    French osteotomy for cubitus varus in children: a long term study over 27 years

    Background: Cubitus varus is a cosmetically unacceptable complication of supracondylar fractures of the elbow in children. We have performed the lateral closing wedge (French) osteotomy to correct the varus for 27 years. More complex osteotomies have been described to correct the associated hyperextension and internal rotation deformities and to prevent a prominent lateral condyle. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 90 consecutive patients (1986-2012). The mean age of the patients at surgery was 8.2 years (3 to14 years). The varus angle (mean 21.4°, range 8°- 40°) was assessed pre-operatively with the humero-elbow-wrist (HEW) angle. The postoperative carrying angle (mean 10.4) and the pre- and postoperative range of movement were assessed clinically. The lateral condylar prominence index (LCPI) was retrospectively measured at union. Results: Seventy five (93.3%) of the patients had a good or excellent result. Six (6.7%) had a poor result (residual varus, loss of >20°of pre-operative range of flexion or extension or a complication necessitating repeat surgery). There were no neuro-vascular complications. The mean LCPI was +0.14. Conclusions: The results of the French osteotomy are comparable to the more technically demanding dome, step-cut translation and multi-planar osteotomies, with a lower complication rate. The literature reports adequate remodelling of the hyperextension deformity ( ≤ 10 years) patient. Level of evidence: Level IV: Case serie

    Multiresolution analysis as an approach for tool path planning in NC machining

    Wavelets permit multiresolution analysis of curves and surfaces. A complex curve can be decomposed using wavelet theory into lower resolution curves. The low-resolution (coarse) curves are similar to rough-cuts and high-resolution (fine) curves to finish-cuts in numerical controlled (NC) machining.;In this project, we investigate the applicability of multiresolution analysis using B-spline wavelets to NC machining of contoured 2D objects. High-resolution curves are used close to the object boundary similar to conventional offsetting, while lower resolution curves, straight lines and circular arcs are used farther away from the object boundary.;Experimental results indicate that wavelet-based multiresolution tool path planning improves machining efficiency. Tool path length is reduced, sharp corners are smoothed out thereby reducing uncut areas and larger tools can be selected for rough-cuts

    Safety evaluation of amusement rides using accumulated accident data: Accident data framework

    Amusement rides and devices are a popular form of recreation and important component of the tourism industry. Injury-producing accidents are rare, and the viability of the industry relies on perceived safety of the activity. Some existing metrics use accumulated accident reports. Several metrics tabulate the number of injuries, but none collect enough information about the context of accidents to analyse the accumulated data to deduce patterns. This paper describes an Accident Data Framework for a minimal set of variables from reports of amusement device accident, and the structure for a useful narrative to aid reporters and recorders to avoid introducing bias. A pilot test with 125 industry practitioners supported the general feasibility of this approach. A review of requirements confirms the framework supports compliance with ASTM F770, a major international standard. Refinements made in response to a pilot test of the Accident Framework were incorporated into the classification rules, provided in an Annex to the paper

    If you ask law students what they think about examination accommodations provided to students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, most students will tell you that it is unfair that some students get more time to take an examination. The misconception that accommodations provide an unfair advantage may stem from the fact that not all students understand the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ), its purpose, and the reasons why individuals receive such accommodations. In fact, the ADA has applications beyond the employment context. Specifically, the ADA ensures that students with disabilities who graduate from medical school, law school, and other professional programs cannot be discriminated against in their educational programs and are entitled to nondiscrimination and reasonable accommodation in the licensing process

    Using Ozobots to Learn Character Traits

    Technology is utilized in everyday life. As such, teachers can employ educational robots and technology to assist in growing skills in collaboration, communication, computational thinking, and problem-solving. Educational robots also appear to increase engagement and motivation in students to participate in lessons. This study employed design-based research (DBR) to explore the use of Ozobots in teaching character traits in a fourth-grade classroom. Together with fourth-grade teachers, a set of lessons was created that employed Ozobots to engage students in learning character traits. Two technology integration frameworks, technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) and Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR), were incorporated to ensure that the technology integration lessons were developed with structure and intent. Through the DBR study, findings showed that educators could utilize Ozobots to support teaching character traits through instructional lessons. The lessons can be modified for additional grade levels depending on student needs. Implications for future studies include more research on how Ozobots and other educational robots may be suitable to help with reading and writing skills

    Computational fluid dynamic modeling of acoustic liquid manipulation

    Acoustic liquid manipulation, or ALM, is a term used to qualify three effects of nonlinear sound transmitted through fluid: radiation pressure, streaming, and heating. ALM is harnessed for a number of uses, such as the creation of fountains, formation of jets, and the destruction of cancerous tumors. As with any physical phenomenon, a computational model is desired to allow prediction of ALM.;Since prior work associated with this study produced a model for nonlinear sound, this thesis focused on developing computational fluid dynamic code to predict fluid velocity and heating. The model was compared with experimental data for water at room temperature and found to produce similar flow paths, although the code produced velocities orders of magnitude below the empirical setup. A number of cases were also examined to determine effects of fluid property variation. The conclusions discuss the merits of the model, as well as improvements for future work

    An ever expanding body of rehabilitation engineering technology is developing in this country, but it rarely reaches the people for whom it is intended. The increasing concern of state and federal departments of rehabilitation for this technology lag was the stimulus for a series of problem-solving workshops held in California during 1977. As a result of the workshops, the recommendation emerged that the California Department of Rehabilitation take the lead in the development of a coordinated delivery system that would eventually serve the entire state and be a model for similar systems across the nation
