process incoming
information using various types, or different versions of machine learning
algorithms. The abstract learning space, where all agents are located, is
constructed here using a fully connected model that couples all agents with
random strength values. The cellular automata network simulates the higher
level integration of information acquired from the independent learning trials.
The final classification of incoming input data is therefore defined as the
stationary state of the meta-learning system using simple majority rule, yet
the minority clusters that share opposite classification outcome can be
observed in the system. Therefore, the probability of selecting proper class
for a given input data, can be estimated even without the prior knowledge of
its affiliation. The fuzzy logic can be easily introduced into the system, even
if learning agents are build from simple binary classification machine learning
algorithms by calculating the percentage of agreeing agents.Comment: 23 page
